JoBo--the best freshman Iowa PG Ever? OR since Ronnie Lester (40 years ago!)???

U CALLED IT!!!

>160 ASTs, >10ppg, >80 3s, and >40% 3PT%

He's not Lonzo Ball (>250 ASTs, 55% FG%), but hardly any players are that good. Every other Bohannon stat lines up pretty darn well with one of the best freshman PGs (Ball) in college BB.

Bohannon's stat line matches up pretty well with another 'short white guard' of yesteryear....John Stockton's sophomore stat line at Gonzaga. We all know how badly THAT guy sucked as an NBA guard:eek:...('course....Stockton was a 50-58% shooter, so Bohannon has a ways to go with that)

JoBo is doing something only 2 other freshman have done in the history of college basketball. Crazy!

Per @Iowahoops (Iowa Basketball ) and Matt Benson (‏@mbenson6):

Iowa players with 70+ three-pointers & 100+ assists in a season all-time:
Bohannon (2016-17) FRESHMAN YEAR
Horner (2004-05 & 2005-06) JUNIOR and SENIOR YEARS

Per @Iowahoops:
Freshman Jordan Bohannon is the first Hawkeye to post back-to-back double-doubles in points/assists since B.J. Armstrong in 1989 (28 years ago). He had 24/10 vs IU on March 9 and 19/11 vs South Dakota on March 15.

@IowaHoops on March 16, 2017
Jordan Bohannon is one of only three freshmen nationally over the last 25 years to register 160+ assists and 80+ 3-pointers

Lots of youngsters on here. :). Ronnie Lester is the best freshman point guard at Iowa in my time as a fan, and it's not close. I've seen them all. Don't know all his stats, but Lester averaged 13.4 ppg as a freshman and controlled games. He is also the best point guard I've seen at Iowa until his injury. Heck of a player.

No argument on Lester, but it seems like forever since I've seen Iowa take a late three and I actually expected it would go in. J Bo far exceeded all our expectations and it amazes me that so many delight in bashing his shortcomings and discount his accomplishments. I like his guts and he is fun to watch.

This group of freshman is willing to take clutch shots and have delivered solid results.

I look forward to the future and want to thank the entire team for a fun watch for Hawkeye fans. GO HAWKS.

So... Should Hayden Fry be given a little thumbs up for helping to recruit him by recruiting his father Gordy many years back to be a QB on the Hawks' FB team?

Ronnie was great! Still remember having him a class with him in my days there at Iowa and how he would almost always come to class with his shoe laces untied! :) Though Krafcisin had the dorm room right across the hall from me in those days too as someone I knew more then.

So, JoBo is the best in at least the last 37 years??

Keep in mind that Ronnie played in the days before the 3 point play was brought to college ball. Had JoBo been playing in those days instead, he wouldn't have the 3 point stats he has today as there wouldn't have been any 3 point shots for him then. Ronnie arguably was probably the best point guard playing for Iowa. Had he not been injured in the 1980 season and in the Louisville game in the final four, I think they would have won it all then in 1980. Iowa was playing Louisville pretty even up until the point he went out of the game then. I was there for that game!

He is great on offense and a great floor leader. The problem is his defense. That point guard from TCU went around him all night.

So who was the last guy on the Hawks to have 3 double doubles on asst and points ? 25 and 13 pretty good

Nobody. BJ had 2 in a row.

Per @Iowahoops after the South Dakota game:
Freshman Jordan Bohannon is the first Hawkeye to post back-to-back double-doubles in points/assists since B.J. Armstrong in 1989 (28 years ago). He had 24/10 vs IU on March 9 and 19/11 vs South Dakota on March 15.

He looks very Bobby-Hurley-like in how he runs the court.

His numbers are very much in line with Hurley in his freshman year as well. Hurley was always a fearless shooter, too.
In some areas you can make some comparisons, but Jordan scored more points in less games, hit 89 threes compared to Hurley's 41, and short a mucher higher Ft percentage and better shooting percentages for 3's and FG's. Oh, and Jordan had half as many t/o's. Where Hurley excelled was that he had more assists and a good part of that can be attributed to the players around them. North Carolina had better players handling those passes and finishing better. Hurley never hit as many 3's in a season in his career as Jordan made in his Freshman year. He came close in his senior year when he hit 88.

Best freshman point I've seen since Ronnie. Some really impressive passing these past few games. Just needs to sharpen his defense, which I think he can.

i think he is going to be hitting clutch shots for the next 3 years.

