Josh O./Ulis to the portal

I agree. Plus Fran has contacred a couple guards so was expecting Uhlis was leaving. I like Uhlis but think upgrading his position is necessary for us to be successful. Good luck to both players. I always thought Josh would get his conditioning and weight under control but after he said he was going to 3 years ago and never did I'm not surprised he didn't get much time on the floor. I think Riley could still be good and contribute. He runs the court well and is definitely a positive kid.
Ulis could beat his man at times and drive down the lane but instead of taking that last long stride or a jump stop and explode to the rim he would just turn around and look to pass outside and once in awhile he might make a nice dish.

I so wanted him to get over that hump and control games but alas.

I do hope he's successful wherever he lands. He just struggled to finish drives and is not a good shooter. Nice kid though.

I think it’s notable that both portal departures were announced at nearly the same time, followed by a quick statement from the university. It makes me think that this will be it as far a portal departures go. If the coaching staff thought more were to come, I think they might have waited on the statement.
I think the players and coaches/Fran had their post season sit down meetings and if Fran tells Ulis he just hasnt progressed and he has others who will start and he says something similar to JoshO and maybe another then it seems the portal transfer decisions would occur about the same time.

Points is not the end all stat, maybe Braun is a good defender??? He had his fair shre of blocked shots as he did have a 7 shot block game.
Ogundele led this IOWA team in defense metric, and we saw him do this against Eddy, Kofi and the best big guys he had the chance to play against.

but Fran won’t have him around next year and will be forced to go with inferior player from the Ohio valley conference, with out looking, can you name 2 teams in that conference?

Yea, it’s easy to get ahead of ourselves. I liked his film but if we have to rely on a true freshman then we’re in trouble. I think Bowen much more likely is the answer. Hope he sticks around.

We are in trouble. Lol

When I paid $140 for 2 Nebraska tickets and then I watched them play Field House defense and lose, Fran lost me for good. I won't pay for another game with him as coach. 13 years. Enough. Done.

I thought the Murray twins were horrible in the Richmond game. That could have been the difference in that game right there.

Yeah, 0-8 from three was a killer. And Keegan turned an ankle, IIRC.

Iowa shooting in that game (67-63 loss):

18-37 (49%) from 2
6-29 (21%) from 3
...........................................
24- 66 (36%) overall

9-12 (75%) FTs

63 points

Kris + Keegan:

9-13 (69%) from 2
0-8 (0%) from 3
...........................................
9-21 (43%) overall

6-7 (86%) FTs

24 combined points (21 for Keegan, 3 for Kris)

Give it up man.

He was slow and immobile and its over.

If you're referring to Brauns, he played for Belmont in the MVC

Wrong, @kzoohawk80 . 30 minutes/game was not "just" a number. Joe wanted 30 minutes/game and Fran would not guarantee that so Joe moved on. Interesting that you think that Fran should have guaranteed Joe those minutes and that @Bulldogs1974 and @Steamboat529529 agree with you.

@kzoohawk80 , you then said "the real issue was playing Bohannon over Joe T." And, again, @Bulldogs1974 and @Steamboat529529 agreed with you. Interesting. Let's look at the facts, shall we? When Fran moved JBo back to starting PG, Tony to the starting shooting guard and Joe T to the bench, there was a lot of complaining on here. Iowa's overall record before these moves was 14-7. But those moves had a huge impact. Iowa was 12-2 over it's last 14 games heading into the NCAA Tournament so I think it's pretty clear Fran was pushing the right buttons heading into the NCAA Tournament.

8-2 -- last 10 games of the 2021-2022 Regular Season
4-0 -- in the B1G Tournament, resulting in a B1G Tournament Championship

And @Steamboat529529 said "we wasted some of Keegan and Kris’s talent playing behind our coach’s offspring." Well, Iowa would not have not been in the Richmond game if not for PMac, the coach's offspring. PMac was 4-7 from 3 and was the 2nd leading scorer in that game (18 points). The rest of the team was 2-22 (9%) from 3. Kris and Keegan were a combined 0-8 from 3.

Oh look. Connor…..23 minutes. 0 points. I am so glad he is gone , forever.

What? Are you kidding? I’d disagree. I liked Joe Toussaint but there’s no empirical evidence to suggest he is better than Ulis or Bowen. I’ll trade Bowen for Joe every day of the week.
This is looney tunes and explains why you love fran unconditionally. You know nothing about defense. There is no way I would have taken anyone on iowas team except sanfort and Murray over joe.

Rebraca avg 14 and 17pts his 2 previous seasons before Iowa
braun best yr is 7 pts
ogundle > braun
Not even close to correct…..Braun is a big upgrade over Josh. He’s a better rebounder & shot blocker……plus he’s not gassed after 3 trips up/down the floor. We still a starter 5 from the portal, but I like where this is headed.

Ok, I mean Joe didn’t even start for West Virginia, which deeply values defense. Again, I liked Joe a lot, but he was very flawed and no better than Ulis or Dix. You really think he was more valuable than Rebraca and Perkins?

I said coming into last season that Ulis shouldn’t be playing much. He’s not a good enough ball handler/facilitator to be PG or a good enough shooter to play off the ball.

