Mac McCausland has passed away ...

Prayers to the MacCauslands.

Met Mac at a sports book in Vegas during March Madness one yr. Introduced myself and he stood there and talked to me for about 15 minutes. Very nice man.

To me, Mac is the voice of Hawkeye basketball. He loved the Hawks and was very knowledgeable. Helped teach me the game as I watched the broadcasts as a kid.

Posted this in the Lounge earlier. Wanted to share it here. Mac was one of the best people I've been around in this business. Always made time for everyone.

So much to say about Mac. Was gutted when I heard the news about his passing. Just saw Mac and Kent at a recent Iowa basketball game. I told him we needed to catch up sometime soon.

One thing that people may not realize is that Mac was one of the first people to really create an AAU type basketball program that had some of the best players in the country playing on it. Raef LaFrentz and Ryan Bowen were on that team and obviously Kent was as well. That Iowa team kicked butt and really turned a lot of heads.

The one thing I will always remember about Mac was his kindness. Back when I was first starting here in 2003 we were part of Voice of the Hawkeyes Magazine. That meant that I would be writing in the magazine where Mac was also writing. That was such a thrill to me. Mac was the soundtrack to the lives of every Iowa basketball fan and now I was in a magazine with him. I also got to know Mac at that time and he could not have been nicer. Went out of his way to be kind to me when he didn't have to be. I'll never forget the first time I want to the Nike Camp in Indy and Mac was there. He introduced me to everyone. We even sat down with George Raveling while he had dinner and we sat and listened to him tell stories.

When Iowa would have a coaching change, like after Alford left, my first call to help put together a hot board was always to Mac. He always had a great feel for a coach who would work or wouldn't be realistic for Iowa. We would talk for hours about this stuff.

Back in November of 2012 Iowa was playing in the Cancun Challenge. I took the tough duty of going down to cover it and then coming back on Thanksgiving Day to cover Nebraska at Iowa on Black Friday. I think it was me, Mac, and Scott Dochterman down there. Anyway, it was at one of those all inclusive places. Hell, they had a bar set up in the "gym". Anyway, Mac and I were having lunch and I told him we need to do a pic of him with chips and salsa, his signature line. He loved it. He put the plate together and really went all out. It was so much fun.

Mac was the best. RIP Mac. Prayers to Kent and the entire McCausland family.

One of the things that was hard to get used to was not hearing Mac and Larry Morgan with the Big Ten Network starting. I was bitter once all of our games were not on TV and missed that duo.

Really sucks. RIP Mac and prayers to the whole family.

Have had a few beers with him and jr up in the kinnick club. Good guys.

What sucks most about getting older is the things that made your childhood great start to leave this earth. Mac was one of them. So many nights sitting around the TV listening to him call the Iowa games on ESPN plus on KMEG out of Sioux City. RIP Mac. You were great.
The biggest voices of my childhood following sports were Mac MacCausland/Larry Morgan, Jim Zabel, Harry Caray and John Madden. Those were great days and Mac & Larry will always be the voice of Iowa hoops to me.

I remember watching Iowa Hawkeye basketball on Raycom with Mac and Larry announcing. Those were our guys and couldn’t ask for better people to call Hawkeye games. Chips and salsa to Mac!!

MAC MCCAUSLAND PASSES AWAY

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Former University of Iowa men’s basketball player and longtime radio and TV color analyst Mac McCausland passed away of natural causes on Saturday, Feb. 5, at his home in Las Vegas, Nevada, at the age of 75.

McCausland was on the men’s basketball team under Coach Ralph Miller and graduated with a Business Administration degree from the University of Iowa in 1969.

McCausland, who was the father of four-year letterman Kent McCausland (1996-99), served on the National I-Club Board from 1975-93, including serving as President of the National Board in 1986-87. He was honored as the National I-Club Hawk of the Year in 1980, Lifetime Honorary Director in 1993, and was the recipient of the 1994 Iowa Letterwinners Club Distinguished Service Award. In 2002, he was recognized as an Iowa Letterwinners Club Honorary Letterwinner. He also served as a longtime President of the Black Hawk County I-Club.

“The Iowa basketball family is saddened to hear of the passing of Mac McCausland,” said Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery. “He and I grew extremely close over the past 12 years. Not only was he a fixture at our games for many decades, but Mac was at our practices and traveled with the team on some road trips. He had a deep passion for Hawkeye basketball and his family. Our deepest condolences are with the McCausland family.”

In addition to his numerous years of service for Iowa Athletics behind the scenes, many fans know McCausland as a radio voice and television color analyst for Hawkeye men’s basketball for multiple decades. He also wrote a basketball column for Voice of the Hawkeyes and worked in the insurance industry for 50 years.

His love for his Iowa Hawkeyes was only bested by his love for his family and friends. McCausland cherished every moment with his four grandkids, Kent and his daughter, Amy. McCausland was a friend to all who encountered him.

Funeral services are pending with Locke Funeral Home in Waterloo, Iowa.
