Hawkeye Women’s BBall Season 2023-2024

At this point imagining Ava's possible role on the team is sadly speculative, and we'll never know how good she could have been. But Hannah can't play 40 minutes, and will have to come out for fouls, etc. The question does remain re: who will play the 4 in those cases. Affolter is 5'11", and is usually used a wing, backing up Kate. Feuerbach usually comes in as a 2 or 3. Certainly Coach can play them at the 4, but ideally you'd like to have someone closer to Hannah's size and paint presence. Maybe Jada can grow into that role, but so far she is rarely seeing the floor. So this is an issue not just for this season, but ongoing. Will Mallegni become a 4, will Heiden see some time in a double-post, etc. And I'm sure Bluder is really hoping to land one of these athletic 6'1" or 6'2" recruits to solidify that 4 spot.

I wish the best for Ava, but I agree with Shik. I think our interior is Hannah, Addy and Goodman. Then Clark, Gabbie, Kate, Molly and Syd make our top 8 at this time. Bluder will play the next couple players McCabe, Kylie early hoping for improvement. Come conference the top 8 will get nearly all the minutes

You really think a freshman only ranked #80-something is going to jump a handful of older kids on a roster where Bluder can barely find minutes for half the team?

A lot of people were convinced McCabe would get regular minutes last year, or that Davis would come in averaging 15 pts a game. Neither prediction panned out bc it takes awhile to learn Iowa’s system (not to mention adjust to D1).

I just don’t see how Jones would crack the rotation when Bluder is already getting creative to find minutes for Affolter/Feuerbach. Gyamfi seems to have a similar profile to Jones but with a year of experience.

Btw a quick google search puts Ava’s height at 6’1 or 6’2 which is the same as Hannah.

Not sure why the last line...that is what I said. Also not going to argue about it because it's all hypothetical anyway

I absolutely think Mallegni can be a 4 in the Warnock mold. I'm not sure she'll rebound as well or finish inside as well, but she's a better ball-handler.

Of the wings that could rotate to the 4 for help would be Syd and Kate or even Clark at times. All can rebound
Syd is my candidate for Big Ten Sixth Player of the Year. She shows flashes every time she comes in the game. She can rebound, hustle or provide whatever is needed.

Warnock was rated #84 in 2019 by ESPN and played 18.9 minutes per game her freshman season.

That said, I do think Martin and Affolter would've filled the backup 4 minutes even if Ava was healthy. Affolter is good enough to be a rotation player. Davis and Feuerbach are going to take a lot of the backup minutes at the 2 and 3. Iowa's current roster is a lot deeper than the 2019-2020 team.

Warnock seems to have been pretty underrated tbh. She was trending up around her commitment and UConn was reportedly interested in her (this coming from UConn fans on Reddit during last season). I seem to recall chatter about Stanford as well.

But like Braydon said, this team is much deeper than the 2019-2020 roster — which is largely my point. It would take a highly talented freshman to break the rotation at any spot this year and I don’t think either of our freshman recruits, however talented, could have done it on this specific squad. This shouldn’t be surprising considering they’ve won 3 B1G titles in 2 years and are the most recent national runner-up.

It'll be interesting to see how Kylie fits into the puzzle. She was often the first one off the bench before her injury, and she has good quickness, length, plays decent D and can hit a three. Syd pretty much took over that role last year, and is playing at a high level. For Bluder, it's a good problem to have. Also, did you notice that at the end of the Clarke game Coach was using Taylor at PG? Makes me wonder if she's thinking of giving her some PG play ahead of next year. Might actually work, at least until Guyton works her way into a starter role.

The good thing about Kylie and Syd is they can conceivably be on the floor at the same time. Kylie is a 2/3 while Syd is a 3/4.

I also noticed that about McCabe playing the PG at the end of the Clarke game. I was especially surprised because KJE was in the game at that point and thought she would be the one to get a few PG reps.

Is there a link to the whole list, or the first 8 (Nos. 20-12)?
She does a video for each kid, I think she will put them all in a list when she’s done, like she did with this one:

I like McKeown. She is a bit of an independent thinker. Her pre-season AP ballot ranked Iowa No. 10, which, I believe, was Iowa’s lowest ranking by any of the 36 AP voters this year.
I think that's reasonable. I think #3 is rather fanciful. I have them at around #8, which if true at season's end, I'd consider it a very successful year.

So much this year depends on the 5 spot. If Ogrady/Goodman can deliver similar value to what Monica/Ogrady delivered last year (fewer points but offset by more rebounds and blocks) and Stuelke plays well (I think she has a chance to be a better overall than Warnock by the end of the year). I think Kate gets a little better, Gabby might as well. The 1-3 position has more depth this year. Backup 4 is still a ?

The wife and I finally get to go to a women’s game this year! Where is the best place to get a CC white jersey? I see that Nike has black but I think the white just looks so good

🧐 She says that Kate is a player to know but doesn’t know that this is her sixth year.

Charlie Creme posted the best and worst cases for all the teams ranked in the preseason top 25. Only three teams win the national championship in their best case scenarios, LSU, UConn and Iowa.

For what it's worth, the worst case scenario blurb is wrong. Davis and Feuerbach have started games for Iowa before this year. They were also both starters at other programs. Iowa likely has one of the most experienced backcourts in college basketball history starting the year.

Creme leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to details and nuance. He claimed last year that Addi was 6'5" lol. Also, all he sees is raw talent. He always assumes (perhaps fairly, not sure how else he would evaluate consistently without pissing people off or being accused of bias) that talented players will play to their ceiling, average players are unlikely to ever become more than that, and that all coaches are equally capable of executing their systems to a tee. We all know there's a lot more to it.

I try to give national writers a pass on some things because writing about so many teams is tough.

But lack of starting experience probably wouldn't make my top 10 list of concerns for this team. Stuelke and O'Grady both played 10+ minutes against South Carolina in the Final Four. They've faced plenty already.

Here's my preview of the backcourt for 2023-2024: https://iowa.rivals.com/news/iowa-women-s-basketball-2023-24-backcourt-preview

Clark, Marshall, and Martin have started an incredible 299 games for Iowa. Feuerbach and Davis add 4 starts for Iowa and 105 for other programs. With that vast experience it will be somewhat difficult to find minutes for players like McCabe and Affolter who would be regular rotation players on a less deep team.

The frontcourt preview should be up in the next day or two.

So excited for tonight! Are there any signing events coming up? Would love to get a basketball signed by the girls
