Favorite beaches

Besides Hawaii, what tropical beach should I look at going to first? Preference is natural photographic beauty, pristineness. Secondly... a bit of culture and a nice place to relax. Don't care that much about hotels.

Debating between caribbean and south pacific.
Eleuthera is as low key and real as it gets. Search it here as @blackbones and I have discussed it a few times.

@Hoosierhawkeye Thinking about doing a trip somewhere along the east side of Lake Michigan this summer. St. Joseph, Holland, South Haven all look great. Any input on a trip there?
HoosierHawk may have answered already. But my 2 cents, being in the area is you literally cannot go wrong with any of the beach towns. They are all similar, yet unique. New Buffalo to St. Joe (our favorite) to South Haven to Saugatuck to Holland (those would be SW MI) to Grand Haven to Luddington to Arcadia Bluffs to Sleeping Bear Dunes to Traverse City to Charlevoix to Mackinaw. Also, if you do this, hit up inland wineries and brew pubs which are fantastic in SW MI, near and around Sawyer and Baroda.

Treasure Island, FL. I live in T.I. so I’m biased but I can’t think of any other beach I’d rather sit and just chill to the calm sounds of ocean waves. Plus no open container laws in T.I.😎
Damn, didn't know that. Remember you being in on some Florida vacation threads I posted in before but didn't know you actually lived in TI. We've got a timeshare week at the Beach Club, I'm leaving Tuesday to go to my mom's across the bay for a few days before picking up the lady friend and the kids next Friday to migrate back to the island for a week. How'd you fare during the hurricanes? And is the local sentiment as angry as the city government as I see on the Facebook groups I'm on? I guess I'll find out next week. First time I'm actually glad our place is on the second floor...

But ya, I second that. Treasure Island is awesome.

Clearwater Beach at the Hilton is my favorite beach I have been to in terms of the sand and overall experience:

Most fun beach I have been to was in Playa as I am a big kid at heart and the waves were perfect to body surf:

The most unique beaches I have been to are the black beaches on the Big Island:

Which resort was that in Playa?

It has become our favorite place to go in FL only having visted there once. Stayed at the Hilton right there by the pier. Around dinner time they had a guy playing guitar and singing until the sun set. We requested the gambler and it was pretty cool. Where we stayed you can just walk to what you want. There is some trolley did not take advantage of but we will next time. Have fun!
Do you have kids with you when you go?

Yep...the Pacific is friggin cold too.
This is the number one factor imo. Unless you’re surfing, you’re not getting in the water. Also, FL has so many white powder sand beaches to choose from there is just no comparison imo. It really comes to personal preference, but most people go to the beach to relax, get some sun, and jump in the water to cool off from time to time. Cali beaches aren’t that.

Take a look at St Pete Beach next time. It’s less touristy and has a ton of great hotels, beach bars, and restaurants. Clearwater beach is not somewhere locals go to hang if that means anything to ya. Just a suggestion.
My vibe in Florida is a little bit nautica, a little bit buffet, casual refined beach. So like drinks watching the sun go down with life music. But not too crazy of loud music. Like cover band buffet/kenny Rogers. That was what we got where we stayed. Will look into st Pete beach too as I’ve heard good things.

Beachcomber is where we usually go in StPB. Live music daily (or used to be), some good food options right in that area, and a great beach. Also, when staying there we have been known to a tiki hut bar crawl since there are like 5 of them right in a row.

Also, Free Beach Ride. 727-776-7553. Free will donation taxi that goes from CWB done to StPB.

This thread in particular had a good discussion. If I was doing it all over again, I definitely would freeze and pack my own steaks/burgers/whatever with dry ice.

It also looks like our fishing/boat tour guy Bubba survived the Covid travel restrictions and is still living his best life:

Yep, I was wondering. We're staying at the Grand at the end of Feb/beginning of March. Stayed at the Lindo a long time ago, got upgraded to the Lindo from the Del Mar. Actually 5 properties on the resort. Looking forward to that trip. Also, the golf course is excellent!

