But don't worry, it's not racist. They're just celebrating their heritage. Specifically that period of time in which they seceded from the Union because they were concerned the federal government was going to take away their right to own slaves.

You are wrong and should feel stupid. The confederate flag came back back as part of the centennial ceremonies of the civil war. It wasn't until the 90's that anyone made the claim that it was brought out as a front against civil rights. The very idea of the confederate flag being a racist symbol is an ignorant modern one. Even in the eighties and early 90's , it was extremely common to see black Southern people proudly display the flag.

Actually, the flag has been associated with racist organizations like the Klan since the early 20th century (and continues today), and was the symbol of the "Dixiecrats" formed in 1948 which splintered from the Democrats in response to growing concerns about civil rights.

Can you please explain to me why you're willing to put your neck out for the Confederate flag? It is undeniably seen a huge symbol of racism. Worse, by supporting the flag, you open yourself up to accusations that you're racist. So why take this chance? Is it really worth being accused of being a bigot for the largely lost cause of restoring the Confederate flag to respectability? I'm not sure I understand the draw of celebrating roots grounded during slavery times?

As part of the centennial ceremonies of the civil war. . . Oh you mean right about the same time as some uppity blacks started demanding to be treated like humans.

Kiting will argue until he's blue in the face about Jameis Winston and the Confederate Flag. No matter the amount of information presented to him will change his mind on either subject. Save your keystrokes

What if people just think the confederate flag looks cool? You know, like the Oregon uniforms of the flag world?

Actually, a thread on coolest looking flags would be kinda neat.

No, he isn't. No, he shouldn't.

No, it didn't.

And that's just stupid.

Meh, don't live in Georgia and don't care.

Ever heard of Vinton, Iowa? The kids flying the treason flag in the school parking lot claimed it wasn't about racism, it was about heritage and free speech.

Complete bs, enabled by Kiting and his generation of racists teaching young Klan wannabees how to glorify racism. Attaboy Kiting, keep hate alive!

Swag should drive 45 minutes to the school parking lot and have a discussion with the young Rebs celebrating their heritage, might find out he does care.

Great job Kiting, your delusional bs is enabling people as far away as Vinton, Iowa! Proudly displayed the treason flag, got sent home, and went on tv to proclaim it's not about racism, its about heritage and free speech. Way to go Kiting, keep hate alive!

And be clear with yourself what you are enabling with your proud display and vehement defense of the treason flag:

"The Benton County Sheriff's Office has received several reports of mailbox vandalism today. Although the authorities have not identified a suspect, one witness has.

"We had high school boys come by in a truck draped in confederate flags screaming 'N****r" phrases at our house and then taking a bat to our mailbox before speeding away," said David Cornell, the father of several African American children.

"It's pretty disappointing for our community," said Cornell, the VSHS varsity girls soccer coach. "I just thought everyone should know and I thought I would pass that word along to anyone who thought the flag issue was not about hate."

As a matter of fact I have heard of Vinton, I had a roommate in college from Vinton. Wore cowboy boots and sang "Good Morning Beautiful" to his gf almost every morning.

His family is good ppl, his mom and dad even showed up to my grandpa's funeral the day after they just buried Tyler Sash (his dad was Tyler's high school football coach).

The guy isn't racist. We're brothers even to this day, he had my back when another black guy from Florida threatened me with knives.

So what's the deal Swag, as long as your brother/roommate is available to save you when your mouth writes checks and his family can make your grandpa's funeral you don't care about racist behavior in Vinton?
Point being, of course, that your cavalier dismissal of the relevance of racist symbols in Georgia because you are all the way up here in Iowa is naïve and misplaced, if not downright dangerous.

My personal opinion about the flag is yes, most people who own them that I know are hickish and at least a little racist. I have no desire to ever own one myself.

What I love about America though is that if people want to be hickish and or racist that is their right.

Quite the opposite, I was very much in control of the situation (even when his cousin jumped in, this why the guy went to grab knives) I'm not exactly 5'5 135lbs.

I also don't believe you or I can change behavior. I just said I don't like the rural south. In cool with the cities. Im not in favor of the stars and bars being banned. On state and federal buildings sure, but not on clothing. Sometimes life I s a better teacher than your laws you try to pass.

Ps. Don't act like a victim, you don't play that card well at all.

Yet the Department of Defense says it isn’t even “reviewing” the possibility of a ban on the flag, deciding instead to leave any such move to the various service branches, while military bases named after Confederate officers will remain so. One factor in this decision: the South provides more than 40% of all military recruits, many of them white; only 15% are from the Northeast.

Filling the ranks isn't, however, the only reason for the military’s refusal to act.

Over the last few weeks, there has been near unanimous agreement among liberal and mainstream commentators that the Confederate flag represents “hate, not heritage.” The flag’s current presence in American culture is ubiquitous. It adorns license plates, bumper stickers, mugs, bodies (via tattoos) and even baby diapers. The flag’s popularity is normally traced back to the post-World War II reaction of the Dixiecrat South to the Civil Rights Movement. South Carolina, for instance, raised the Stars and Bars over its state house in 1961 as part, columnist Eugene Robinson said on Meet the Press,” of its “massive resistance to racial desegregation.”

What if people just think the confederate flag looks cool?
That was always my instinct and feeling as far back as I can remember.

I have a friend who was born and raised in New Jersey (he's about 60 now), who said "Man, I remember seeing that flag for the first time in history class in school and thinking 'I wish the US Flag looked as cool as the South's flag!' "

It's a shame that racist, prejudice, and hate groups use it to represent them. It is a cool-looking flag.

The Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party in the 60's, which was formed by blacks and whites to challenge the white-only Mississippi Democratic Party used it.

Here was their button:

It like the idea of confederate flag plates. Please announce to the world that you're a racist bigot. Let the KKK have a plate, Nazi plates, Westboro Baptist Church plates. Instead of them having a level of anonymity in public, let their beliefs be known. If I see you needing help on the side of the road, I'll just give a slight smile and give a wink back to my god.

Your God? Your God tells you not to help those in need?

So has the American flag. The American flag is also a representation of multiple foreign invasions. Ready to take that one down also?

Yes! Right there in his 10 commandments. "Help all those in need... unless they are f'n a'holes". I ask god "how will I know if they are f'n a'holes". He responds with an approving nod and wink "Do they have a personalized license plate acknowledging the fact".
How does God have all the time to tell you that, with your little prick in his mouth though?

Funny, really, that all of the horrible things attributed to this piece of cloth here by mostly lefties, was uttered by none other than ole'honest Abe.

Indeed, if someone said what Lincoln did then, they would be burned ate the proverbial stake.

He went to war against the south WHILE ESSENTIALLY HOLDING THE SAME VIEW POINTS as them.

History has never been kind to progressives...

Make sure you don't remind them of the time he said this.

"I will say then that I am not, nor ever have been in favor of bringing about in anyway the social and political equality of the white and black races - that I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race. I say upon this occasion I do not perceive that because the white man is to have the superior position the negro should be denied everything."
