When Lickliter was let go, he had a decent recruiting class coming in. Who was the post player he had recruited that ended up going somewhere else.

I went back and looked. Aaron Fuller was a solid Lick recruit, but he transferred out. I always thought Eric May was solid too.

May, Marble, McCabe were all Lickliter recruits, but signed with Fran (I believe).

Fuller was good, but I think he was just ready to get away or a change/something new. Anthony Tucker wasn’t the worst player when he put the bottle down.

*May was a SO when Fran arrived.

Lickliter had a few good players during his 3 years at Iowa. The one's that I remember while going to the games were: Aaron Fuller, Anthony Tucker, Eric May, Jake Kelly, Matt Gatens, and Brennan Cougill, most of the rest were border garbage. Remember 2 game wonder......David Palmer? I believe if I remember right he went off coming off the bench and help beat a good Wisconsin and Indiana teams. Will at least one team wore red. Never to be seen again.

Remember Devan Bawinkel? He lit it up in a few games

I remember the mystery of David Palmer.

One of the biggest issues was that the best player(s) continued to transfer out year after year.

2007 -Tyler Smith (before Lick even got here. Not sure you can count that one)

2008-Tony Freeman

2009-Jake Kelly/Jeff Peterson

2010-Gatens/Cole/Fuller (all threatened to or did).

Can you blame them? Lickliter would probably be a good Iowa class A high school coach, where he could possibly start his son.

I was listening to the Hawkeye game last week, and Dolph kept saying Tony Freeman. Half the time he was trying to refer to Tony Perkins; the other half Owen Freeman.

I only listened to about 8 minutes of game time, and he must have said it at least 20 times. Bobby tried using the correct name to respectfully correct him before finally just telling him it's Tony Perkins, not Freeman.

Eric May...didn't he have monster jam capability, am I thinking of the right guy?

Cougill was terrible. Palmer was definitely a mystery. Lick definitely didn't like being asked or challenged on it either.

Yeah he had some ups, but eventually had some back issues or some injury. He wasn’t “Thunder” Doug Thomas, but he could throw it down for a 6’5” white guy.

Made the B1G all freshman team and was a pretty good QB at Wahlert. One of those pure athletes.

There is a funny article of Lickliter's time after he was fired and the 2 games Palmer had was mentioned. Apparently reporters would ask why not play Palmer more and Lick would respond "I've been over this a hundred times"

of course he didnt go over it even once

Cody Larson is the name you're looking for, I think. IIRC he went to Florida instead, and don't think he did much there.

Not sure why this is being brought up now, a decade and a half later. That incoming class wasn't going to save the program from Lickliter's ineptitude.

Also have to keep in mind that, if rumors were true, that Gatens and maybe others were threatening to leave if Lick was retained. It was a revolving door of players leaving the program under his watch. Even if that incoming class was very good, the personnel losses would have offset that.

Heard story from credible source that is true. Gatens dad went to barta and said Matt is gone if Lick comes back. Straw that broke the camels back with threat of local golden boy leaving. Guess Creighton was an option with Matt being good friends and aau teammate with grant Gibbs there. Other believe it or not was New Mexico as both gatens got along well with Alford.

For this I’ll always be forever grateful to the gatens family. As we saw over the years how spineless barta was good chance he keeps Lick another year and doesn’t want to admit his first major hire was a disaster.

Lickliter had the nasty habit of losing exactly the one player he could least afford to lose every season. He also pissed off the HS coaches of Illinois in general. Was a lazy recruiter, but could always count on little lick for a laugh or two every game.

Who was the .Lick player who almost froze to death, or something like that?

I was watching the Creighton game. They have a player named Miller whose dad played in the pros. For some reason, I was thinking it was Miller not Larson who Lickliter recruited

This thread = PTSD.
Yep. I don't need to be thinking about those years. I think my brain had blacked out a lot of that. Some of those players... Man. Had totally forgotten about most of them. Almost feels like it didn't happen. Dark days indeed.