Just watch, he is an Iowa GA next season, an assistant until Fran retires, and then is named the next Iowa head coach at age 31. Then, 44 years later as the Iowa head coach, he retires at age 75.

This way, he is here, essentially, forever.

Just for you, Daisy Mae.

No. Joe was not more valuable than Rebraca or Perkins. He was much better than Ulis or Bowen. He didn't start for West Virginia who had much better guards than Iowa. He did however play starter minutes at 22 per game in conference play with a PER of 16.6 which was over 6 points higher than Ulis and 13 points higher than Bowen.

There’s more to the game than just defense. Joe didn’t play under control & had too many TO’s….& couldn’t shoot for sh!t.

Joe was also not a great defender by any means.

He gambled all game long and let his man go right by him all the time.

Great hands, poor discipline.

He's already said that he wants to start coaching elsewhere. Fran's also stated that Connor will be starting elsewhere and he even mentioned an NBA coaching role would be appealing to him. Connor will not be at Iowa next year coaching.

Connor will not be at Iowa next year coaching.

Didn't say he would. I have no idea where he'll end up for sure; no one does. But what I did say was "just watch." I.e., I was kidding. I thought that was obvious when I said he'd be at Iowa from now until he was 75 years old. Guess not.

Padilla’s theme song by DJ Khaled, “All I Do is Win.” Guy never lost a game he started. Stats don’t matter according to Kirk, just how the team does. You don’t agree with Kirk?!?
I've been down this infantile road too many times. The team very much won in spite of Padilla. The numbers are the numbers and his are terrible. Take away two throws in one game and you have statistically the worst QB to start multiple games in at least 47 years. He might be anyway.

Inferior in every aspect of quarterback play, which is truly evidence of ineptitude because the comparison is to Spencer Petras. Grasping at this particular straw is silly.

First, I wish Ahron and Josh good luck. They were both really good teammates, and hopefully they will find spots that are a fit for what they want.

So, assuming Brauns takes a scholarship, he is a solid center, but hopefully not the one who has to play starter's minutes. I think that is a good addition. He will help a lot in practice at a minimum, and I see him as a good 15 min/game type player at center. We will never know if JoshO could have played that role. Mulvey could still develop, but that is mostly just hope at this point. We need his enthusiasm on the bench to show up on the court.

The tape on Nimmers is eye opening, although we need to see him against starters in a game situation to get a better feel for just how good he is. Clearly he has a lot of talent, if he can control it against high level opponents. I could definitely see Nimmers get minutes in the rotation at 2. Perkins will get big minutes, maybe at both guard positions. We also have Dix and the Sandfort bro's, who can play 2 or 3, depending on the game match ups. Lots of competition for minutes at 2/3. I would guess that Nimmers will get also one of the scholarships.

Besides the competition at 2, whether Perkins plays mostly at 2 or PG will depend on Bowen and Harding, who both have a lot of talent, but need to show they can play against the physicality and speed they will face at this level. Bowen was not nearly tough/strong enough this year, and hopefully a year of training and practice will change that. If he can just get as tough as Ulis, with his skills, I think we will have a very good PG. Whether Harding can take the leap from HS in his first year is hard to predict. Again, he is very skilled.

That leaves at least one more open scholarship, and I still strongly believe that Fran should be trying to bring in a starting big (4 or 5), who can especially rebound and provide a defensive presence near the basket. We are seeking a few guys who would be great candidates, and hopefully we won't strike out like last year. We do have two very promising freshman bigs. I hope they will be good enough to at least be in the rotation, but expecting them to take starter's minutes is asking a lot. It would be great if one of them was that good!

Kind of the elephant in the room is Patrick. With his size, his natural position should be a 4, but can he develop the strength and toughness to play there? We have a lot of depth at 3, so it would sure help the team if he could make that move...

Umm, how? Braun playing in Ohio Valley gets 7 points and 5 rebounds is an upgrade? How?

in Ogundeles only chance at extended minutes at Purdue, in 16 minutes Josh had 7 and 5 vs the very best big men in the country

ogundele led Iowa in defensive metrics by a huge margin.

it’s not his fault Fran mis-used him, and we know that Fran is guilty every year of misusing better players in favor of his kids.

Good luck to Josh and ahron...thanks for your efforts on behalf of Hawkeye BB.

Hopefully Bowen and Perkins stick around or dembele might feel isolated as the only black scholly player on the roster.
I have to wonder how an out of state black recruit considering Iowa reacts when he sees the lack of diversity on our roster.
I suspect it has hurt Frans recruiting efforts at times.
Teenagers want buddies who can relate to their life experience.

We all know how overmatched we are vs athletic teams like auburn.
I am sick of Iowa fielding perimeter players who cannot match up athletically.
ISU seems to have no problem attracting out of state athletes.
Clearly their culture is different than Iowa. We need to change if we are serious about winning a big a BIG title and making a run in tourny.

Ulis isn't transferring because he is afraid guys that have played very little or not at all are going to take his minutes. He is transferring because it has been made clear Fran's system isn't what best suits his game and his development has suffered due to this.

I could accept a down year with young players on the learning curve as long as they develop.

I’d actually tend to trust Connor with player playing time decisions more than Fran, who has been awful.
