Have we discussed Coach Prime going to Colorado?

I do root for you guys… was just making a point to Torbee 😘
Iowa played for a Big 10 championship a couple years ago and a couple years before that as well. Is about to finish 5th in a 16-team Big 10. I don’t share your pessimism on their future.

Hah. You get my point.

But if you disagree, let’s take Iowa. Why even be a fan of Iowa if it’s National Championship or bust? Iowa will never win one again, and probably won’t ever win the Big 10 again. Nobody cares about an 8-4 Iowa team nationally. So what’s the point, then?
Who said it’s National Championship or bust? There are only about 15 or 20 teams that have a realistic shot at winning a NC. Should everyone else just quit watching?

I love rooting for Iowa football for a number of reasons. The main reason is that I love the identity of the program. I love that it embodies hard work and grit and perseverance. I love rooting for unheralded recruits who work their ass off to build themselves into elite pro prospects. Guys like Bob Sanders and Dallas Clark and Jack Campbell and Desmond King and a list that goes on and on.

8-4 isn’t going to draw a lot of attention nationally. But my enjoyment of watching Iowa football isn’t reliant upon fans of other schools taking notice and being wowed.

Iowa is never going to consistently compete with blue bloods like Michigan and Ohio State. But they usually beat the teams they’re expected to beat and they are consistently competitive against their peer programs.

And about once every couple of years or so they punch one of those blue bloods in the mouth. And when they do, it’s sweet nectar.

Florida State would give its collective left nut to finish 8-4 next season.

I agree with you and that was exactly my point!

There are many reasons to watch college football and root for a team. Torbee was the one saying Deion will never win anything of substance. Which completely ignores the fact that he’s already “won” in many different ways - on the field and off - as has CU and its fans.

Whether Deion ever wins a championship is irrelevant IMO.

Difference is he ACTS like a “championship or bust” coach. Lots of peacocking and boasting, marginal results.

He’s basically the opposite of “it’s not bragging if you back it up”

More like “it’s cool to brag, even if you don’t back it up.”

Good grief, they all do that. If you were an AD or a fan, would you want your new coach saying “Hey, I just hope we can get to .500!”

Cmon man! He still has a chance to win his conference in year 2, at what was one of the worst power conference programs in the country. I completely understand hating the cocky/confident attitude, but his results so far (on many levels) are pretty damn impressive.

This is what coaches do today, except for the dean of college football and my hero KF (see Indiana coach doing the exact same thing with his “google me” comments).

Fair enough. I just have serious doubts about Deion’s intentions. He was one of the all-time great players, but it’s not like coaching is in his blood. He didn’t start coaching at all, anywhere, until his sons reached high school. And since then his coaching career has consisted entirely of going wherever Shedeur goes. They’ve been a package deal since Trinity Prep in Texas.

Deion had never coached at any level in FBS before CU. Not as a position coach. Not as a coordinator. Nothing. He just showed up in Boulder with Hunter and his sons.

Unless CU reaches the Big 12 title game, Shedeur’s and Hunter’s college careers end next weekend. They’re not sticking around to play South Carolina in the Las Vegas Bowl.

Then what?

They’ve created a lot of buzz and sold a lot of merch. But are fans going to look back in 10 or 20 years and reminisce about those two glorious years when they went 13-11?

The issue I'm having is how NIL is ruining this. A player struggles, rather than working to overcome it they just find a new team. Even if it's the middle of the season. If a player does really well and isn't going pro, they very well could be on a new team next season. You never get the payoff of getting invested in a player and watching him grow.

I admit I’m anxious this is a high water mark for the program if he leaves this off-season.

Yep. I want to fast forward to a world where the universities fully professionalize the players. Create a salary cap, eliminate any donations that go straight to players or make that contribute to the salary cap (not marketing/advertising money, just the outright gifts). Unionize the players for purposes of collective bargaining and let’s move on from this era where $10M is paid to flip a QB that has never played a down in college.

NIL and the portal have definitely changed the game. But to a certain extent Iowa has always had to deal with guys leaving because they didn’t want to wait their turn. Iowa high schools only produce about 5-10 Big Ten caliber players per year. Which means Iowa has always had to go elsewhere to bring in talent.

It’s one thing for a guy who grew up as a Hawkeye fan in Iowa to wait his turn. But a kid from another state hundreds of miles away is much more likely to get homesick and/or want a fresh start where he can maybe get on the field sooner. Iowa has routinely lost 5 or 6 guys per year for this reason.

Ohio is about 500 miles away from Iowa and produces about 10 times the number of Big Ten caliber high school recruits that Iowa does. And Ohio State pretty much gets their pick of the litter.

It’s worth noting that Iowa’s All-American running back is from Ohio.
Also, just look at an electoral votes map of states bordering Ohio and Iowa. That was a stupid take from an otherwise smart quality poster.

I think it’s already past that point and isn’t going back.

I’d spend my recruiting bucks in the portal and less on high school players who may not even be there in two years.

How does tOSU do it in the sparsely talented Midwest?
You joking? Ohio is the 7th most populous state in the country and extensively recruits the 5th most populous (Illinois), 6th (Pennsylvania) and 10th (Michigan) having been a blue blood, multi national champion winning program for around a century.

They weren’t undisciplined. Come on. They just didn’t play well and got beat by a Kansas team on a roll.

But I do owe you an apology. I probably mixed you up with the other Deion haters and I’m sorry about that. (Although I do wonder if you ask if other coaches will be “classy in defeat” or just Deion? )
They were not disciplined. They got chippy and lost their focus. KU is well coached and you cannot lose focus against a good team, which I think KU is trending towards under Leipold. Agree to disagree there.
Thanks.
Deion goes all Deion at times. I'm an Iowa fan whose life experience is two head coaches who oozed class. Never seen Kirk Ferentz talk too much about himself or dump a bucket of gatorade on anyone.

It is until they come up with a collective bargaining agreement and get contracting players in place.

As an Iowa fan, I loved Coach Fry. But to be perfectly honest, he had a tendency to do things that would piss me off if he was coaching a rival team. He had a little more swagger than Coach Ferentz and liked to play mind games a little more. And he didn’t much care what people thought about him.

I have several issues with Coach Prime. First and foremost is the self-aggrandizing. He named himself Coach Prime. And ironically he complained multiple times last season about late start times. How in the actual fvck can someone name himself Coach Prime and then complain about having to coach a game at 8pm?

I didn’t like the way he ran off half of the existing roster when he arrived and I didn’t like his arrogance when he met with the team. “I’m bringing my own luggage and it’s Louis (Vuitton).”

He claimed that when he was playing in Cincinnati he tried to commit suicide by driving his car off a 40 foot cliff. By the miracle of divine intervention, neither he nor his car got so much as a scratch. That doesn’t sound like the words of a man who is mentally stable.

Good for Colorado that they’re excited to have him. I’m glad he’s not at Iowa.

Just one final question… would you have watched the Colorado-Kansas game two years ago?

They also recruit well nationally, especially in Florida (which annoys the heck out of me).
