Labas

In football terms, being late to meetings is a bigger deal than smoking weed or getting an OWI.

How do you work with a guy on this? Perhaps they tried to get him therapy or something during the summer. Who knows? I bet Kirk is more informed than us about it. If Labas came back in the fall still not fully invested, at a position like QB, that's a wrap.

I bet Kirk has a better idea than us about decisions involving his football team
Well CMU must be better at working with kids then. CMUs coaching staff seems to have gotten labas invested. Makes Kirk look even worse in my opinion. Little CMU turns the kid around in very short time whereas Iowa couldn't.

Why does it matter?

Iowa had one of its best seasons ever.

You think Iowa would have ended up with more wins with Marco?
You think that was one of the Iowa's best seasons ever? That was as brutally painful of a season to watch as I remember, regardless of how many wins they had. Hell, their ability to win those games compounded my frustration of the offense because they could have been a dominate team with an average competency on that side of the ball.

So if you are running a business and have a talented employee that always shows up late, smokes a shit ton of weed and generally doesn't seem invested, you just let him run the show while holding others to different standards? I don't think so.

It doesn't matter if he gave us a better chance. If you don't do as expected you don't play. Pretty simple if you ask me.
Poor analogy but I’ll play. You either fire the guy or let him do his job and play him.

Yes. Iowa won 10 games for the 11th time in program history. That is one of their best seasons ever, period

Too sexy!

Joey Labas threw for three touchdowns and 342 yards and completed 75% of his passes and Central Michigan beat Central Connecticut 66-10 on Thursday night in the season opener for both teams.

Labas finished 18-for-24 passing overall and did most of his damage before halftime, completing 16 of 20 for 268 yards and two touchdowns and sending the Chippewas to a 42-7 halftime advantage.

Soooooooooooo, do they have a detox program in place at CMU that councils and instills values back into young athletes so they want to be a productive member of the team?

Or maybe his interest was peaked at the opportunity to have a chance to play at CMU and produce, like he did in the Bowl game with almost ZERO NOTICE, that he focused on the task at hand. Instead of watching the BS that was playing in front of him every week knowing he had no chance of playing unless our pulling guard QB got hurt. I’d lose interest as well. Good for him on finding a place that gave him a shot. Hope he continues to excel and has a great year.

They've only played 10 or more games for 51% of the program's history. (65 times if I counted accurately) that's a bit of a biased measurement. Winning percentage would be a better gauge, and in that regard there have been 27 better seasons. Most recently 2020 and 2019.

I dont think it is a poor analogy. Labas as QB would be a defacto leader and with NIL he is an employee.

But agree with last sentence. I agree with what KF did and I dont care if he puts up good numbers this year.

Maybe he leanred from his time here and righted his ship.

He was a problem from the beginning and his behaviors were not brought on by any dissatisfaction. From what I hear.

Multiple things can be true:
1. Labas was, after McNamara was injured, the most talented quarterback on Iowa's roster in 2023.
2. The decision not to play Labas was due to reasons other than his talent.
3. Discipline and willingness to follow the rules are important to the culture and success of a football roster.
4. Labas played Central Connecticut State yesterday.
5. Central Connecticut State was 3-8 in 2023, including losses to Stonehill, Brown, LIU, and Merrimack.
6. Central Connecticut State's DBs were completely incapable of staying with CMU's WRs.
7. Labas's statistical output was far better than an Iowa QB's in a single game in 2023.

1) So what changed from IOWA to CMU?
2) Why the instant attitude here?

Just curious because when called on after ZERO snaps under center just before the Bowl game he played an acceptable game. Is that when his mind set changed and he became a problem?

I doubt you really believe that assertion. 2023 wasn't even one of the top 5 years for Kirk Ferentz's tenure at Iowa. 2002-2004, 2009, 2015, 2019 and 2021 were all better than last year. I would put each of Hayden's 10 win seasons and each of his Rose Bowl seasons above 2023. As previously noted, there were many years where the season was shorter and it was exceedingly difficult to reach 10 wins. I think that you would objectively have to put 1956-1958 and 1960 ahead of 2023. Each of those seasons had only 1 loss (2 also had a tie). I think that you have to put Nile Kinnick's senior season above 2023. Howard Jones' undefeated seasons in 1921-22 would go above 2023.

