*****IOWA vs BYU Game Thread*****

Been playing cards, and watching on tiny screen on phone. Are we playing that good a defense or are this missing wide open looks?

Hell their best girl is 1-9?

Umm, they're just not good. They're missing a lot and they have like 20 turnovers. Iowa also has 20 turnovers but are shooting a lot better.

Guyton was awesome. Her shot is money when she has a chance to setup.

The offense flowed better when she was in there even though she had 6 turnovers (at least 2 were ill-advised drives into the lane for a travel. That will come with more experience i would think.

25-19 half

Without Lucy, we are a bottom Big Ten team
Iowa wasn't nearly as good last year without Caitlin either. Sometimes a great player is the nucleus around which everything else moves.

I thinks that a series like this, in Cancun ... already likely has the players a little distracted. When you add to the mix that we're having to lean so heavily upon young players ... we're showing our age-level in the last two games.

Fortunately, winning ugly is still a hell of a lot better than losing.

Hopefully the ladies learn and improve from the experience.

I hate that Lucy got hurt, but these two games will pay dividends down the road. Guyton had a chance to get experience she’d have not received if Lucy was playing. Syd is looking much better. Three point shooting was good tonight. Considering the number of freshmen playing and veterans with expectations placed on them that they have never felt before, I’m ecstatic with the wins in Cancun. 8-0 baby.

Was a bit distracted, but excited to see Guyton gaining confidence and hitting shots.

Really, should say that for everyone hitting 3s in that second half. That helps those little runs become big ones, and breaks the other team a little bit.

Also excited to see Stuelke hitting that contested jump shot---as well as showing some more of her improved skill handling the ball. She made good decisions all game.

Ava Heiden with the dribble spin-move was pretty awesome. I don't remember what the result of that was, but i was wide-eyed when she did that. If that sort of dexterity is in her 6'4 bag, she hasn't even dented into her potential.

Great win!
Get well soon, LucyO

And Affolter got her feet back a little, O'Grady continued to shine, Heiden played some more. Only negative might be Stremlow started to doubt her ability to bring the ball up.
With Guyton back I see minutes dropping for Stremlow she hustles but not great handles and not an offensive threat.

Kinda how I feel about things too.

I thought that Syd's stat-line showed the type of versatile contributor that we need her to be ... got the rebounds, distributed well, got steals ... in other words, exactly what we needed. We need here to keep on building off of that.

Having the young'uns keeps on getting that time ... you gotta hope that ends up reaping developmental rewards. Really impressed with the minutes we were getting from Guyton. I know that folks were hyping her a little bit ... and we hadn't previously seen her play (earlier in the season). What we're seeing now already is lending some credibility to those positives that other posters had mentioned about her (largely relating to how high Jan and Co were on Guyton).

When you're a young player and you're thrust into a position where your team needs you to produce ... AND you still produce. That's a good deal ... that's pretty impressive. Hopefully she can continue to build off of this experience.

I'm also hoping that Stremlow and Mallegni continue to build confidence and grow too.

I too am surprised at Guyton's offensive contribution so far.
BUT, she really has been sloppy with the ball these 3 games she's played. I know she is still super rusty coming off her injury,
but her top responsibility as a PG is to protect (and distribute) the ball. Hopefully she'll adjust to D1 WBB defenses quickly.

There was a play where Guyton had a window to pop a 3.. hesitated and threw a pass that was turned over for an easy layup.
Next time she had a sliver of a window she popped it and nailed it.

35 on BYU was dangerous.. took out Heiden’s knees on a box out that was ignored. There’s another where she tries to yank out Heiden’s arm on another box out.

Looked her up 1 point per game this year.. 2 points and 4 points her fresh and soph years at Baylor.. 3.5 last year at Arkansas St.

She was the 58th ranked recruit in the country in 2021. Originally signed with Marquette and never played. Signed with Baylor after Mulkey left. She was a little big coming out of high school, but she has ballooned since.. watching last night no clue how she got a “P5/4” or whatever it is offer to come to BYU.

Guyton is improving every minute on the court. She has probably proved to Jan that she is ready to contribute - now. Aallyah is much a much better shooter than I was expecting.

In the last 2 games, Guyton is 5-6 (83%) from three.

In yesterday's 68-48 win over BYU, here were her stats:

24 minutes (of 40 possible)

3-3 (100%) from 3
1-3 (33%) from 2
......................................
4-6 (67%) Overall shooting

0-0 FTs

11 Points
4 Defensive Rebounds
2 Assists

She had 5 of Iowa's 23 (yikes!) turnovers, however.

Growing pains ;)

A few things here. We picked up the number 1 pt guard available in the portal because we lost the number 1 pt guard of all time at Iowa, possibly ever. That pt guard has been killing it and got injured. We were then forced to play a pt guard that we weren’t sure was even going to see the court because of a serious knee injury. We are a team of mostly complimentary players besides probably Hannah, and our backup pt guard forced to take charge and we win by 20. Oh, and she’s a Freshman! Of course she made a few mistakes. She also played really well for the most part. This was actually great for Iowa in the long run. Guyton gets playing time and confidence and Olson will be back and nothing serious.
