Illinois Coach/players post game pressser

I'm pretty sure the assistant told fran "that's bullshit" twice referring to Weiskamp dunking at the end instead of dribbling it out

Then Illinois shouldn’t have been pressing and trying to swipe ball out of Iowa players hands (even to the last seconds when down by 7). Can’t have it both ways - you can’t be playing like the game is still in doubt and then get mad when the opponent tries to score. And then to have assistant coaches yell at players - Fran had every right to not have them go through the line.

Chin Coleman’s e-mail is available on the Illinois website if anyone wants to let him know what a d-bag he is.

Really good press conference, If you want to compete at a high level in the Big you better bring some toughness and attitude, IMO this is by far Fran’s toughest team, It’s great to see.
might be his best coaching job...Ever.

Last year's starting line up vs this years:

JBo vs JoeT
Moss vs Fredrick
Weezy.....Weezy
Cook vs Connor
Garza.....Garza

I'm glad Fran was pissed. Twelve seconds is a long time in BB, if you can score--do it. Four seconds left in the game though and down by seven the game is over, start walking to the locker room, don't hack someone's arm.

yep just ask UNI

Just watched the end of the Florida State vs Virginia Tech game. Very similar ending. Florida state dunks with about 15 to 20 seconds to go, up 8. Virginia tech just finishes it out, shakes hands and walks off of the court

Here is my take on the end of the game.

Illinois was still playing IE pressing when Connor threw the outlet for the break away dunk. They are still playing so Iowa still played.

Now if Illinois was just standing around letting the time run out and Iowa did that, then that is indeed bush league.

When Connor threw the long outlet pass to Joe, we were in the double bonus, up by 8, with 14 seconds left on the clock and about to be intentionally fouled,... To be honest, the smartest play for Iowa would have been to take the foul and go to the line, because if Joe misses that risky pass, we get nothing... The Illini shouldn't take issue with this ill advised play because it probably gave them their last chance to have something possibly go their way...

Sorry not impressed with Underwood. No reason to call a time out with 4 seconds left down 7 unless you want to instigate something with the other team. Total classless, bush league move.
Or, you're trying to coach your team for similar situations when you are down within 1 possession later in the year.

I don't love the timeout call, but if they want to work on something with the situation they have, that's their call.

As someone who historically hates Illannoy, I think this is the best team they have had in years, and like the Hawks, they are very young. If they can keep their PG and center from entering the NBA draft, they will be one of the better teams in the B1G for a while. I think Underwood should have called off his players at the end of the game, but I think the dunk by Weesy had a lot to do with that. Gonna be a war on their court, and for the next few years. Great B1G basketball that is fun to watch, if the zebras don't get too involved.

That's what practice is for.

Illinois fans on the interwebz complaining that Connor "threw an elbow" at their player (Ayo) who was punching at the ball and that was one of the reasons everyone got upset. Like some of them honestly believe Connor threw an elbow (lol) and did so without being provoked (huge lol).

Connor on what happened at the end.

He basically says there was no beef between the players, but the post game hoopla happened because the refs let Illinois slap him up without calling a foul. I don't love Connor talking about the refs in public, but I have to agree with him.

If you're a ref, call the damn foul. They were trying to foul. IMO opinion, the party with the most fault in the post-game fiasco were the referees.
love connor. great guy it seems

B Underwood seems like a class A d-bag
I disagree. Underwood admitted to rough play saying the plan was to hit Garza every time he touched the ball. The guy you should have a problem with is Gard. He coaches a player to slug screeners in the family jewels then pretends it didn't happen. He is a flat out liar. Underwood is a tough old coach and doesn't pretend to be anything less.

I seriously doubt that Gard coaches this kind of play,..I suspect that he just pretends not to see it....

Not condoning our assistants at all, but my impression was there was as much offense taken by Garza staring down our bench after multiple shots as a dunk that was, as people have said, during active play. Garza is a fantastic player, but I remember him blowing a kiss to an NU cheerleader after scoring in Evanston. Players who seem like they’re egging on the other team/staff/fans are going to piss some people off, right or not.

So why was he upset?

Not disagreeing, but the dunk being the spark has been the prevailing opinion from what I’ve seen
I heard it was the full court pass, which makes sense as their coach appears to be yelling at cmac.

I've also heard the dunk though, so who knows....

Right, when I said the dunk, I meant that whole play in general. My assumption, based on the coaches’ reaction, as well as other posts here, was that that play was what irked them

I thought Fran handled that about as well as he could’ve. Even stayed back to shake the hands of all the Illini players

Agreed. I hadn’t realized Fran stayed on the court. Fredrick gets shoved by one of his own coaches. lol.

I’ll admit that I threw out a few boos when Illinois left the court. The irony of all this sportsmanship talk and “Another one bites the dust” playing over the PA as Illinois leaves the court should also not go unnoticed.

It was an unfortunate negative ending to a hard fought game.
Expect illanoy to be fired up to deliver a beating on the return engagement.

Garza blew a kiss to an NU cheerleader? And that is suddenly an insult?

He has stared down other players who have mouthed off to him. He does his talking with his play. And that is how it should be.

I just rewatched it, and noticed that as Fredrick was getting pushed back, somebody, presumably from Illinois’ side, yelled “Watch your mouth Fredrick!” as he had a huge grin on his face. Guy’s pretty cocky for a RS Freshman, and I’m here for it

I thought Coach Underwood and his players displayed a lot of class during their postgame interviews. Really, the true idiots in this whole situation were the two Illini asst. coaches. Of course, if you read the Illini forums, their fans are all over Coach McCaffery and the Iowa players.

Definitely hear that and it sounds like it’s coming from Fran. But it’s hard to hear. I like how Wieskamp can see over everyone in front of him and is one of the first to realize this isn’t a normal handshake. It also looks like Feliz was ready to mix it up some.
