It is no secret even among Cyclone fans that they haven't had much success in recent years except with Iowa. In Ferentz 19th year he can now boast a career winning record against ISU for the first time at 10-9 certainly not anything to boast about.I hope ISU enjoys their season. As we know, the special seasons can be few and far between.
2 more wins and they will have accomplished something they haven't since 2000 season. Finish above .500 in conference play.I hope ISU enjoys their season. As we know, the special seasons can be few and far between.
I'd like to think it helps us when they are good but I don't think it does. It certainly helps our strength of schedule when they are good but not much else. We still get a lot of our players from Iowa and it's rare that recruits choose ISU over us. If ISU starts getting some of those players over us, it will hurt us. I often wonder how much better Iowa athletics would be if we had just one major school in the state like Nebraska, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Ohio State.I'm glad to see ISU actually doing good.
Good points, and it makes me wonder how it will change the dynamics of how the AD handles Iowa coaches going forward as far as accountability if ISU establishes itself as a decent program. I think up until now Barta has not had to worry too much about Ferentz not getting us to bowl games, and one reason is as you mentioned: taking for granted that Iowa has been the elite university in the state while taking for granted ISU hasn't been a factor; i.e. Iowa usually gets the better in-state recruits. If ISU has shown to consistently compete going forward, then Ferentz will have to step up his recruiting effort, but will he do it? Because we all know we're stuck with him for a while.I'd like to think it helps us when they are good but I don't think it does. KSU is struggling, but is still good. KU sucks. Texas has been getting the most out of a good defense. But you're right that the league is not as strong this year as it has been in the past. When was the last time Iowa went on the road and beat a top 5 team? Was it PSU in 2009? I think its a great thing for ISU. It will definitely help the cy-hawk series moving forward.
They are feasting on a "weaker" Big 12 than normal. Baylor is way down, Texas is still living in the Vince Young years, KU & K-state are struggling. The opportunities are there for ISU to have a special season. Even if they lose to TCU, there are still some W's left on their schedule. I just hope they can finish it and get a bowl game.
hell at Iowa's rate, they might miss a bowl game this year.
