When his pocket broke down on third-and-goal from just outside the 10-yard line late in the third quarter of Thursday's preseason finale against the Buffalo Bills, Jake Rudock did the one thing that's come to define his game this preseason: He extended the play with his legs.

Rudock leaked out of the pocket to his right, but rather than run for the goal line, as some anxious young quarterbacks might, the Detroit Lions' rookie sprinted towards the sideline with his head up and his eyes downfield.

He saw slot receiver Jace Billingsley work his way towards the end zone, and with Bills cornerback Sterling Moore trailing in coverage, Rudock lofted a soft pass over Moore's shoulder that Billingsley hauled in one-handed for a touchdown.

"Jake’s a great playmaker," Billingsley said. "He scrambled and I got behind my defender, he made a great pass and it worked out."

If Jake has a career in the nfl it's obvious our coaches were a big part of the problem with him.
Not obvious at all. What's obvious is that he was a good QB here and would have had a good senior year at Iowa, and a chance to be an NFL free agent.

It might prove that the coaches were not idiots to start him for 2 years. I wish him well in the NFL.

Rudock at Michigan was not a fundamentally different quarterback than he was at Iowa. He did have more talented options to throw the ball to at Michigan.

Jake was light years away from being and nfl qb while at iowa and that wasn't gonna change his senior year.
I don't agree with that. He certainly was up and down, but his numbers weren't bad in total. His junior year was better than Stanzi's junior year statistically, as well as Tate's magical sophomore year. It wasn't off the charts good, but he was a solid QB. I'm certainly glad Beathard played last year obviously, but I don't know that I would assume Rudock wouldn't have improved from the prior year if he would have played.

I point people to the 2014 ISU game for proof. He was simply scared to be in the pocket. No deep threat, but then again this was compounded by the fact that the wrong guy was starting at the RB position.

It is possible that having better RBs on the field would have made a positive difference for Rudock. Weisman (loved the guy, but...) wasn't the answer even though he was a punishing back at times. It helped to have more athletic guys out there keeping the defense honest.

Quickly please - your college playing experience, coaching exerience and current employment? Gosh, and your name? This would add credibility to your claims. Crickets...that's what I thought!

Do you think he was an NFL caliber QB while at Iowa?

Irrelevant what I, you or the other idiot posters think. WE know 1% of the football the Hawkeye staff knows and 0% of what happens daily within the program. I do know this - people in the NFL who Coach, love and respect the hell out of KF and staff. And I do know their qualifications and NAMES!

While he was at Iowa, he was a Big Ten caliber QB.

Also while he was at Iowa, 98% of Iowa message board posters snorted time and again saying "I guarantee you one thing, he doesn't have the arm to get a sniff of the NFL."

Here we are, and Jake Rudock may open his rookie season on the Lions roster. His arm must've improved a HUGE amount in one year.

Not Freyvet, but here are my $0.02. I think that Jake has always had an NFL caliber brain. He processes things quickly and makes smart decisions. I did not think that he had an NFL arm at Iowa, and I am still not sure that he has an NFL arm.

I think that he was well-schooled in a pro-style offense at Iowa that gave him a fair amount of responsibility at the line of scrimmage. I think that the instruction that he got at Iowa was fundamentally sound.

I think that his brain and his comfort in a pro-style offense are what give him the chance to stick in the NFL.

I think that there was an aspect of Iowa's offense under Greg Davis that Jake Rudock was not well-equipped to run, or that did not play well to his talents. Greg Davis likes to throw quick outs to WRs, including the zero yard "smoke" routes, and Rudock did not get the ball out there quick enough (arm strength). I think that you can fault Greg Davis for not adjusting his play-calling to eliminate the routes Rudock did not throw well. But that is different than questioning whether he received good instruction at Iowa.

It should be noted that, while he had a good senior year, he was not invited to the NFL draft. So there were still plenty of people out there who were still questioning whether he had an NFL arm.

Jim Harbaugh is responsible for Jake's improvement. He's a damn good QB coach and Jake has tools, namely he's a really bright kid.

Maybe, just maybe Jake is a very good QB and would have helped them win many games last year but CJ is just better in some areas proved that by leading the team to 12-0. Maybe?

JR is an outstanding young man anyone would like to have as a friend, son, brother, etc. It must have been difficult for the coaches and the two players to have two capable QBs at the same time. Obviously both wanted to play, but you can't play two QBs at the same time. It seems to be working well for both players. Good luck to JR in the NFL and certainly best wishes to CJ in his last year at Iowa. Let's repeat the first 12 games just like last year and go from there. Go Hawks.

Waiting for your back peddling

Got sand in the vagina? CJ didn't need coached up, he has the tools and savvy. He's a winner/gammer. Coaches are probably holding him back a too much actually. KF is a hell of a guy and we are lucky to have him at iowa but that does not mean he doesn't have some faults.

You didn't answer my simple questions I asked you???

What a moronic post. We get it, you don't like KF or GD. Why don't you enlighten us with your national championship caliber coaching staff. It still amazes me that we have so many fans that hate KF so much, they can't even see we had two nfl caliber QBs on our team! I hope Jake sticks in the league for a long time because he's a smart kid and he earned it. Sometimes it's really hard to make the right decision, especially when you have so much respect for the player you're replacing, which Is the case with JR. KF made the hard decision and gets no credit from the haters. I guess haters just gonna hate.

To the contrary, I like KF very much and think he is a class act. But to some of you blind, ignorant, coolaid drinkers he has been known to make a mistake or two. He's human, duh.

Not blind, ignorant or a coolaid drinker. Of course KF makes mistakes, he's a human. Just don't know how starting an experienced third year QB over an inexperienced second year QB can be considered a mistake, especially after JR has gone on to have a successful collegiate career and has a chance to stick in the league. In my mind you're the blind and ignorant one, but I don't expect you to admit that anytime soon. Maybe when you grow up a little.

He was a very good QB. He would have gone down as one of the winningest QBs in hawkeye history had a special QB(CJB) not been on campus. Our coaches were correct in that we had 2 really good QBs.
