Joe T gone

well that sucks. my favorite Hawk by far. wish we'd recruit more players with his skill set.

i think very few players are going to be staying in the same place for all 4 years going forward.

I wish Joe T the best and hope that he finds success elsewhere.

I would like to think Fran will look to better the position through the portal, finding a PG that can score, get to the rim and distribute but in the end he probably won't...hope I am wrong

You could put together a highlight reel of Joe T's best 25 assists and JoBo's best assist in 6 years wouldn't crack the list. Difference between aggressiveness and passiveness.
I love Joe T and I agree at times he was very very exciting. I thought he was the x-factor last year and this year for this team because of his ability to stop the dribble-drive. But, in the end for exciting as he was, his positives did not outweigh his mistakes consistently.

I hate to see Joe T go as I appreciate everything that he gave the Iowa program. He played hard this year and did not complain when he lost the starting job. That being said, I hope that Bowen is a more complete point guard and that this will help open up more playing time for him next year.

These are all excellent points. And I agree the right move was made this season. However, I’m talking about Joe T’s entire Iowa career. I don’t believe he was ever given the opportunity to reach his full potential, and who knows what that could have been. In terms of his value to the team, it’s kind of a moot point, because Joe T is an average P5 talent. Could he have been more? We’ll never know.

In terms of what was more helpful—JBo sliding to pg or Perkins being inserted into the lineup to provide athleticism around the perimeter and a secondary scoring threat—is anyone’s guess. I agree JBo helped with floor spacing, but it seems like Perkins isn’t getting enough due for the change in fortunes of this team down the stretch.
As far as JBo and Perk, I think both are true. I think that Perkins' play was the biggest difference maker for this team in the last 14 games, but, JBo's reputation allowed it all to happen.

As far as JoeT goes, I think that the focus was always on the wrong player. It should have never been a question between JBo and JoeT, it should have been between JoeT and Perkins, and if he was still on the team it was between JBo and CJ. What Perkins provided was that he could handle the ball, get to the basket, and run the offense like a point guard should, and, he showed he could reliably shoot like a 2. Thus, him and JBo could swap playing the 1 and 2 whenever they wanted and whatever the matchup was. But Perkins is a much bigger, more physical, and better shooter than JoeT.

I wish JoeT would stay, I love his role off the bench. But I don't fault him for wanting to play more minutes either. I wish him all the luck in the world, he will always be a Hawkeye to me.

I liked the attitude, hustle, competitiveness, speed, toughness, and really all he brought to this team. I do think he had way to short a leash, and it wouldn't have changed next year. So good luck Joe. I've enjoyed watching Nunge, and I'll enjoy watching you to. Wherever you land, have fun, and thanks for being a Hawk.

I could see Connor moving back to PG like you said but you really need him at the 3 or 4 for depth. I don’t think Fran promises starting spots but I’m sure he can be honest with Joe about his chances of starting. Did you want Joe T playing 30 minutes? He’s good in bursts but not the guy you want playing big minutes.
No, what we really need from CMAC is for him to give up his free Covid year.

No alignment between Joe and the program. He wants to start and I understand that desire. The team was much better when he came off the bench and I hope he respects that. Wish him the best but he is not a P5 starting PG. Loved his effort and defense for sure. Good luck Joe!

A great perimeter defender who can beat people off the dribble. Give me a freakin break.
In all honesty how often did Joe actually "beat someone off the dribble" and actually end up scoring? He'd usually throw up some crazy ass shot up which sometimes went in, while he was falling awkwardly to the floor. He gave solid defensive effort, BUT also gambled to much for steals and left his team mates exposed. Often his minutes were limited because of untimely turnovers, and really poor decision making. He played like crap in both of our most recent NCAA losses as well. Sorry to see Joe leave, but I think we'll be fine with Ulis and Bowen. The bigger problem will be scoring from the perimeter with Jbo and Keegan leaving, and Joe would not have helped in that regard.

Joe is more of a P5 player than both Connor and Patrick.

"Fine with Ulis??"

Ulis can't score the basketball. He lacks confidence needed to be even an average player.

