Gilman back to PSU?

This thread is exhausting. I tried to quickly browse through it.. No matter what, Gilman will be fine at NLWC, and probably doesn't take much of a pay cut if any at all. I have no doubt he is a very knowledgable and great coach, but sometimes personalities aren't a good fit.. and we know Thomas is going to be Thomas and he has his quirks/personality and that room was not going to work out. Obviously things were not working out with Gilman at Oklahoma State from the working relationships in the room, and it sounds like his general move and acclimation to Stillwater was not good either. I don't think he went back to NLWC based on a desire to compete. I think he wanted out of Stillwater (or, DT wanted him out), and NLWC/PSU was available, so he left. Clearly it is a good move by Cael to bring him back with Ono there, and LL etc. Cael seems to think he will work out just fine back in State College.

A lot of talk about Ono. Bringing Gilman back probably means Cael's comment to Ono last summer, "come here and one of your partners will be Thomas Gilman" is a reality again. My guess is Ono wanted to train where he would have great partners, great coaching, and he would not be training with the people he would be competing against just to make the Japanese teams.. Plus, he probably makes a lot more $ at NLWC than he would earn in Japan.

Someone mentioned Ono is top 3 p4p in the world.. NO, wrong.. Ono is extremely good, but top 3 p4p is a stretch. If Ono was top 3-4 p4p he would have been on the 2024 Olympic team at 57kg, instead of Higuchi... don't get carried away.. I concede that 57kg in Japan just won the Olympics.. but not being able to make an olympic team at an Olympic weight once every 4 years.. come on.. Ono isn't exactly emaciated or sucked at 61 kg either.. Also, a lot of talk about 61 kg guys and 57 kg guys... many of the guys that competed in the Olympics at 57kg are up at 61 kg currently, such as Ugeuv and Harutyunyan etc. So 61kg just got tougher, while 57kg got easier as some guys vacated the weight class.

A lot of posts and a lot of getting in the weeds for:
- Gilman left Okie State to go to NLWC..
- Gilman was not fitting in well with the coaching staff (and possibly athletes). Gilman also did not
acclimate well to his new home in the Stillwater area.
- Cael believes Gilman will be good for what he has in the room at PSU/NLWC in the lightweight divisions.
- Ono is probably happy Gilman is returning. Who knows if Ono will ever wear a PSU singlet?
- Gilman is probably getting good compensation

The move was one big WIN WIN WIN all the way around. Funny how that happens "spur of the moment".

@ Mendoza: Watching the UFC tonight, and it struck me that Diego Lopes is from Brazil, a Portuguese speaking country, and his chest tattoo reads "DREAM BELIEVE AND MAKE IT HAPPEN" in ENGLISH. Too bad "most" of his country won't understand what it means.

That's weird.

And although there will be a translator for post-fight interviews, you'll notice that most fighters are proficient in English but use the translator because they are uncomfortable speaking the language in front of millions of viewers.

Thomas Gilman is as real as it gets, he still respects Iowa if you listen to his interview with Busch. Some of you pudwackers need to look in the mirror
Real as it gets? Then he should admit his insecurity with Spencer, his disloyalty to any school he's been with, and finally that he is to blame for the situation at OSU (instead of "no one person is at fault"). He should look in the mirror, not us. We get to see him face to face.

I'll go one step further. No only is he not "real," he's actually a fake Tom/Terry wannabe.
Or, in other words, if this is his real, I'd hate to see his fake.

Tom/Terry wannabe? You're a tool. Guys like you have turned this messageboard into a joke. There's a reason why current/former hawkeyes like Spencer Lee himself& recently Ayala, speak out about psycho Hawkeye fans like yourself.

OK, you keep trying to convince us that Gilman is real, and do so by calling people pudwackers. Great, you listened to one Gilman interview, listen to all the others. I think Lee and Ayala might have been referring to you. Ayala and Lee, the complete opposite of Gilman. Those guys are real actually.

And, I'll double down on the T&T wannabe. He's actually admitted as much, and said he looked up to them and modeled himself after them.

Tool, pudwackers? You fit right in.

Last year’s NCAA runner-up wants to be clear: Following in the footsteps of Tom and Terry is a choice.

“I listen to what Tom and Terry say, then I do what they do,” Gilman said. “That might sound weird and like I’m brainwashed. Like I’m trying to be a robot. But that’s my choice. That’s not their doing.

“They’re not making minions. I look up to them so highly that I want to be just like them. It’s not by accident. And in order to be where I want be, I have to live my life more like them.”

-- I've never heard Ayala or Lee be called a robot!!!!!! They respect T&T but are not clones.
And the message board has been ruined since 2007 at least, and definitely since the "new PSUers" came along. Ayala and Lee were still in diapers.

...do you have to be academically eligible anymore to wrestle, anywhere?......
It’s very rare that anyone is academically ineligible in any sport. Hard to believe with the increase in transfers in recent years that there wouldn’t be a few more hiccups here and there.

Studies suggest that a significant portion of college athletes struggle with reading at a basic level. One study found that 7% to 18% of revenue sport athletes at some universities read at an elementary school level. Additionally, a CNN analysis of 21 public universities found that 8% to 10% of athletes read below a third-grade level.

Yet, how many of those athletes are ever officially deemed ineligible? One thing revenue sports do is find ways to keep their impact athletes eligible. Even those that aren't, between tutors, online courses, study groups and straight up course load management, it is damn near impossible for these kids to get there if they have anyone on the staff paying close attention...

I work on a campus that participates in D1 sports and these numbers frankly surprise me.

It is not in the university's best interest to find deficiencies in athletic standards. I suspect that most of these deficient athletes are in the high revenue sports. BB and FB.

@Lowsingle07 - this was posted for you! Yes, a T&T wannabe. Maybe your tool comment should be directed at Gilman, not me. I'm just the messenger. This week Willie called me a douche, and you called me a tool. I feel so recognized and special but those big words can't prove a point like facts and quotes can! :)

I would like to read what Spencer and Ayala said about the psycho fans, care to share a link?

Also very solid approach to not address anything that was in the original post that you responded to. It makes you look for credible.

That has always been the case though. I suspect more online learning has made passing classes more manageable to some extent.

STEM classes/degrees will always be challenging but grade inflation, even for non athletes, is rampant. One now has to put real effort into failing. Even at the elite Ivy schools, they say the hardest thing about them is getting in.

Some of the degrees that guys are getting make it almost impossible to be ineligible, unless you are a total MORAN!!
