I think it is safe to say we all have 1 or 2 friends that are huge UNI homers and have a severe inferiority complex when it comes to sports. Here are some of the more comical things I've seen them put on social media since they won the MVC to punch their ticket:

Fran created the Big 4 showcase.
Fran is afraid to play @ UNI.
They forget that Iowa destroyed the MVC's best team this season (Wichita State).
Iowa and ISU need to play home and home series with UNI and Drake.
Fran can't duck playing UNI every year.
UNI would, without a doubt, beat Iowa.
Making fun of Iowa's loss at Penn State (UNI has 9 losses to teams with a higher RPI than Penn State).

I root for UNI to win every game they play when its not against Iowa. Most UNI fans understand that they truly are the little brother of the state but some of them are downright delusional. Anyone got any other good ones?

This is the one that bothers me if true. UNI only has themselves to blame for this one. That screw job the last time we played there was ridiculous. That gave Iowa no reason to play at UNI anymore. There's a lot of options in D-1 basketball to play against. No reason to play at places that are going to screw you over and possibly give you a loss without a fair shake.

Well, on the flip side, your post is a "good one".

I don't like the Big 4 thing either. And, I'm sick of everything being about MONEY. We should play UNI & Drake home/home every year.

As for it being Fran's fault, I don't know. Was it?

I forgive my UNI friends (and my daughter-in-law!) because UNI doesn't get the spotlight as much as Iowa, but they have a great school and terrific athletic programs.

Making fun of Iowa losing to Penn St is just dumb.

I'd rather not play Drake or UNI at all than go back to their place. I say fill the spot with a home/home with another P5 school.

That game is right on par with the Outback Bowl against Florida

I don't like the Big Four thing. Whatever the original impetus, it was heartily endorsed by ISU, so you can't blame (or credit) Fran exclusively.

My solution is perfect from all perspectives.

Make it a two-day affair; that would actually promote some business for Des Moines, as people would come to town and stay overnight.

The first day, ISU plays UNI/Drake and SUI plays the other one. The second day, the P5 teams switch.

Iowa and ISU continue their home-and-home series.

Result: ISU and Iowa play Drake and UNI -- and each other -- every year.

I'd say whoever they don't play at the Big 4 Classic, has to play at Iowa/Iowa State on a different date.

For example, Iowa played Drake this year in Des Moines (which is still essentially a home game for them), so then because they didn't play UNI, they would then host the Panthers in Iowa City at a later date. Iowa State would do the same with Drake.

They're already not getting a home game against either ISU or Iowa as it is. At least with this option they can't whine and complain about missing a chance to "beat" Iowa because they're so much better.....

Well know that Iowa is not a good finisher in tight games. Then, how about the Hawks play on the road at UNI and Drake? Perhaps it will toughen them up for B1G play.

Agree. We need to start playing on these teams on the road again. Always a good test & recently we were losing to both teams, UNI more so.

11-7 in the mvc. Hardly worth mentioning, certainly not worth bragging about. I guess Kirk is afraid of them too? LMAO.

SUI? You just cannot help yourself, now can you. Don't be a clown. I'm about as worried about Des Moines getting more business as I am my next meal.

As a UNI grad I cheer against them whenever possible after being in that little brother complex for 4 years. I went there for the college of education, not the mid-major sports. If you wore clothes (especially Iowa and Iowa State) you would get ridiculed to no end on campus. I remember seeing a girl wearing a UCONN basketball hoodie getting mercilessly made fun of by some random guy, it was ridiculous. They will always think they're better at everything. In fact, I remember Andy Thorn (undrafted) saying in the paper that he was the best TE in the state, even though Iowa had Erik Jensen, Tony Jackson and Scott Chandler (all drafted) on its roster at the time.

SUI is not an insult. Iowa fans who think it's an insult are bigger idiots than ISU fans who try to use it as an insult

Wyatt Lohaus turned down the opportunity to play at Iowa because he and his dad hated Fran and the staff is the best one I consistently hear. I've realized the farther away I am from Cedar Falls and UNI fans, the easier it is to cheer for the panthers.

In my experience as a fan of both teams (and I get massive hate for this)

UNI fans really hate Iowa. This is because they think they are Iowa's equal, and they reject people who grew up hawks/clones, and want to still like them even if they like UNI better. I would like it if every Iowa team played each other, but I can understand why Iowa and Iowa State don't want to go to UNI/Drake. Iowa is the top program in the state, much like Ohio State dominates Ohio, or Alabama dominates Alabama.UNI cannot match Iowa in recruiting, or resources, or sales ect.

