Idiot UNI friends

Uni should go away. The whole school should just be folded into Iowa and Iowa state. They bring zero value to the state as a stand alone entity especially now that we have decided to compete for in state students. Take away the brand of uni and make the campus a satellite for the two real regent universities.

As a UNI grad I cheer against them whenever possible after being in that little brother complex for 4 years. I went there for the college of education, not the mid-major sports. If you wore clothes (especially Iowa and Iowa State) you would get ridiculed to no end on campus. I remember seeing a girl wearing a UCONN basketball hoodie getting mercilessly made fun of by some random guy, it was ridiculous. They will always think they're better at everything. In fact, I remember Andy Thorn (undrafted) saying in the paper that he was the best TE in the state, even though Iowa had Erik Jensen, Tony Jackson and Scott Chandler (all drafted) on its roster at the time.

Geez. Self worth tied a little to close to a sports team that doesn't give a damn if you even exist.

LOne Clone your idea is better than the status quo for sure. I would like to see it be a regular tournament. 2 games on Day 1, the losers play each other the next day and the winners play each other to end the tournament. The way it is now is kind of pointless.

But Drake and UNI play each other twice a season already. Why possibly add a 3rd time, and a second Iowa/ISU game?

Well said, L.

And I am not a conspiracy buff, but didn't Iowa pick up their first foul in that game at UNI with under 10 off the clock? And wasn't the police escorting McCaffery off the court a bit over the top?

Fran has a laundry list of incidents of acting like a douche on the sideline. I think it is obvious the AD and Iowa administration put his butt in a chair and told him to dial in down about five clicks or he was going to get in some serious trouble.

.

This is nowhere close to the truth. Unless Barta outright lied,(he didn't) this never happened as you say. Fran was not warned by the AD and was NEVER in any kind of trouble. There were high jinks in this game, if you want to call it a conspiracy go right ahead. The fix was in and the cop was sure there awfully quickly. I have never seen this before in any arena. UNI tried to embarrass Fran. The game was called very unevenly and anyone can see that. I doubt they will ever see Iowa back in their crackerbox gym again. When UNI came to CHA they were always treated with respect. There was no respect that day at UNI for the Iowa Hawkeyes.

UNI and Coach Ben have a fantastic program up there in Cedar Falls. What happened that day however was bush league and I believe their people know it.

To worry about UNI, ISU, and what their fans think about Iowa gets boring. When a Iowa is on top in the state they're always going to have the underlings taking shots at them. They will never overtake them mainly because of the bigger tradition Iowa has in the state. As far as UNI and their basketball, until they play in a league that is relevant they are no more than a fly in a spider web, a blimp on the radar, a flash in the pan, last weeks news, or just a pimple on Iowa's ass.

I think it is safe to say we all have 1 or 2 friends that are huge UNI homers and have a severe inferiority complex when it comes to sports. Here are some of the more comical things I've seen them put on social media since they won the MVC to punch their ticket:

Fran created the Big 4 showcase.
Fran is afraid to play @ UNI.
They forget that Iowa destroyed the MVC's best team this season (Wichita State).
Iowa and ISU need to play home and home series with UNI and Drake.
Fran can't duck playing UNI every year.
UNI would, without a doubt, beat Iowa.
Making fun of Iowa's loss at Penn State (UNI has 9 losses to teams with a higher RPI than Penn State).

I root for UNI to win every game they play when its not against Iowa. Most UNI fans understand that they truly are the little brother of the state but some of them are downright delusional. Anyone got any other good ones?
I missed UNI kicking MSU's ass twice as well as Purdue and Wichita St..

I don't like the Big Four thing. Whatever the original impetus, it was heartily endorsed by ISU, so you can't blame (or credit) Fran exclusively.

My solution is perfect from all perspectives.

Make it a two-day affair; that would actually promote some business for Des Moines, as people would come to town and stay overnight.