Unless he leaves early for the NBA, that is ;)

Bo certainly finished the season strong; last three games averaged 22.7 pts and 10.6 assists. Defense improved as did his ability to get inside.

Is there anything about the kid that doesn't say gym rat? A great fit for Iowa and we are lucky to have him.

* After thumbing thru hundreds of box scores, it looks like Bohannon is the 1st Hawkeye to post 3 straight double-doubles with points-assists.

* Jordan (175) is now Iowa's single-season assists leader for a freshman (140 by Jeff Horner in 2003),

Jordan Bohannon is one of only three freshmen nationally over the last 25 years to register 160+ assists and 80+ 3-pointers. JoBo ended his freshman season with 175/89. The other two? D'Angelo Russell (Ohio State, 175/95, 2014-15) and Stephon Marbury (Georgia Tech, 161/88, 1995-96).

Jordan has been a great freshman player and a joy to watch much of the time. If he can add 15 lbs. and learn to play much better defense and make better passing decisions thus reducing his turnovers he will be outstanding. I think he will work hard to improve. I'm also assuming his shooting percentages (free throws and field goals) will improve each year.
He will likely become one of Iowa's ALL TIME GREATS.

He'd be better off working on lateral quickness and strength, than weight. That means hitting the weights, for sure, but not necessarily adding pounds.

didnt read every post on this thread...and not really into comparing one Iowa PG to another...suffice to say we've had some really good ones (Bohannon included) over the years who all brought something to the team. Some better at certain aspects of game then others but in the end..they were all good players.

comparing anyone to Ronnie Lester is a tough sell...#12 was the best player at any position that I have seen as a Hawkeye.

In the fall of 1976 ..I attended an exhibition game vs the Airliner...heard the name Lester but had not seen him in person until then. Lester didnt start..Wulfsberg did..when Lute brought in #12 (skinny little kid)..the ball was inbounded and this little shit shot up the floor like he was on fire. Looked at my brother..."wow that kid is fast"...anyone who had half a BB brain knew right then & there we had something really special.

JBo will leave his mark on Iowa BB history over the next 3 years...

Stats don't ALWAYS tell the tale. We don't know what Jordan's ceiling is yet. He may have hit it for all we know. Horner was a great point guard and if Jordan ends up as good as Horner, we are in for some very good teams. Mike Gesell led us to 3 NCAA's and an NIT final, was a fine defender and had a LOT of assists. Mike's achilles heel was his shooting.
Mike Gesell didn't "LEAD" us anywhere.

If arthroscopic knee surgery had been available in Lester's day, he'd have ended up an all-time NBA great. Magic Johnson was even reported to have stated the best guy he ever played against was 'Ronnie Lester with two good knees'....

Magic did say that about Ronnie..very true. In his prime (prior to the horrible injury) he was impossible to guard..and even after the injury (on one good knee) he was giving LVille fits in the Final 4 semifinal until they saw fit to end his Iowa career...

We've had some really good Points since Lester but none as good...will we ever?

Jbo has not played like a freshman, he's never been timid or held back, he's got more confidence and balls than the other 2 ever did. I like Mike and Jeff but Jbo is at a different level. It's just the evolution of basketball players imo.
I see Jordan as a better version or Horner. I think they play a lot alike. I went back to watch some old video of Horner and there are so many comparisons of this year Jbo and Horner towards the end of his career. Jordan has a much high ceiling as a shooter.

JoBo is often compared to Horner and Gesell. However, in the 10 categories I list below, comparing freshman years,

* JoBo leads in 7 of them.
* Horner leads in 2 of them
* Gesell leads in 1 of the categories.

On March 6, I added games played and minutes/game.

Kind of a JoBo land slide.

EFG%, btw, is effective FG %. This stat accounts for the fact that a 3 point FG is worth more than a 2 point FG.

JoBo's stats are updated thru the 2016-2017 season's final game (March 19 vs TCU).

Also, I could not find turnover stats on Horner so that was left out.

Thoughts?

Player..GP...Min...Pts..PPG..FG%..3pt..3pt%..FT%...Ast...Stl..Reb...EFG%
Horner. 31...35.4 . 255...8.2....332...41...277.....767....4.5...1.3...4.4......418
Gesell...34...25.1...295...8.7....403.. 33...317.....794....2.6...1.2...2.6......466
JoBo.....34...29.6...372.10.9....388...89...416.....855....5.1......9...2.2......535

Others, just for the heck of it:

Look at his family and you gotta think the sky is the limit. His brother Matt did an awesome interview on his podcast and talked about Jordan and the other brothers.

Actually, Gordy was a Bob Commings recruit as his last year was 1981.