Iowa fans tend to like UNI, but think they are a "cute" little program, who win a few games once and a while, with their inferior players. Let's be honest here. UNI has had the better program in the 2000s. Yes, The big ten is a better conference than the MVC, and you can argue all you want that UNI would never go .500 in the big ten, but they have gone farther than Iowa since 2000, in the NCAA tournament, have had more appearances, and often win head to head. You can argue, that's due to Iowa being down, which is somewhat true, but UNI did beat Iowa in their best 2 seasons of the 2000s (superbowl or not)

As a lifelong fan, legacy, and degree holder of both schools the UNI fanbase has developed a passionate niche that may end up burning them in the long run. They have managed to antagonize part of the iowa fanbase that cheered for both schools. Unfortunately this is a much larger part of their fanbase than these diehards want to admit. I know people who grew up going to UNI games that now don't give a rats ass if they drop to D2. It's fine to be passionate about your school but there are plenty of Butler fans who cheer for IU and Toledo fans that cheer for tOSU. It's not a winnable battle in terms of public perception or finance. But they have their true believers, egged on by a certain Play by Play guy who also hates Iowa, who are convinced that UNI is on equal footing of ISU and even Iowa. This is based on a whopping 13 years of having a decent basketball program that happens to have coincided with the darkest years of both iowa and iowa state.

It kills me to type a post that will be perceived as negative towards UNI but these are facts. There is strong passion within the UNI fanbase but the numbers simply aren't big enough. 20 years ago if a state rep for Ottumwa would have asked for $20mm from iowa and iowa state to help out UNI athletics no one would have paid attention. Now there was outrage against it. Why? Mainly because UNI fans haven't been able to handle success.

And I don't want to hear anything about the Big Four. It's more profitable for UNI than home and homes. And despite iowa being AWFUL they played UNI to a draw during the Panthers best run ever. It's Iowa State that struggles to beat UNI at ANY location for going on twelve years. Any who thinks pollard didn't push this is completely blind.

Lol what? Fran wasn't going to offer, and told him so very early out of respect for his AAU program.

Could say that about every team. When I lived out of state, I actually found myself cheering for ISU. Now that I live in Des Moines, not so much.

Yeah... It's tough to talk to them about sports because they live on another planet. And they never talk good about Iowa, it's only the negatives.

I was once at an away UNI game, non-conference, and some people were cheering for UNI but wearing Iowa gear. One UNI fan was screaming at this guy wearing Iowa gear, and called him little brother, and said Iowa was a bunch of cowards because they were afraid to play UNI. I didn't understand it- the guy wearing Iowa gear was cheering for UNI.

John Higgins was one of the refs when Fran went ape at UNI.

Are some of you suggesting Higgins was part of a conspiracy against Iowa and was paid off by UNI or the MVC conference?

Fran has a laundry list of incidents of acting like a douche on the sideline. I think it is obvious the AD and Iowa administration put his butt in a chair and told him to dial in down about five clicks or he was going to get in some serious trouble.

I have no doubt that incident ended the series, I am sure Iowa State didn't like it either and are very happy to get out of it without looking like the bad guy.

ROFLMAO, busting out the Oliver Stone starter kits.

I think UNI gets the most bang for their buck when compared to Iowa and Iowa State in terms of athletics.

Talk of the Big Four went back to Alford.

A few UNI admins tried to show up Fran that game. It was very small time of them and they paid the price. Fran and Jake have become quite friendly.

Can't stand John Higgins. What an over-rated official. So glad he's not doing many if any B1G games.

Bang for their buck??? Is that why UNI is not self-funded and wants Iowa/ISU to pay their bills?

John Higgins and coaches being ejected is a common theme with Higgins.

That wasn't Uni asking for that. It was an out of touch state rep.

If you want to kill every school that doesn't have self funded athletics you will not have much left.

That video of Iowa and Forida in football is crazy. The face mask penalty and offsides penalty are crazy. I remember bad officiating but it's been a long time since I saw those replays.

First I am not opposed to UNI not being entirely self funded (within reason) and it makes sense to me why. I am opposed to Iowa/ISU having to subsidize UNI athletics. That's ridiculous.

Second I am truly happy for UNI and the success they have had.

Like the title of this post what's gotten bad is the section of UNI fans that act like total idiot wannabes. It used to be Iowa & UNI fans got along really well and supported one another. Despite some success in bball, many of their fans have become even more insecure, not less. Every time they do anything they fly off the handle wanting Iowa to want their coach or validate their players. Then they want to compare their situation in the MVC to the B1G which is apples to oranges with Iowa. It's not the same and that's not Iowa's fault. Enjoy what you have for as long as you have it.

I never heard anyone wearing another schools logo get made fun of in my 3 years at UNI getting my accounting degree. In reality most were fans of another school first. It wasn't/isn't called the suitcase college for no reason. I cheer for them when not playing Iowa, but I grew up an Iowa fan attending football, men's and women's basketball and wrestling.

Always an outside change Iowa could face UNI in the NCAA tournament. Hard to take any MVC team seriously. Especially when they will only probably get 2 teams in the NCAA tournament and if Wichita State would of won the MVC tournament probably only one team.

LOne Clone your idea is better than the status quo for sure. I would like to see it be a regular tournament. 2 games on Day 1, the losers play each other the next day and the winners play each other to end the tournament. The way it is now is kind of pointless.

UNI was the better basketball program for several years running, and may be closer to Iowa this year than we'd like to think. I believe UNI would be a VERY tough out for this Iowa team were they to face each other in the tourney. Gotta hand it to 'em. They get a lot of bang out of the few bucks they have to spend. I cheer for 'em when they're not playing the Hawks. Having said that, the bill introduced by a right-wing GOP lawmaker from western Iowa to force Iowa and ISU to share sports revenues with UNI is ridiculous.