He probably matured and thought I'm going to make a new start. Just a guess. That or the CMU coaching staff DGAF. Id suspect the former but certain coaching staffs in the past have been known to look the other way at times.

Iowa beat several decent teams last season.

But it really doesn't matter what you or I think is or isn't a decent team. There are no astriks, footnotes, or opinions in the record books.

You think some kid that hasn't been born yet looks at the record book in 20 years and forms an opinion of Iowa's 2023 schedule?

Iowa just won 10 games for the 11th time in program history. You think any of the members of that team are going to let someone try to take that away from them? You think they care what anybody thinks about the schedule?

Take any random season. People are going to judge the schedule differently and the record books don't give a crap
11 wins, it wasn't a fair catch

No, it's not that simple...and you're not great at analogies.

Labas' story has specifics. But he's just one more on the list of offensive players that KFz somehow couldn't figure out how to develop and get the best out of....that went on to play well at other schools. He's putting up great numbers tonight in his first game with a new team. FIRST. GAME. Somebody or bodies...at IOWA failed. Wait til Petras puts up great numbers this Fall.
After 24 years, I don't think your "list" is very impressive, if you can come up with one

Some kids don't know how to react the first time they get away from mommy & daddy. I'm guessing he was coddled due to his athleticism since middle school or even before. Everyone in his circle enabled & accepted his bad behavior. KF expected him to fall in line, be a leader, show up sober & on time. Sounds like he didn't/couldn't & paid the consequences by not getting any playing time.

Kirk probably had a long conversation with him at the end of the season & said he'd be better off in new surroundings. Probably a wake up call for Labas & he's now focused and working hard on his craft. He should thank Kirk for the (failed) opportunity at Iowa & his guidance to move on to greener pastures. He's getting a 2nd chance & making the most of it.

Now, let's start a separate thread to show weekly stats for our former QB's, Labas, Petras & Hill.

I don’t know specifics. But you sure as heck gotta work really hard with that player to get them in the right place. Some issues are unforgivable, but from the two that have been brought up, you work with the players and help them get better… I’d be more inclined to punish players more for OWI than what Labas was accused of… you work with players who makes mistake while drinking but not other issues???
But that’s just my opinion.
And maybe…..just maybe……Labas started being late and smoking weed because he was told he was going to be the #3 QB and wouldn’t be playing. We just don’t know the facts.

But I agree…..Kirk (or someone) should have nipped the problems in the bud and worked with him. Maybe somebody tried and failed….I dunno. If not, that’s a failure on the coaching staff that supposedly emphasizes turning out quality young men.

Labas was clearly a better option than Hill.

Best seasons ever? If they had another other than a JH offense, I'd agree with you. BF and his boy Deacon were complete trash! So glad to be rid of the QB coach and OC that didn't know anything about either but still was paid handsomely for it.

I would pump the breaks on Labas as Central Connecticut State is a horrible football team. Sagarin has them ranked 259th of 263 teams. They would be a 33 point underdog to Illinois State and a 11 point underdog to Drake. Central Michigan plays Florida International next and then Illinois followed by a MAC schedule. Illinois State would be a 8 point favorite to beat Florida Int so a step up in competition but hardly Big 10.

Do fans really believe stats at lower level football teams where all our past QBs went mean much compared to playing in the Big 10 where defenses are usually good to excellent.

I think the vast majority on this board are just hell-bent on disagreeing with @eyesofhawk

We bitched about the losers involved in the Doyle lawsuit because they couldn’t follow the standards, but are giving Labas a pass? If what has been speculated about him is true (and I lean towards it definitely being true), then a coaching staff absolutely cannot give that player playing time/starts while expecting everyone else to stay in line.

Could the coaching staff have done more to make Labas feel more involved? Possibly. But the Iowa way has always been to put the responsibility on the players to do the right thing.

You mean because he didn't wear Hawkeye gear, lol?

All I can tell you is the team clearly rallied around Brian. And it helped them win 4 games in a row
And get shutout the last 8 quarters of his pathetic tenure. An average HS OC could have put up points against a Tennessee defense missing multiple opt out starters, including most of their secondary.

While I won’t argue the point that Kirk is not great at evaluating the quarterback position, or that Labas should have played over Deacon Hill, the fact of the matter is Brian Ball is so bad, that no quarterback would be successful in his system.

Seriously. Brian’s offense would make Patrick Mahomes look like the football version of Patrick McCaffrey.
