It's so ludicrous that Ellingson sits there with a Scholarship, when it looked like today,
against Villanova, may be Nick Baer our best player.

He's the most efficient, most active, smartest and almost the team's leading scorer today in the
NCAA tournament.

Fran's recruiting MISSes (like not offering Jeremy Morgan) & instead giving a scholarship to a
5th team All county guy in N Wisconsin came back to bite, Big time.

I'd already had a thread calling for this, about half-way thru the season. But now, finally
EVERYONE agrees with me. Find a way to give Nick Baer the Schollie he deserves.

I agree. Give him the schollie.

He will get the next one available. Between Jones, Ellingson, Fleming, and Hutton. Someone won't be back, just playing the percentages.

Right.........doesn't really matter though, hope most comesback, actually.
Nick Baer should have a SCHOLLIE Right now

I am sure they will find one, but I wonder whose it will be? I think personally think Ellingson will be the one to leave, but you never know.

He came in as a walk on and it is better for the program if he doesn't take up a scholarship. Word is that he knew he may never get one and was fine with that. Of course he deserves one but he may not get it for a year or two.

If Jok goes pro, there's a scholly right there.
I am not sure what Joke's deal is. I think he let all the publicity go to his head. Late in the game yesterday, Baer was wide open on the wing, instead of passing, Jok dribbled to the top of the key and chucked up a contested three. His defense really dropped off, although it never has been great.

This Hawks started playing like a two man team instead of sharing the ball and moving it around.

No doubt that Uthoff and Jok are talented but their shooting percentage really dropped off,

This thread makes me curious about two things:

1) Do people not realize that even if we passed the hat, it's not like we can just get the university to pay for Baer's schooling RIGHT NOW?
2) How did OP decide to use ten '.'s in their subject?

I mean wasn't he a "preferred walk-on" Doesn't that mean if a scholly opens up, he is first in line to get it? I wonder if we have anyone leave, will Fran use it on Baer?

Personally the kid deserves it, I thought his hustle was great this year. I still think he is limited and needs to BULK up for next year. Also needs to work on foot speed as well. But I am sure they will improve him and work with him.

I just want Fran to find some "quick/athletic" guards. I think we have the post players in the program to be good, now we need the guard play to go with it. I look at what is returning and there are lot unknowns with (Moss, Hutton, Jones). I mean those 3 could be just what we need. Williams has shown glimpses of good play. He can come in and knock down some shots.

I just hate to say it, I think Fran was some what Hamstrung by our current senior group. Not saying they controlled the program, but I am sure Fran made a promise to those guys that they would start and what not. Plus they were probably the best that we HAD. Now moving forward I look at his roster and see competition at all spots. I think this will drive the players to improve and get better and battle for starting positions. Coming into this season we knew the starting 5 and it never changed.

I agree with your comment about Fran. I think it was obvious that in order to get MG and especially Woody to come to Iowa, he promised them they would be starters for four years. Maybe not as evident with this year's team but if you look at the previous 2 years, Woody was not the best Center on the team but still started every game. Basabe played behind him in the 2013 - 2014 season (although labelled a Forward) and Olaseni played behind him in the 2014 - 2015 season. Both of those guys were better than Woody and both of them are playing Pro Ball overseas.

As far as your comment having the post players we need; I don't agree. The players we have (and have coming in) are all Power Forwards. No one in these classes is tall enough to play against the other Centers in the Big Ten. Fran needs a true athletic Center who can stuff the ball and shoot over other Centers in the Big Ten. I do agree with your comment about needing to have quick / athletic guards but with only one Scholarship left for 2017, he needs to find a Center. If a couple of kids transfer, he can give a scholarship to Nicholas Baer and try to sign a quick guard. Otherwise, he will have to count on Williams and Bohannon for a couple of years.

Just my opinion.

I think Cook at 6-8 can play the center position. I mean if you look around other teams use guys from 6-8 to 6-10 to be their centers. Personally I would take a guy who is 6-8 and can jump out of the gym, than a 7 footer who can't jump or alter shots. I don't know that's just me. I agree we will be smaller, but I think we will be more athletic across the board, which will help us on the defensive end.

Kriener will do nicely in the post, eventually.
I think next year will actually be post by committee with minutes shared between Uhl, Wagner, Cook, and Kriener; might as well throw Jones and Pemsl in the mix. I realize none are centers in the truest sense of the definition, but all bring a skill set that can help. I think you'll really see a jump in productivity from Uhl.

Baer will get a scholarship at some point. It just might not be until his Junior year. But going from nothing to something is a dream come true. Even if for just one year.

Baer is all Hawkeye. Which is awesome. That said, if a scholarship opened up, and Fran found the perfect 5th year (or any year) PG, would he want Fran to give that player the scholarship??

For the betterment of the team, I think Baer would want the scholly to go to the PG. Interesting thought

Baer would be a great fit for the UNI program all them kids play hard.
I hate saying it but it is the truth.

Better suggestion, how about the Recruit whose Dad is a millionaire, forego the
Schollie, but still play for the Hawkeyes ?? hmmmmmmmmm

Dad is a millionaire and kid is probably entitled to discounted tuition since dad is a University employee? Where are you going to find someone like that?

The University of Iowa doesn't offer any discounted tuition to children of faculty or staff.

I said that before and got my head chewed off. But I agree. I have never understood a coaches kid getting a scholarship. One, they make too much money! Give it to a more needy person. And two, you can add another scholarship player to the team... Unless Connor is too good to keep off the floor. It would be better if he redshirts, IMHO. There is still a lot of time for him to develop, and he will. That said, there will be some experienced PGs in front of him when he gets here. Williams will be a Junior and Bohannan a Sophomore. I like Williams' potential. He is a good athlete, that much is obvious. He has good quickness. He plays good defense from the little we have witnessed. That will improve.

Get a great PG first!

I would rather have a 6'7 to 6'9 center that is athletic that can play 7' rather than a 7'1" center that plays like a non athletic 6'6" center. Woody may have been a 7 footer but sheesh I swear he played like he was only 6'5

My letters to Coach McCaffery really helped here.

Joshing ya------------No, I didn't really write FrannyMac.

Sure glad they got St Nicholas what he deserves though.
