Should these automatic byes be reconsidered? I am fine with automatic bids. But why do Boise State and Arizona State deserve a first round bye?

Frankly, it’s the same issue the NFL is facing right now with the loser of the Detroit/Minnesota game not only losing a first-round bye but having to go on the road for a wild card game.

Anyone want to defend the current format?

Yes. 3 sec teams and 1 big ten team getting a bye every year sucks

I want a 16 team playoff and couldn’t care less if the first round has blowouts. I do not like the byes either which adds to my opinion that it should be 16 teams.

This isn't going to be the case going forward.

Agreed. I like automatic bids, but not automatic byes.

I will be surprised if there are any byes next season. Hosting a playoff game >> than a bye week. Also it is far more $$$, which is really the only factor that matters.

Lol. Nice response.

Never mind. You obviously don’t have an answer beyond your feelings.
I have an answer and it was in the initial post. Thus the question about whether you are dumb.

It will never not be weighted by ESPN to the sec. Every year. At every opportunity. ESPN has had the say and want to continue to have the say and it needs to end.

If we do it your way this is just an ESPN script and nothing more.

The rout is on.

The Big XII champion looking like they don’t belong on the same field with the second best team in the SEC right now.

I felt all year BIG 12 receiving first round bye was trash. I think Auto bids is how it should be but then seed it by CFP rankings once you get your qualified teams. ASU going from unranked to automatic first round bye in less than a month playing in a conference that at times looked like a mess.

Lol.

Keep digging that hole.

Show us on the doll where ESPN hurt you. 😝

Alabama should be in... lost Miami should be in lost. Shit happens. It's not like ASU is playing Wartburg.
ASU should be in over Miami and Bama. Going from unranked mid November to first round bye is the issue. Probably will eventually be ironed out.

I know I'm in the minority, but I like the current system. I believe the conference champions should be rewarded with a bye. It's an incentive to win your conference and not rely on a room full of "committee" members.

The argument isn’t that ASU shouldn’t be in the CFP. The argument is they, like Boise State, do not deserve an automatic bye just because they won their conference.
Agree, expand and get rid of byes? So we can more blow outs? As long as networks can get the ad money, because that's all college football has become $$$$.

It doesn't work because of how unbalanced the conferences are today. The inequality will only continue to grow in the coming years. OSU and Oregon should not be playing each other today. It's dumb. Guarantee the conference champions a bid, not a bye.

They should have been beforehand. Regardless of what happened to Boise and what’s going to happen to ASU.
