Iowa State preview/predictions

Okay

Okay, 8/9 boy, we'll see next week. im saying we wouldn't win 74, 84
You suggesting Brands couldn't beat Gaitan if he was eligible? Gaitan is a one trick pony at this stage of his career. A thrower...just like Broderson was early in his career.

Again....you're trolling, and not very well.

Didn't Brands major him last year?
Yes. It was another bonehead move by Dresser.

Broderson got benched because Dresser wanted to look like a genius and throw a true freshman against a veteran in Carver.
Another truly WTF moment for Orangeman.

I'm starting to wonder if Dresser moves anyone around for this dual. I don't see any real advantage for them in doing so, but I remember the triple bump up he pulled last year or the year before. Maybe a flip of Echemendia and Swiderski at 41 and 49? That might give them a chance a bonus at 49 vs. maybe splitting decisions, but I don't know if that pans out, and Real is maybe as likely to bonus Swiderski as Ech is to bonus VV.

The longer I type, the less this makes any sense, but I'm too far in to delete now. Just had the thought that their lineup might not look exactly like last Sunday's dual. Seems like there have been last minute shakeups in years past, but who knows.

Sorry but ISU win still has an * tied to it.
why?

guys on both teams did a thing that had an established punishment. they got caught and now they're punished.

both teams are in this position entirely by their own actions... just like every other year

Some strikes and gutters, ups and downs today against Oregon State, but on to the next one. ISU has dropped 17 straight duals to Iowa, last winning in 2004. This could be their best chance in years to knock out the Hawks, which would obviously piss us all off a great deal.

Rankings per Intermat.

#8 Iowa vs. # 10 Iowa State

125: #11 Ayala vs. #17 Kysen Terukina. Terukina majored Eric #6 Barnett today, which was surprising, and Drake looked off this afternoon. I'm gonna say today's loss motivates Drake to bounce back and win by decision. Hawks 3-0.

133: #9 Teske vs. #18 Evan Frost. I like Teske by a comfortable decision. Hawks 6-0.

141: #1 Woods vs. #15 (at 149) Anthony Echemendia. I think Real is able to get to his legs and maybe a turn. Real by decision. Hawks 9-0.

149: # 9 VV vs. Casey Swiderski (NR by Intermat, Flo has him at #13). Swid beat #14 Zargo pretty handily today and can be hard to score on. VV needs to clean up his finishes to win this one. I'm going with Swid in a close decision. Hawks 9-3.

157: #2 Franek vs. #19 Cody Chittum. Hilton could be salty in this one after Chittum decommitted from Iowa. I think Franek controls this match as a savvy veteran, wins by decision. Hawks 12-3.

165: #5 Caliendo vs. #2 David Carr. Carr is just on a different tier, wins by decision. Hawks 12-6.

174: NR Arnold vs. #22 MJ Gaitan. Assuming Gabe goes again, I like him to control this match from neutral and push to get the major. Hawks 16-6.

184: #29 Stafford vs. #5 Will Feldkamp. Will need something big to pull this match out. Feldkamp by major, Hawks 16-10.

197: #23 Glazier vs. #25 Julien Broderson. This will be a big one. Think Glazier gets a TD late to seal it in a gritty decision. Hawks 19-10.

Heavy: NR Hill vs. #7 Yonger Bastida. Mismatch here, but I'm gonna say Hill is able to keep it to a major. Wouldn't matter for the dual if the previous go as above. Hawks win 19-14.

Not much room for error, and we almost have to have wins at 25, 33, 74, and 97. I will not be going, as I can't stand that stinking place and its fans.
Not sure I totally agree with this, but I like it and if we are leading 19-10 heading in to HWT, I like Brands to pull the forfeit out of his pocket in the last match, just to deny the Clones from ending the dual with a victory on the mat. Double insult to a sold out Hilton.

Hawkeye here. I think there's a chance Iowa State could smoke the Hawks.
There’s a path to this for sure. There’s some toss ups and I can see the hawks losing and that’d bust the dual wide open. Sickens me to even think it.

This year's version of ISU wrestling is without question Dresser's best team in 7 years.

If they start the dual at 125, and somehow both Ayala and Teske lose, there is that potential.
Because after that, Woods and Gabe are the only clear favs. I don't know that Franek is a heavy fav over Chiitum?
Should ISU win 7 bouts, I would have to say Iowa got "smoked".

Yep. And luckily this is broadcast on ESPN so the whole country will see.

I still want to puke seeing Chittum in a freaking ISU singlet. I really, REALLY hope TB knew what he is doing there.......
I mean, Chittum never signed....that's a flag in and itself.

