I was perusing the Joe Parisi (Lindenwood) tournament information and found that Logan Ryan is entered into the 165# bracket. I know there was talk on this board that he had gotten a bit bigger, but goodness sakes, that is quite the jump. Is he a full sized 65? Is he cutting to get to 65? He was at 41 last year...I thought I remembered someone mentioning that he pulled quite a bit to get to 41, but that is still quite the jump to me.

With Marinelli appearing like he is injured...is Ryan an option for the 65 spot?

Without seeing them wrestle, it would surprise me if Ryan could beat Gunther.

I think somebody said he st. john in wrestle off, Gunther might be another story.

I'm afraid we are realistically going to put out some weak sauce this season at a few weights. And that's not a good formula for competing for national titles.

Coming into the year I thought Turk would be a better 141 pounder than we have had in a while. That is gone.... I also figured Marinelli would be an AA at 165. I still hope that will happen but I don't know the injury situation. My biggest concern was 197 but Wilcke is a goer and he will surprise alot of people this year.

Awfully early to be that negative. 141, 165 and 197 are the weights you are referring to I am assuming but I think we could surprise people at all of them.

I agree, and hope you are right.

Unfortunately there seems to be a recurring theme of nine room guys vying for three spots and expecting to be competitive against the Jonses as well as the Sandersons.

Wish I had your optimism on those weights. I'd be surprised if we get any points at ncaa at any of those weights, with the possible exception at 165, only if Marinelli goes.

Cash Wilcke has all the tools and the attitude to very good. I wouldn't sleep on him. Carton is lightning fast but is a very small 141. I think Gunther will be our guy at 165 unless Marinelli pulls his shirt. He is a good kid and a goer, hoping for the best.

Loved what I saw from Cash. He dominated like a top guy should...not a borderline starter.

When big Sam is ready to go will Hollaway go down to 197 and try to beat out Wilcke?

Only if they are surprised at how Iowa has 3 large holes in the lineup. Those 3 weights all look to be 1-2 BBQ at best in March.

And very, very unlikely on Holloway at 197. Didn't someone say he was over 220 last week at Luther?

Yes, he weighed in at 221 and in his interview stated he was working on eating more.

Well if Jones is Zeke Jones, we can beat AZ st. The Sandersons are a different story......

The team title will be decided by our big dogs Gilman, Clark, Sorensen, Kemerer, Meyer, Brooks, and Stoll, IMO. It's not as if PSU or tOSU have no weak spots on their team. 125, 157, and 165 for tOSU will be equally as weak. We need our top guys to perform, High and Mid AA performances across the board with champs (1,1,2,3,4,6,6), instead of High and Low AA performances with no champs like this past season (2,2,2,4,8,8).

Yep.

Unfortunately, Kem is wrestling up, Meyer seems to have forgotten how to wrestle, and Brooks and Stoll aren't healthy. I'm getting queezy.

True. We Iowa fans naturally want to see studs at all 10 weights. Hopefully we get there one of these years. That said, team titles are won by the big scorers most years. Very rarely do you get the 10-AA-type championships like the one MN won in the early 2000's. Much more often, you ride a handful of finalist/champ types. Just look at PSU in recent years. They've had plenty of holes and dropped a dual meet or two but gone on to win Nationals with relative ease, on the shoulders of a handful of studs who rack up bonus points and win championships or make the finals.

If our studs shine in March, we'll have a shot. That said, we'll need a couple of them (i.e., Meyer and Brooks) to really come on. Titles with bonus points from Gilman and Clark, another finals appearance with some bonus from Sorensen, and a strong showing from Stoll, and we might be in the hunt. Throw in Marinelli, perhaps, and who knows what could happen.

Plus, early losses by the youngsters can be growing pains as much as anything.

I'm determined to stay positive through March and enjoy the ride. Who's with me?

Another positive I'm taking away, is that Glosser looks like he may be a very capable replacement of Sorensen at 149, come the 2019 season. He is developing very nicely.

I like how Wilcke competes too, he will only get better.

Looking at some of the losses by some stud wrestlers in their redshirt year (thanks Wrestlestat), I don't think there is much for worry. This time last year, guys like Carter Happel were wrestling turds in small gyms across Iowa at full feed. So coming to a tournament like this, wrestling seasoned college backups, losses are going to get taken. For example, Dean Heil lost to Brenden Murphy, Andrew Atkinson, and Nick Anderson. Had a so-so RS Freshman year and is now on his way to trying to win 3. Daniel Lewis got beat by a couple of guys from his own room and lost to #50 Nestor Taffur and Pat Smith...backup from Minne. Takes 4th the next year.

My point? Nobody really knows except for the really elite guys. Anybody think that Marinelli wouldn't have beat Flynn? Also, it's a great learning tool and gives the coaches credibility when they preach weight control and conditioning. Sure, you can roll through and whoop on fellow freshman but when you are wrestling men, it's a different story.

Here is what I think. Last year, two years ago, Iowa would have wrestled Brooks in the duals and Marinelli in this tourney. I don't think they are going to take any risks before Midlands. Guys are going to wrestle less if they are not at least 83% healthy. Iowa is nails at Midlands and the duals and then we fall off the cliff because of injuries. Don't be surprised to see us go into some duals with backups.

Good thing some of you wimps aren't on the mat. This thread is the equivalent of Jake Ryan in the 3rd period of a match. Let's make Hawkeyes Wrestling great again. MHWGA.

I was talking with Logan's Mom at the Tournament and she said he cut pretty heavy last year to make 141 and got sick from it. She said the coaches didn't want him cutting this year. Not sure why.....didn't pry.

Az, FLO had Carter ranked #8 in the final 145# HS rankings, last April, with 5 soph and jrs ranked ahead of him. 5 months ago Happel lost by TF to PSU's class of '17 recruit Lee. Today he went 2-2, dnp at Paresi.

I'm not knocking him, and I agree there's always hope for development and no one really knows what will happen in the future, but at this point in time the results some project for him seem overly optimistic. jmho

I don't know how many are projecting him as an NCAA champ or anything. He was never that elite. He did beat Mitch McKee last year among others. Just saying that I don't think he had a match go the distance until this open and having watched him over the years, he did not look the same today. Carter will either develop or he won't...better to have this type of tourney now instead of dominating the Frosh-Soph category. BTW, Nick Lee could start at 141 for PSU tomorrow if he was in school IMO.

Screw it, I think I'm going to stop letting the thoughts of March and injuries ruin my day and season. I'm just going to enjoy going to the duals and watching the guys we have out there do their thing and worry about March when I'm in St. Louis watching our studs go for their titles.

I'll be on the Gopher board from now on so I can feel better about life. Stop by and let me if something positive happens.

The part where it is November.

Fair enough. It's just that for a few years running things have looked better in November than in March. And we have been very unlucky with injuries.

Hopefully the issue now is simply the coaches have decided they too are tired of injuries and are being overly cautious.

I'm rooting for Gunther to have a big year. He is a goer and hopefully can put together a great folkstyle season this year.

He is a hammer when it comes to the international styles. While great at folk, he has much better results in Freestyle and Greco.
