If Arizona State gets smoked today…

It isn't just ASU/Boise getting byes. The bigger issue is the preferential seeding they earn. It would be like Stetson or Montana St getting at least an 8 seed in the NCAA this past year because they won their conference tournament. Instead, they rightly were given the 16 seed.

Does that validate Iowa? Lmao. People look at Iowa as a joke too.

Ideologically impaired conspiracy theorists drive me ****ing crazy anymore.
It isn't a conspiracy you tool. Espn is in bed with the sec and has been through their entire rise to dominance. Espn was responsible for breaking up the big 12 to arrange this exact situation we are in now and want to control the entire thing. They have billions of dollars at stake. Espn is also still pissed off they didn't get to **** over the big ten and the conference started their own network rather than letting espn rape them.

You seem dim.

I won't watch a single second of college football since Iowa is done, but the best part of seeing ASU getting stomped is knowing Iowa State fans thought they were a playoff team. Texas would drop 50 on those losers.

No, they should go down to 8.

There's no way the #12 or #16 team in the country is secretly the best one that's going to March past 3 Top 10 teams in a row to win it all.

Once you get past the top 6ish teams it's just participation awards.
8 teams also preserves the bowl games as a special event for everybody but the select few power teams playing for the national championship. It would make for far better and more competitive CFP games. Far better for a Clemson or Boise State to end their season in a competitive meaningful bowl game.

The NCAA jacked this up like they have everything else.

lol I grew up in Iowa as a huge Hawkeye fan. I went to asu and enjoyed my time there. Sorry if I find Iowa fans rooting for the SEC weird
Who is rooting for the SEC exactly? I think most clear thinking folks believe seeding should reflect the relative quality of the teams. Neither Boise nor ASU was among the top 4 teams in the country. Giving them byes and forcing an Oregon/OSU matchup in the quarterfinals makes zero sense. It also would have made round one more competitive.

Ewers under throwing open WRs deep in the first Q if he hits both it’s probably 28-3 at half. Who knows if the 6 Mil rumors are legit but he’s not worth 6 mil to play one year in your program.

Asu now 300 yards to Texas 128 yards. Asu has been blowing this by giving it over on downs 3 times.

The whole seeding thing is stupid but I think ASU at least showed that they belonged. Suspect that as ASU has to up the risk levels that Texas will finally pull away.

The reason everyone has different opinions, and none will be satisfied, is because of the subjective nature. It makes it an invitational tournament and should be addressed as such. If folks really want a playoff, then make it a playoff of conference champions, in typical high-low pairings according to rankings.

There would be plenty of exciting non-conference champions to make great bowl matchups.

Tournament of Champions, plus great bowl games would be preserved. That’d get my vote. Otherwise, whatever, watch what some committee tells you are the best.

I agree with automatic byes

I think there needs to be a bye for the top 4 teams. They need to be rewarded for the season they had. The goal is to put the best 4 teams in the best position to win the playoffs.

What I would suggest is:

A- keep it at 12. I'm fine with all the teams that did and didn't get in this year. You have to win games. Alabama, Ole Miss, etc don't like it? Leave the SEC so you don’t have 3 or 4 losses. This should never be done based on recruiting rankings, history, etc.

B- don't start any rankings until week 4. AP and coaches included. Pre session rankings skew so much early on. It took two weeks for Florida St. to get knocked out (no offense FSU faithful here).

C- keep the byes for the top 4 teams, but only 2 teams can be from the same conference. It won't be perfect but PSU and Texas will be advancing to the semi finals and were the #3 and #4 teams. That extra game took a toll on these guys as PSU might be missing guys. This makes it easier for ND/Georgia.

*D- I'm being proven wrong based on attendance right now but I think the first two rounds should be on campus. Do it for the fans and do it for one of the reasons we all love college football, the atmosphere. Save the sterile half and half crowds for the final 4. PLUS, it saves many of the fans of these teams money. It would be crazy expensive to go to all 3 or 4 games and a lot of missing work. Most people can't do that.

I'm rooting for ASU, sorta. I just don't like the SEC.

However, I'm not following your point. I'm not sure I see anyone validating Iowa. We were simply not great this year and lost to two really bad teams, one decent team that was covered up by some teams I don't think are good in their conference and one that if they win today might win the whole thing. That's 1.5 losses that are okay, 2.5 that showed we had no business being in the top 25. Then blew a game against a mid team in a bowl game to top it off.

Should these automatic byes be reconsidered? I am fine with automatic bids. But why do Boise State and Arizona State deserve a first round bye?

Frankly, it’s the same issue the NFL is facing right now with the loser of the Detroit/Minnesota game not only losing a first-round bye but having to go on the road for a wild card game.

Anyone want to defend the current format?
I heard that the cfp big wigs have already said they are changing the seeding to a ranking system rather than best records by conf champs or whatever the hell they are using now.

And back to your thread title question, if AZ gets smoked today it just shows how far ISU is behind these top teams just like us and how ISU is lucky TX and OU, the regular OU, left the Big 12.

Ewers missed two big deep throws in first Q while it was on the edge of a blowout now tosses INT. I can see why Texas fans are hoping he leaves.

ASU is legit.
