Iowa (W) to participate in NYC Champions Classic

I am actually already planning to be in NYC this weekend for a show the night before. Sign me up!!

So, who do you predict our starting 5 will be and are any of them (other than 2) getting any significant playing time at all this year??

Should be good! Nothing to lose next year, and all sorts of upside if they manage an early win against any of these teams.

There's been some chat about this on the 2023-2024 thread. There are some different theories. Right now the prevailing concern is what will happen at PG if Clark graduates, since our heir apparent at the 1 just tore her ACL. She is now unlikely to get any minutes next year IMO. I don't see how she will be able to learn the system if she is rehabbing all summer and into fall.

That leaves us with Kennise Johnson Etienne (sophomore) or the possibility of shifting someone out of a preferred position to the PG -- most likely Taylor McCabe or perhaps even Affolter, who is a decent passer. The ideal rotation IMO, without CC, would be:
  • PG: KJE
  • SG: McCabe / Feuerbach
  • SF: Affolter / Gyamfi / Mallegni
  • PF: Stuelke / Gyamfi
  • C: O'Grady / Heiden / Goodman
Or another scenario would be
  • PG: KJE
  • SG: McCabe
  • SF: Feuerbach / Gyamfi / Mallegni
  • PF: Affolter / Gyamfi
  • C: Stuelke / O'Grady /Heiden
The second (small) line up is not ideal but I wouldn't be surprised if the season starts that way, while transitioning to the first predicated upon Heiden being able to be at least as or more productive than O'Grady/Goodman. I don't think this is a tall task, but no freshman should be expected to play like an upperclasswoman. That said, Heiden clearly has the highest likelihood of being an impact player of the 5 signees.

There's a fair bit of disagreement all around tho:
  • Some don't think Gyamfi or KJE will be up to the task of earning minutes, which is fair at this point. I think Gyamfi has more upside than we have seen though. I'm not sure KJE will be "ready" (and she is very short at 5'4) just yet, but if the alternative is McCabe, I have a hard time seeing Bluder not rolling with KJE. She clearly isn't an all american in the making but she might just be what we have. She is athletic and fierce if nothing else. She isn't afraid to slash. I'm hopeful she could surprise us...but the onus is on her to prove it of course. Fair to say I'm pretty concerned about PG overall.
  • There's also a lot of discourse on the freshmen outside Guyton and Heiden, who far and away had the easiest task of earnin minutes due to positional need and their talent level. The next most talented is clearly Mallegni. She has a lot of Warnock in her and can likely play the SF/PF in Bluder's system, but Bluder has said she likes freshman to play either the 2/3 or 4/5 so as not to overwhelm them. So it's unlikely she will get minutes at both positions as a freshman. Since she's only ever played as a guard, I think Bluder would want her at the 2/3 her first year. But the 2/3 is where we have the biggest logjam. But Mallegni is clearly talented (and tall) as evidenced by her offer list (Ohio State, Duke, to name a couple).
  • There's some disagreement on whether Taylor Stremlow will breakthrough. She is a knockdown shooter who plays good defense. She is also a good passer. She may actually be able to earn some PG minutes tbh....but her offer list is not overly impressive and she has trended down over the last year. She is barely a Top 100 recruit anymore according to ESPN (though Prospects Nation has her at 60-something -- which is where they had Sydney Affolter as well....definitely not a bad thing, but Affolter didn't get minutes her freshman year). Again, she seems like an ideal 2 but we have a logjam there.
  • We have another freshman G in Callie Levin but I haven't seen anyone make a case as to why she is likely to get minutes. She is also the lowest profile of all the recruits.

Unfortunately this will be going head-to-head against the Big10 Championship game.

Not sure it's a great idea to compete against the 2nd most popular sporting event that weekend, but what do I know.

Iowa fans won’t have a reason to watch that game 😎

Nope, and Buekers may not be at UConn either. She may hit the draft. She's in the same class as Clark.....
Unless they have another unsatisfying run in the NCAA tournament, I have no idea why Beuckers wouldn't go pro, especially after the injuries she's dealt with.

If I'm Iowa though, I'd be leery af about their prospects regarding this event.

If the roster turns the wrong way and they do typical "nobody wants to play for white Iowa" things with the transfer portal, then they're gonna get their f***ing asses beat and badly next year.
