Manville not going to PSU?

I'm not sure you understand the process outlined above. The kid will wrestle for PSU under ROTC and then join the army and wrestle for them, not PSU agan.

I understand that they are wrestling for the Army, but as I understand it, the WCAP is located in the PSU wrestling room. Is this not correct?

The Army did not set up the WCAP at PSU. The WCAP has been in place for a long time, currently there are about 20 wrestlers in it (there are also other sports in the WCAP). Most of them train at the OTC, I believe. Last year the Army set up shop for three athletes at PSU. I guess you could call it a satellite location.

To answer some other questions in the thread - ROTC scholarship and WCAP are separate. When you accept an Army ROTC scholarship you are obligated to serve 8 years after graduation - 4 in active service, 4 in reserves. So you go to college on the Army's tab. Following graduation you owe 4 years active service. You can apply for WCAP (in multiple sports). If you're accepted into the program, you basically serve your time training in the sport to represent the Army in competition (think Forrest Gump and his table tennis stint). The Army has a pretty significant presence in Greco with it's WCAP.

I know all about the WCAP and ROTC, I am surprised the NCAA has not looked into this a little closer. This is definitely called AN UNFAIR ADVANTAGE.

What is unfair?

Find a kid who wants to go the ROTC route you are half way there. Sounds like smart coaching to me.

"Last year the Army set up shop for three athletes at PSU." This is the unfair part. Will the WCAP set up camp in every wrestling room in the country? Probably not.

What does it matter where a kid does his "active duty," to you?

I'd be surprised if the Army wasn't willing to do the same for any school with a post grad wrestling program like the HWC.

Say hypothetically, the WCAP has set up shop in the Iowa room. Now Iowa could go to guys like Lyon and Falbo and tell them, "we really don't have scholarship money for you right now, but we can get you a full ride if you join the ROTC program. You won't really have to serve in the army afterwards, because you can join the WCAP (we promise you will get in, wink, wink) and you get paid to do it! You can continue to train in the Iowa room with the same coaches and you won't have to move or anything."

You wouldn't consider that an advantage?? From what I can tell, this is the exact situation that PSU has set up.

3 athletes at PSU...But, none of them were PSU athletes...

Thanks for the explanation. When are the Navy and Air Force setting shop in Happy Valley?
An announcement is pending. Any day now. The only hold up is getting the slush fund's bank's software upgraded to handle that much money.

Its time to end scholarship limits across the board and have colleges individually report to the NCAA by sex to comply with Title IX.

lol

Let me know if there is trouble with that software, FM. I bet I could find an account to hold it for a while.

The athlete must be willing to walk the ROTC line for four years and and be of a calibur to qualify for the WCAP. After college, another eight years are devoted to the service of our country, four active and four reserve. Twelve years will be spent under the supervision/service/employment of Uncle Sam in one way or another. Take that to Lyon or falbo and see what they have to say…

Agree with above, Jackhawk is missing the point. ROTC is available at many schools. It takes a unique kid that wants to commit AT LEAST 4 years service + 4 reserve post grad to the armed forces. These are kids that are interested serving anyway. Matt Brown was on ROTC scholarship before WCAP started having resident athletes at PSU. If an Iowa wrestler was interested in this, I doubt that having to spend his service time at OTC or PSU instead of home in Iowa is what is holding him back.

The only advantage to this for PSU is 3 more senior level athletes plus coaching hanging around the room year round. Which is a plus for PSU as someone pointed out above in recruiting. Between the NLWC, WCAP, PSU team and the frequent visitors (Gold medalist Tatsuhiro Yonemitsu has been living there for the past year) there are a ton of high level bodies to train with and different coaches. This is a big plus when it comes to recruiting.

Wow guys not rocket science. All services have a wrestling team Army Navy/Marines and Airforce. Each year they have the all service championship the top two generally go to the world qualifier. To be on the team you can be enlisted or officer. I was lucky enough to make the Navy team a lifetime ago circa 1985. The Navy Team coach was Rob Herman who ended up a world team coach at some point. This predates WCAP but has been around for decades. We were all active duty and I was assigned temporarily from a ship.
