Iowa school district shuttering...

Umm, are you saying the ultra-conservative areas of Iowa are all old people?

Not all. But a lot. Ioway Dems only have a chance if the shit small towns of Ioway die off and the people with them while growing urban centers. Everyone acknowledges this slow death is happening. And it starts with the old farts.

Don’t get me wrong, you’ll always have the Orange City, Pella and all the derangement that comes with that.

Getting back to school closings and budget crunches, it's ridiculous to only increase funding to public schools <3%.

Fixed expenses...utilities, fuel for busses, buildings maintenance, and the like have all risen by more than that.
The State's Republicans are major contributors to the problems.
They are intentionally underfunding public education to further their narrative.

Ignored in all of this...private schools are still individually selecting who to accept.
Maybe Regina accepting those minority students that are good at soccer or T&F fits that narrative of "not just white kids".

The kids with intellectual challenges stay in the public setting because private schools don't want to "sully" their student body.
It's understandable that public schools won't test as well. And it gives the private school advocates ammunition to say..."see, I told you so".

Gonna be great in 2/3 years when the voucher program costs exceed estimates by 4X and taxpayers won't have a clue because Terrace Hill/Dept of Education won't allow an audit.
Still angry that Iowa's school age children and their parents have a choice regarding their childrens education?

I thought you Dim Dems were all for "choice"?

I believe in the Constitution and the separation of Church and State more than I believe in my “right” to choose anything. The more “church and religion is validated, the less my ability to “choose” is enhanced.

Don't worry about DUIs if you voted for Dim Kim!

In fact, maybe that's how she was elected? Voters didn't want her driving a vehicle, since Governors get chauffered.

My granddaughter's 4th grade teacher in a small Iowa Town held a mock election before the last gubernatorial election. In it she said who would you support Kim Reynolds who loves babies or DeJean who wants to kill babies? No she wasn't pushing any political agenda was she? Typical old lady Republican. What a sham.
Smart teacher. 😉

My comment was not a "whataboutism".

The Iowa Governor is the main player in this cluster@%&$.
BTW...The supposed State budget surplus that she thinks will fund the voucher charity program will soon have a HUGE dent taken out of it when the Iowa/ISU gambling victims get their settlement, at the expense of Iowa taxpayers.
Agreed - that college student gambling sham was the dumbest thing the state of Iowa ever got involved with.

See...I knew we'd find common ground.

But if you knew why they went after ISU and Iowa, I bet we would view it differently.

No….in this case it’s more ignorance of the Constitution.
Then where exactly does the separation lay in the intentions of the framers?

Same argument with gun rights. Open to interpretation. U and most others believe in politics and power from a point of view, not necessarily what thevframers intended. Choice is a political position. As is a lack of choice.

They wrote the Constitution knowing stuff was going to change…hence they gave the Courts and tge Oeopke ways to change the document. But as Ben Franklin said…@now, the people gave to be smart enough to maintain” the government the FF gave us. Right now IIowa, the population isn’t smart enough to do this.

Move somewhere where your anti American Marxist beliefs are embraced, maybe NY or CA.

Exactly… it does not. However Jefferson (a founding father) as President did interpret the 1st Anendnent that origins the state founding a religion as well as interfering with its practices @buikding a wall” between church and state. His view has been universally accepted by legal and Constitutional scholars. I am sure that dies meet with your high standards but sometimes busybody you just gave to move in and fight your battle somewhere else.

Weird, we actually have more freedoms here in California. Our government doesn’t tell us what to do with our bodies. Oh, and UC system is the best in the country.
Freedoms in Iowa are going by the wayside fast. The Republican led old white man government wants to tell us everything to do, when we can do it, who to do it with, and even what we can read. But hey... they love "protecting freedoms"...

I love this unnecessary and petty shot at West Delaware and Independence. Thank you.

Yep, a rather misinformed and ignorant comment.

As someone that has attended many high school sporting events there, they have above average facilities and there is $$$ in that town.

Not misinformed at all....has nothing to do with enrollment...just close the school and the town for good. Maybe making the people disperse and live alongst non-inbreds will save the next generation from having to suffer the fate of existing there.

SW part of the State.

Rural districts will be desolving like crazy in the next five years and those kids will be riding a bus for 90 minutes to get to their new school.
And parents will be looking for daycare and babysitters as the need arises.

That ESA account won't cover those costs.
Good. And we need this to happen more. Time to consolidate some of these small schools, become more efficient, save the tax payers. In the end, it probably creates better opportunities and education for the students too.

So as school district dissolve how far should kids trek daily to school? 15-20 miles one way…round trip? What about participating in extracurricular school events. Stanza, you talk a big game but you haven’t thought thru it very well.

When we lived in Iowa we chose to send our kids to a private catholic school partly because the public school lacked teachers. Many classrooms had permanent subs, some who weren’t even licensed teachers. The kicker is they had instructional coaches…..former teachers who get paid(higher wages?)to do what exactly? Can someone explain the reasoning for this….perhaps Tom P knows?

OMG either you are lying or you're obtuse because teachers and entire schools are pushing political agendas.
Where did you teach Rico Suave?? I taught for 24 years in elementary school. Now here is what has happened since the far right basket cases have implemented since they took over my district's school board:
They love to ban books. Kindergarten teachers...1st grade teachers( and all the classroom teachers (2-4) have had to enter every book in their classroom libraries ( think like Bernstein bears/ Dr Seuss/ any book from scholastic...) you know books kids read when they are learning howto read, teachers had to scan books and create a database and find book reviews on all of these books for students who are just learning to read and submit this to the school board. Do you have any idea how many books are in a kindergarten classroom library?? Easily over 1000.

One of the bright moves that the maga school board implemented at one of our middle schools was to ban a book that was the biography of the namesake of the school itself. Dawson Middle School ( Carroll ISD/Southlake, Texas). Dawson was named after George Dawson. A black man who grew up in Dallas and learned to read when he was 98. Amazing story about an amazing man. He grew up in the Jim Crow days and when he was young, a friend of his was lynched ( accused of raping a white girl...later found to innocent...you know Like Emmit Till) well that school board decided that the book is to violent for 7th & 8th graders...eben though it had been a tradition for the students to read since the school opened. Solid bold move maga folk.

Scholastic news is now banned in all of the Carroll Schools because one of the maga school members. She thought it was pushing a leftist idiology ....great move maga folk