Yet he only scored one less point per game than Toussaint in four minutes less per game. The sad truth is that neither of them played particularly well last year, though Toussaint’s bright spots were substantially brighter than Ulis’. Ulis can easily give us next year what Toussaint did this year…

The problem is that we need more from our PG than either of them have provided, specifically on the offensive end

So much wrong here it hurts. Joe was great in pick and roll, not used nearly enough. If you noticed when Perkins started for joe, he was relegated to the same job. Dribble dribble dribble and was for the cross screen action. This led to jbo getting the ball late in the shot clock.
as free flowing as our transition game is our base offense is rather blah.

If you think Joe T was always out of control and had odd decision making, Pat must drive you bonkers.
Hmmm, you mean the only guy who kept us in the game against Richmond. I'd also be willing to bet that most people who know basketball would tell you that Pat has way more upside at this point then Joe does....I know, I know, but nepotism right......

Jees,,sorry to hurt you. The FACT is our offense got better when Joe went back to the bench. Believe or don't.

Bulldogs is always super emotional/irrational when he discusses Joe T. He was a nice piece of the puzzle, seemingly a hard working, great teammate. But some go way overboard when discussing his actual abilities. Hopefully Iowa can bring in a more well rounded player in the backcourt.

Thanks JoeT! Always gave great effort and was a really good teammate. Good luck, just don't transfer to another B1G team.

Adds a position to what Fran should be looking for in the Portal. I have high hopes for Bowen, but it would be a really good idea to have another experienced guard who can handle the ball, play defense, and shoot some.

Our offense isn't top 5 in the country solely off of transition O. Fran actually runs really good stuff, but you're right we do run a lot of off-ball screens rather than solely PnR stuff.
Fran benched Joe for 2 reasons: 1) Jordan was getting eaten alive by bigger 2 guard defenders and unable to find his rhythm shooting without being the primary ball handler. 2) The offense kept stalling because Joe would hesitate to make the crisp, ball reversal passes that Fran's offense is designed around. I went back and watched the Penn St game after the lineup switch was announced and I probably counted 5 or 6 times where the offense just stagnated because Joe was dribbling around the perimeter instead of reversing the ball.
I loved Joe as a Hawk, he was a great change of pace energy guy off the bench. We will absolutely miss his ball hawk defense on the digs and doubles to opposing Big men. I hope Ulis works on his jumper that I know is somewhere in there and that Bowen is ready to contribute on day 1.

JT was nice off the bench. Experienced player who “appeared”
to be in line to start at PG.

I was surprised he didn’t develop more. You need a PG who can shoot and his shot never came along. And, you need a PG who makes the players around him better.

Seemed like a good team mate so best of luck to him. This is the world of college athletics now … players coming and going…

What does any of that have to do with his general poor shot selection and the fact that he often looks like he is moving without a plan?

His defense when he was starting was overrated imo. Better off the bench. He makes the highlight steals, but he got abused off the dribble repeatdly in more than a few games.

It’s not like PM was taking the ball to the rim or getting offensive boards to score. He had “2” rebounds in 26 minutes. 1 defensive which means at 6’9” he pounded the glass for 1 offensive board. He was the recipient of kick out passes as he planted himself outside. As I recall the image I saw of him on D was him chasing his man towards the basket after getting torched.

I will miss Joe’s energy on the court. Which in the second half of the season was key in the Hawks improved D.

Good luck Joe T.

So your a B1G guard who would you rather have to defend Joe T or CMAC . On the opposite who would you rather play D against you - Joe T or CMAC? Patrick just needs to get to work and gain some weight/strength and be more aggressive. Then there's the crazy Jordan fall away shots we won't talk about. But honestly he is 22 yrs. old - I graduated college at that age. What is the upside here? There is a reason neither have even got a sniff when it come's to end of season awards - not even honorable mention. I have no doubt both are great guy's and want to win - but there is also no doubt they play more minutes than they should because Dad is the coach. If you have ever coached your own kid you would know the dilemma you face. Nobody would believe they're own kid is inferior to others.

Like Joe as a team member and person but there is no way I want him running point especially in down to the wire games. TO machine and can’t move the ball with a sense of purpose.
