I understand his point but I don’t like people using preseason projections to set the bar on whether a season is a success or not. Don’t Ryan and Fran have their own expectations? I hope to hell their expectations are higher than .500 in conference.

He’s entitled to his opinion just like we are. Regardless of preseason expectations this is a team that played very well through most of the season that has completely collapsed. They’ve lost six of their last eight. Three of those games they were completely outclassed which inspires no confidence that this team will be doing anything in the tournament.
Whether that’s coaching, players or this team returning to the norm I don’t know. What I do know is this season could have been special.

I think of it two ways, the preason predictions, and how they did over the course of the season. Then I base my own determination with a mixed view... The Homer in me tries to stay positive. But the realist is a tad bit bitter. Never liking skids, especially at the end of the season.
Was .500 a good expectation? It certainly is better than hitting .285 last year! But they should be shooting for higher than 10-10. Most certainly after starting 9-5.
Fran needs to figure out how to evolve towards the latter half of the B1G season. Make some significant changes. Whatever he needs to do... As teams/coaches have him figured out by the 2nd half of the B1G...

Hopefully other teams will not be as familiar with Iowa. And that holds a significant advantage vs playing B1G opponents a 2nd time.
To answer your first question, people say that other people suck because the other person's opinion sucks. That should have been self evident. And, those who are calling out other fans in this discussion are doing so because those other fans are calling out a player. Last, you should follow your own advise. If you don't like what is being said, just move on, damn.
What I can not imagine is a grown up man being so pathetically impacted by a quote from a player that he is moved to reveal what an ass he is by disparaging the player for his remarks. Congratulations on not only being such an ass, but for removing any and all doubt that you are such an ass. It is a game. It is only a game. Most people do not measure their personal self worth based on how a bunch of you men play a game. Those who do are the mentally weak minded fans who have become the standard for Iowa fans for decades going back to Lute's time and before that. Just pathetic.
First off, I feel for the players and the media whirlwind they perform in. Having said that, this is life in today's society, so they better get used to it. My concern is this is part of our coaches plan to rally the troops against all outsiders, when they really should be focusing on why this late season swoon has become the norm.
I have no intention of bagging on the players, but as fans you really have to ask yourself, do you not see a problem with how this team performs at the end of the season, and in tourney play?
Unfortunately, I've kinda lost hope on Fran evolving. As to hoping that tourney teams won't be as familiar with Iowa, I'm not sure the other teams are the problem at this point.
Its not like fans are upset at the turn around. I for one am ecstatic, its the fact that we have see what this team can do when they really play well. And it sucks and pisses them off when we see lack of effort and poor decisions, terrible D. Its frustrating to see us lose by 20+ to a team we man handled earlier in the season. And its not about just winning, its sustained effort and desire that the fans want. JBo only shooting 3 or 4 shots in the Michigan game, i know he was guarded but he had a hellava lot of open looks to and to be honest after the year we saw from him, when does he need much of a look to get a shot up and make them. The mistakes they make on lay ups and bunnies show how inconsistent this team is from game to game. Just play a steady game and i think most fans would be fine with this season.

Nah there have always been gossips. Always will be. For a good time call....was scribbled on walls by jerks back then too. People that think they are owed something lashing out when they don't get what they think they deserve. People that twitter and flutter around church to whisper about other people and their kids has always happened.

Agreed. At one point, they were playing what some would consider really well. Like we could actually beat "good" teams on any given day ( which was very surprising to me anyway). Then the bottom fell out, with the Exact Same Team. Boggles the mind how that is possible. A bad game here, a bad game there, sure. But losing 6 of 8 and getting throttled by mediocre teams at Home to boot is just hard to fathom.
Can't blame it on youth either. Basically don't collapse and you won't get criticized to the degree people are being critical. Lose some, win some and be competitive in the losses and everything is OK for a program that has relatively low expectations to begin with. Become unwatchable after a decent amount of success early and fans get upset. Hard to believe.......

Hidden within all the debate about whether Iowa fans are meaner to their players/coaches than other fanbases (they aren't , btw) is the article his quote came from. Shelby Mast, the guy who was referenced throughout, said some interesting things. First, he said Iowa is probably an 8 not because they were stellar but because there aren't a lot of teams better. He also called Iowa's 305th ranked OOC SOS "horrific". So touting an undefeated OOC record doesn't pull quite so much weight in light of that.
Good lord. You don't like the mentality of this quote? What is wrong with being proud of a good season? I am pretty sure it was "drive" and "desire to improve" that got them there.
Everybody pissed and moaned last year at the results, rightly so. Everyone said by god, Fran better get back to the NCAA Tourney or else.....

I hate ISU as much as the next guy, but watch them play and you see a lot of athletic ability. They have at least 3-4 players that go to the basket one on one.
I don't even see one player on the Hawkeye team that can do that.
Every team has strengths and weaknesses. Their’s is the lack of a good front court. They had success against KSU without Wade and Kansas without Azubuike but we’ll see if they run into a good front court in the tournament.
Yet somehow they got beat by a lot of teams who just played team ball. Amazing.
If IA State isn't hotter than a pistol, they lose. They play playground basketball. The Big 12 is down this year, WAY down. They will get bounced in the tournament pretty quickly.

Idk why you don’t like 3-4 players that can get their own shot or take it to the rim. I would kill for Fran to recruit players like wigginton and haliburton

That quote, IMO, is a reflection of his head coach. You can see it with the football players and wrestlers as well.
Yep, it's no wonder this team struggles late.
When things go well they get overconfident and when they go bad they sulk.
Both of those players also disappear or try to do too much at times, too. It's not like they win every frickin' game. They got hot in the B12 tourney but the B12 is WEAK.
I would give Joe W the nod on that. He took his man to the rack plenty this season, especially after he established his perimeter shot.

I disagree I think the fans would complain about what could have been if they would have won 5 of those first 6 games. Let’s get real...many fans just can’t be happy no matter what the team does unless they go undefeated!

They are grown men who are being taught by Fran on and off the court. It says a lot about how they take criticism as a team and their mind set. Again Fran and his teams are mental midgets until proven otherwise.