Does Dressuh usually like to draw starting weight? Would be interesting if he chooses to. Looking at matches and Ayala's last performance. they could be thinking he has a weight isue or is under the weather?

Starting at 125 also leaves them as a heavy favorite at the end, so could be thinking that too. Have big gun going in match 10 and the dual on the line could leave them in good position. I guess the other end is match could already be locked up for the HAWKS!!!

If I am Brands I guess I would want to start at 125. Worst case is if we loose, we are still favorites next 2 weights and good shots in 2 more after that also. Win the first 5 weights, and match is all but over.

If they do draw starting weight, where would you want to be for each team? I like any of the lower weights for IOWA, from 125-157 with maybe 133 being my choice. Teske wrestles as he should and wins/gets major, then woods with a major or tech, gives us good momentum into some swing matches and takes some pressure off of Ayala.

Not sure where they would want to start? Guessing from 165 up? Maybe at 174 to put the pressure on Arnold? Obviously the biggest match is 165 and could want to go there to put best wrestler on mat and possible get a big win and crowd going?

Heavy also might be best for them as they are big favorites to win bonus here and get the crowd going leading to a big match at 125.

I would bring BIG BEN with the team even if it was just to weigh in and put something for them to worry about in their lil heads!!!

I thought Drake looked pretty sucked down on Sunday.
You could see it in his face and I don't ever remember him looking that way before.
And then he wrestled that way also.
Hopefully this week's cut is a little smoother for him.

Maybe some early season weight management issues, I think Ayala is a lot better than he showed there. I sure hope so.

Going to be a great dual to be honest. Lots of toss ups and surely some unexpected results for both teams. I think they split 5 each and bonus will decide the winner. That is assuming Gabe goes at 174. I see ISU as the favorite, but I wouldn't count the Hawks out just yet.

20-16......You gave the good guys 3 for Carrs win. Or, maybe it is an omen for Cali.

ISU lost a Big 12 champ in it too. Hawks upgraded big time at 157 and by a good margin at 165.

Iowa would be favored if they landed Truax and Nagao, but they didn't. Hawks beat Minnesota except for a shitty call on CDJ's punt return, but they didn't.

Your team is your team.

My biggest point is TNT had plenty of time to overhaul the roster and didn't get it done. If ISU gets a win Sunday, and I think it's going to be a nailbiter just like last year, it falls at TNT's feet because Iowa has plenty to sell with tradition, facilities and a boatload of NIL money that they didn't need to be in this place.
Is there ever a conversation that a PSU dipsh** doesn't make it about them? Ever?

Ayala will win.

I may be in the minority, but Caliendo will not allow bonus points.

Feldkamp is overrated. Avoid his double overlooks and fireman’s and you’re in the match. Plan to catch him in those and you get the fall. Not saying Swafford will do that, but he can certainly avoid bonus points.

ISU fans are going to be pretty quiet after this one.

I saw a picture of him before the meet and he was the definition of sucked in. His face looked like a corpse.

Brands is going to have to have them come in with a nothing to lose underdog mentality because they are dogs in this one.
Sanderson and Heskett were parts of some pretty good ISU teams and neither ever experienced an ISU dual win vs Iowa.

I'm hopeful David Carr can say the same come Sunday evening.

Any chance they start Naakt at 184 and bump Feldman up to 197?
Dresser's history of pulling stunts like that ain't too good.

So, yeah, he might do it.

Kevin's best squad vs one of Iowa's weakest this year.

A lot on the line for Orange.

125- got to go with a toss up here based on Ayala today.

133- Teske is favored, could possibly get a major.

141- Real should win, needs to make the top game work for bonus.

149- Swiderski has to be favored based on what VV has shown me.

157- Franek needs to pull this one out. Pretty even match.

165- Carr obviously favored, bonus is a possibility.

174- Gabe is the only guy available who could win and we need it. Gaitan like to throw junk.

184- Feldkamp is a good sized favorite.

197- Toss up match we have to win.

285- ISU big favorites, bonus a possibility.
Ayala win, 3-0
Teske major, 7-0
Woods major, 11-0
Swid win, 11-3
Franek win 14-3
Carr win 14-6
Gabe win - 17-6
Feldkamp win - 17-9
Broderson win - 17-12
Bastida major - 17-16 good guys.

I hope you're right, because I bet my Cyclone friend $200 saying just that. Last week took some of the confidence I had but a lot of you guys made good points about Cali making the adjustment to the funk and showing his attack rate and now I can see the positives. I think MC matches up decently here and {covers head from thrown objects} like our guy a lot.
