Hawkeyes at U20/23's

I'm not even sure ever to say about the second match from Gabe. Yeesh. Something to grow from, hopefully, but immensely frustrating to experience

I thought Drake was at 6 earlier, and then suddenly it was 4 again.

Either way, that was a classic Folkstyler doing Freestyle match.

Got to legs twice and couldn’t finish Zach got in once and finished.
Ryder was the guy Angelo wanted to wrestle as WNO, but didn’t happen. Really would have given us an idea how good angel is, now that we seen him and Gabe go at it. The announcers thought Gabe may beat him this time after a year in our room, but Ryder skipped last year of high school to work out with PSU and M2, so was like getting his first year in a college room also.

Do ever post anything that isn't Ferrari-related?

Why not celebrate both competitors absent contrived excuses/rationale.

I don't know how to take reading this. Is it to soften Gabe's loss and/or diminish Ryder's accomplishment?

Did Ryder really skip his last year of HS (or just last year of HS competition)? Did he go to HS or home school while moving to live in State College and take advantage of an elite club (M2) and maybe the NLWC RTC during his senior year of HS?

Don't most elite wrestlers go to elite clubs and train at RTCs (if qualified to) when they are HS Seniors (if not earlier)?

What about Gabe, when did he move to Iowa City (Summer of 2021, i.e. for his senior HS year)? When did Gabe first experience training time in the HWC?

Seems to me, by all reasonable measures, Gabe is a year ahead of Ryder, and Gabe's and Ryder's approaches remain sufficiently similar.

Except Drake has done quite a bit of freestyle in his life. He is quite small at the weight right now.

Point is, the announcer acted surprised Gabe didn’t win this time because he was in a college room for a year. Don’t try to pretend the recent trend of PSU best recruits skipping their senior year of COMPETITION to practice with the PSU college and senior level studs doesn’t given them an advantage their freshman year. My point was they were on even ground still, and your dude proved he’s still better. Gabe enjoyed moving to Iowa city with his family his senior year to do Iowa high school wrestling, but he would have had stiffer competition if he stayed at Sem his senior year.

I guess it's a choice each made. HS competition (of varying degrees of stiffness) vs more focused training. The degree each might be enjoyed or prioritized is for Ryder and Gabe to decide. To each his own.

Still, I would think Gabe was also training with a local elite club his senior year. I don't know how much access to the HWC he might've had. Maybe he didn't have any.

If you're saying dedicated training with elite partners is time better spent (wrestling improvement-wise) than enjoying less stiff HS competition, and the Flo announcer should've considered that, then I agree with you.

Gabe was in IC. I’m guessing he could find the level of training partners he wanted/needed.

Worlds in September? Going to be interesting to see if he passes on the World Wrestling Championships and sticks with fall football or chooses to wrestle. I don’t think he can just take a week of to go to Worlds and be effective.
Wasn't it in mid August last year? Captain Kirk might have to auth with FB games going in September. Hope he gets the chance to go back and repeat.

Haines and kasak have shown it’s a pretty good formula PSU has come up with for success right out of the gate. Do you think Ryder will also start as a true freshman?

I believe it is in early September this year - maybe about 3 weeks later than last year. Makes things a little more interesting for Keuter.

I think he'll be given a modest opportunity. I think he will use most RS Fr dates while maintaining his eligibility to rest B1G and NCAA starters.

Like others have noted, there is a bit of a logjam with Levi (or Messenbrink) potentially moving up, Facundo, Barr, Starocci, and Cochran. Can't see either Mirasola not RSing (save two injuries to upperclassmen at 197 and 285 each).

Remember, last year's baseline plan was for both Davis and Kasak to stay in RS until Howard couldn't perform and Van Ness's injury. I suspect the PSU coaches would prefer Ryder RS, since PSU doesn't appear to need his points. Again, an injury (or 2) and out of RS he may come.

I also personally believe Cael would love to have an undefeated 4-time champion (or two) join his ranks (now that he's coached two 4-timers and has one going for a 5th). Everything seems to be a game to him. I think he relishes raising the ante.

I believe Keuterdidn’t wrestle/ make team last summer, he was world champ 2022. He was going into his senior year of high school. So first real decision in college about wrestling and football.

Depends on who takes a RS. If Haines is on his way up to 174 but is in RS, and he can beat out Facundo, he might go.
