Iowa WBB 2025 Recruiting Thread

Agree, It doesn’t seem to be a problem for S.Carolina,UConn,USC, etc.
Before this year, USC last made the Sweet Sixteen in 1994. They've only landed big recruits in the past couple years.

Players that go to South Carolina or UConn can basically guarantee that they will go to a Final Four at some point in their college careers. They also send a disproportionate amount of players to the W. That's how they sell top recruits on taking lesser roles for a year or two.

If Iowa can land some of the recruits they seem to have a solid shot at perhaps they can mimic those top programs in regard to final fours and sending players to the WNBA. Jan said it herself, Why not chase greatness.

Absolutely. That's the goal. Very tough to achieve it, but adding Skinner, Spieser, etc. would go a long way. So would getting a couple more players drafted in the next couple years. I think Stuelke is probably a lock. Olsen and/or Affolter have potential.

This is the challenge Jan faces — and which she must embrace IMO. Her pitch should be that she knows how to get back to the NC game — Iowa can clearly develop athletes at every position and has a solid system that works. But to go all the way, we need depth. That’s very much the truth. Look at UCLA. They have a Final Four caliber roster but when their center was out for a few games, they completely collapsed. We need more than one good C and we need more than one good PG.

IOW, Jan needs to continue to raise both our ceiling and our floor. I think of the 3 recruits for 2025, Skinner does the most to improve both of those metrics. In contrast, Hays would raise our floor more significantly than our ceiling (since we already have a solid C with a comparable skillset), while Speiser would raise our ceiling more than our floor (since I don’t think we have anyone else with her skillset).

It’s clearly a tough balance. Kids don’t wanna ride pine. But if they want to be a national champs, they need to believe in the importance of depth. However, Iowa could perhaps be in a great position to make this case, since we have such a low outbound transfer rate. Athletes knows they matter at Iowa, no matter their minutes.

I've heard for a while now it was K-State as the favorite, BUT that same intel indicated Iowa was NOT in the final few. So, if Iowa now appears in the final 2, that could bode well for the Hawks. The visit with Skinner in Utah should be a home visit with Jan, Raina and other(s).
If based on previous info, obviously K State would still be in the drivers seat. They have made up some ground. I still think Iowa likely offers her a better opportunity, but K State is becoming a solid program. If by chance you can sway her to come, I think it gives Jan a lot of momentum for the 2026 draft class, especially if the team does respectably well.

All she has to do is look at the two coaches and their courtside demeaner. Ones an asshole and one's going to be a good coach.

Well @GunnerHawk not to get your hopes up more, but a few other talking points on Skinner:

The coaches visiting her clearly shows Iowa is still in the race. I think it's notable, then, that she hasn't publicly taken a visit to any other school since she came to Iowa for the Ohio State game. That's far different than Hays who has taken a ton of visits. Thus far, Skinner has only publicized visits to: Iowa, Utah, Utah State, North Carolina, and Arizona.

Arizona- Jada Williams (a PG and #21 in the class of 2023) is only a sophomore at Arizona and would overlap with Skinner for two seasons. They also added a top 100 PG in the class of 2024 (Lauryn Swann).

North Carolina- Not quite as glaring as Arizona, but Reniya Kelly was #30 in the 2023 class as a PG and would overlap with Skinner for two seasons. They also added a top 100 PG in the class of 2024 (Lanie Grant).

Utah- Just added a 2025 PG (Leonna Snead, #26 in the class) last month.

Utah State- I think everyone would be shocked if she went to a Mountain West school.

Of the major players, Iowa is the only school with a glaring opening at PG after this season without a clear answer to that need either on roster (I'm not counting Guyton because of the injury) or already part of the 2025 class.
Cut it out BR5. I have felt Skinner might be our best shot but now we make Speiser's final two. Hoping for at least one, two would be awesome. Add them to Deal and Houston, fingers crossed.

I have to believe that NIL is an important consideration for a highly recruited athlete in all major sports, men and women. It may not be the top consideration - it depends on the person - but it’s part of the package now.

In the "lesser" sports, this may be the best/only opportunity for incredibly skilled, but not Olympic-medal caliber, athletes to cash in. They still have to find a school with fans willing to finance them.

Skinner visited UCLA this weekend. Sienna Betts posted a photo with her, dressed in a UCLA uninform. Skinner shared it to her story with the comment “Fun Weekend!”

Betts is definitely not a fan of Iowa btw — I remember when Skinner posted about her Iowa visit with the caption “Go Hawkeyes?” and Betts replied “No.” Wasn’t gonna bring it up, but it seems germane now. Also a good reminder of the difficulties the program faces. I’ve never seen an athlete make a comment like that on another athlete’s post before.

Anyone that posts disdain about a program that is not germane to them, deserves ridicule of the highest obtuse extent. Getting back to my rambling about Betts and our "recruiting" her. I've followed her decent into hell and she's a self absorbed narcissist that needed the lights of LA to push her visibility. That is diametrically opposed to what the Hawks are trying to push.

Just to clarify, Sienna is a class of 2025 high school senior....Lauren has been at UCLA (Sienna is a commit).

The Betts family has never given Iowa the time of day, so they don't know anything about the program except what they've heard second hand. I understand that in this day and age perceptions=facts, but if the Skinner family is grounded they'll take any of those comments with a grain of salt.

All right, it's settled. Iowa must punk UCLA by 30 points when they play this season. Welcome to the Big Ten!

That's true and thanks for the input. I was actually referencing the "recruiting" when Lauren was transferring. After witnessing that, I realized we had no chance with her sister. But this seems to be case with a lot of individuals that have a certain mindset, It actually breeds the us against them mentality. And more specifically the UConn mindset, which I despise, and not the South Carolina, which I respect.

Was the Betts transfer recruiting real or was it just wishful thinking on our part? Did we get a visit?

Just like most everything when you have a top team, the kindling was burning and overtures are made, though that was quickly squashed when you realize an individual have their mind set on a specific program and destination.

I recall reading NIL came into play also. Sounds like little sis is getting a nice package also.

Guyton is also Brazilian. I wonder if there's a connection.

We really need another big, I've seen multiple people say she is highly underrated. Would be a great add IMHO.

Also, what is it about UNC? It seems every recruit I read about in 2025 has them as a finalist. Insane considering their lack of achievements -- not to mention the recent outbound transfer of their star player.

Interestingly, our 4 remaining targets for 2025 each are a different position: PG, W, F, C....so not a lot of competition between them. Hopeful we can land just one...

She has some really nice skills, 6-3, Can shoot the 3, Can finish in traffic with either hand, Decent handles for a big and runs the court well.

I agree that landing one of the remaining targets would be great, If they could somehow get 2 it would make the 25 class stellar.

FWIW - Foreign players like Alves (sometimes Fernandes or Fernandes Alves) frequently have highly variable recruiting rankings, even after arrival in the US during their high school careers. ASGR, one of the 4 recruiting rankings that has been around for a good while (the others are Hoopgurlz, Prospects Nation & Blue Star), ranks her #21 in the 2025 class. HoopGurlz has her at # 64, while she is unranked/yet to be evaluated by the others.

Earlier tonight Abby posted a pic from a plane that she was going to see some “big time basketball” — and it looked like she was flying over mountains.

Then 40 minutes ago (11 pm ET my time or so), she posted a pic of her dinner at sunset. Looks like California (would be 8pm there) but could be anywhere on the west coast. Thoughts?

It’s her story, not a regular post, so they will disappear / can’t be linked (I tried to copy the URLs but it was just showing the Login page).
