There aren't many players that have no downsides. Wilt, Michael, Larry, Magic, LeBron, maybe Kobe and some other younger guys whose games I don't know well.
Everyone else from 12U AAU to the NBA can only be judged on their net productivity. The book on Connor is pretty obvious at this point.
He's smart and knows what to do with the ball and where it's supposed to go to put the team in a scoring position, which is precisely the first job of a PG. No Jordan means C is going to be the primary ball handler. I am high on Joey T but, he's young, everyone says his shot is weak and he's got a learning curve (probably not as smart as C who is very smart on and off the court).
C can penetrate. Not the dazzling quick kind of penetration but just going over the smaller players that will be guarding him most of the time. This isn't gymnastics, you don't get style points.
I think he'll be a good defender because he's so much bigger and stronger than most other PGs. If the refs don't totally hose us, which does happen often, C McC will be just fine on defense.
BUT...…..the shooting has to be sufficiently good to prevent the 5 on 4 defenses we saw too often last season. The free throw shooting has to be sufficiently good that other teams cannot basically generate turnovers by simply fouling our primary ball handler late in games. If he can improve those areas, he doesn't have to be great, but better, then he's going to be a solid starting PG for two or three seasons. If not, Joey T is probably going to jump him next season.