Looks like they made some upgrades since we went last about 10 to 15 years ago. If we went again we would do the expensive one, as our youngest would be 18 by then and I believe it is adults only. More about the high end experience now and not wave pools and waterslides.

Actually, we really enjoyed the Lindo. Only 250-300 rooms so smallish which is our preference. When we were there, I don't think the Grand existed, and the Maya had just been built or was relatively new. We wandered over to the Del Mar a couple of times but didn't stay long as that is the biggest resort on the property.

We've been to Iberostar properties on Coz, Jamaica, and Riviera. I'm hoping they have given property managers more local control instead of the Corporate control. I guess we'll see.

Oh we enjoyed it - we went twice! The food at Paraiso Lindo was pretty mid though, and at that time at least, they absolutely passed off rotgut as "premium" liquors. That's fine for rum and cokes, but for the love of god don't pour me shit gin or whiskey on the rocks and tell me I'm not drinking shit. But on the whole it was fun and we love the beach. It wasn't too rough with huge waves, but it had waves that were big enough to have fun in.

When not suffering from June grass or sargassum, the gulf coast between Pensacola and Panama City beach are pretty sweet, and easy for me to get to. Never been east of PCB, but the pictures look nice. Biggest complaint about PCB is they’ve done a poor job managing development, so you see a wall of 30 story condos when you look down the beach. Alabama beaches are slightly less developed but closer to the Mississippi River, so the water can be more turbid at times.

Been to Maui once. Wasn’t terribly impressed with their beaches, but I enjoyed the overall “exoticness” of the place.

You gotta find the right beach in Hawaii. For example, Waikiki sucks. Tons of rocks in the water.

The beach on Ocracoke Island on the Outer Banks. You have 13 miles of wide sandy beach. It is part of the Cape Hatteras national seashore and is run by the National Park Service. Also, people in the know can go to a part that the park service looks the other way for topless or nude bathing.

I only visited Maui. My take, the weather is too nice to enjoy the beach. I’m used to sitting on panhandle beaches in 90+ heat, and you jump in the gulf to cool off (and pee). When I was in Maui, temp was 70-75, and the water is noticeably cooler due to ocean currents. It was great to sit out and enjoy the scenery, but too cold to jump in the ocean. I can see why surfers wear those body suits.

This is our last night in Bonaire. If you are looking for big white sandy beaches, this ain't it but the snorkeling is amazing and uncrowded. I did manage to see a few big Dutch white jiggly butts out of the corner of my eye.

Bonaire has been on radar for awhile for the shore diving. Are you in/near a 'town' or more of a private/quiet area?

What a great thread. I’m trying to think if there has ever been a beach I’ve been on that I didn’t like. Kind of hard for me to pick a favorite.i agree that Italy, with all its amazingness really lacks in the beach department.

If I had to pick one I think the isla mujeres is a great one. Only problem is that it was super busy. Really anywhere in Cancun is spectacular.

As far as comparing Florida to California. I love them both. Florida for swimming and the awesome sand and water pretty much throughout the panhandle. California for the scenery and just chilling while listening to the waves. One of my favorite memories was with my new bride drinking a six pack on half moon bay in California. There was hardly anyone there and just miles and miles of beach.

I think I need to get to the beach thus summer.

I'll toss in North Ave Beach in Chicago. There's something about going from a dark, shot and a beer dive, to hopping on a bike and being at the beach in 15 minutes on a hot summer day. Skyline in the background. Volleyball, breaks in the lake, cold beverages and - crucially - after a shower, back to whatever city life you want to continue. Just a great way to spend part of a day.

Any of you ever been down to Rio? Ipanema or Copacabana beaches? Always fancied the idea of exploring the urban jungle around that area as well.
I’ve been to Rio. I thought the beach was quite dirty to be honest. The ladies were fine looking however…no idea how dirty those ladies were as the no pic gets my full attention.

I haven’t been to a whole lot of beaches (I’m more of a mountain person), but of the few I’ve been to:

Cane Garden Bay in the BVI
Black Sand Beach in Hawaii
The Baths in the BVI
Silver Strand in San Diego
Captiva in Florida