The first day, ISU plays UNI/Drake and SUI plays the other one. The second day, the P5 teams switch.

Iowa and ISU continue their home-and-home series.

Result: ISU and Iowa play Drake and UNI -- and each other -- every year.
I'm against that plan because it would cost us another home game. I'd love to play them both, but not at the cost of a home game. When you are a Cedar Rapids resident with a condo in Ames for staying during sporting events the feelings are very strong.

Interesting thread...though where I am seems like almost all UNI fans/grads are Iowa fans.

This is will continue to be true for at least another generation. We are only now seeing kids that were raised to cheer for only UNI. Eastern Iowa was full of dual fans for the last 30 years. I am one of them.

This is not a knock on Northern Iowa. They simply have not been Division I that long and have not established much of a grassroots fanbase. That is certainly changing though. Right now basically anyone over age 40 at one point knew of Northern Iowa as a division 2 school.

Moving to FBS football would continue to evolve it further. Northern Iowa has a fantastic football program but the bottom line is that more fans prefer to watch big time football. However doing away with the gateway rivalries may hurt fan interest a bit. The football question will be something northern Iowa must address over the next 10 to 15 years But I think they could certainly maintain a very successful second tier program in whatever the current group of 5 division ends up being after the NCAA changes.

This is beyond stupid.Really have to question your intellect.

Stupid is continuing to pay for an inferior athletic department and a school that does not and can not support itself. Stupid is taking a school like uni that does not support itself and bleeding Iowa state and Iowa in order to prop up uni. if proposals can be made to take away from the two strongest schools in the state to prop up uni in academics and athletics as have been done then the inverse also must be asked. What exactly does uni offer that isn't being done better at Iowa and Iowa state? The answer of course is nothing. Uni does nothing better and is simply a drain. Fold them into the better two institutions as a satellite campus. Much more efficient and a much better brand and product.

Please leave the state.

Moronic.

UNI has a niche in the state. Iowa has 3 state schools. 2 Major schools and a smaller school. South Dakota has something like 8 state schools. USD and SDSU are the major schools and then there are 6 smaller stand alone campus's. SD is a much smaller state. If they can support 8 state schools I think Iowa can support 3.

D 1 in football is not going to happen.

What Uni is waiting for is the next round of conference moves. If the power conferences form their own league (top 56 to 64 schools) to monopolize all the money in football and basketball, UNI would probably be able to compete in the next level down.

This next level would be schools where none of them are self supporting and they might agree to cut scholarships in som sports to save money. This new affiliation might also cut down on the number of sports necessary to compete with like schools.

Those of you calling me moronic or telling me to leave the state please explain in light of the attacks Iowa has had to endure against its funding why exactly uni is above examination.

What exactly do they offer that isn't done better at the other two schools. What business reason exists for the brand of uni. There truly isn't a reason beyond sentimental nonsense.

Anything being delivered by uni is also being delivered by Iowa and Iowa state at a much higher level in almost every regard.

If we as a state need a campus to serve that part of the state then do so through the two regent universities that deliver results at a higher level and stop funding a school that can't figure out how to support itself. Higher education is changing and we as a state need what Iowa and Iowa state offer. Not so much uni

Teacher education. For one.

No uni does not have better teacher education than the university of Iowa. It is a strong department but Iowa already does perform the exact same function at just a high a level if not higher.

Some of their business programs. The accounting program had one of the top CPA pass rates around for first timers.

If we are going down that road each major should only be offered at one state institution. Unless you are telling me all Iowa departments are self funded.

Pot, meet kettle. Countless times I've heard the "you live in Iowa, you should root for Iowa" comment. How arrogant is that?
Telling an ISU fan that is asinine.

There is nothing wrong telling that to a Nebby fan with no ties to UNL other than they are a mouth breather that loves to yell, "Go Big Red!"

The idea of getting in state students is something Iowaaah never considered before? I would have thought that would be a goal.
