I like this, gets him better prepared for 165 next year.I was under the same impression as Hawkmann in that it was just for the Blair dual, but if he can dominate up a weight and feel good....more power to him. Dude is an animal.

I was going to mention that this could be an effort to bulk him up this year to cut to 165 for next year but didn't want to open that can of worms. But since it is opened... I am in favor at this point if he can step right in and put bonus points on whoever we put out there next year I think Brands needs to look at starting him.
Haven't been encouraged by Paddock and considering how much he has wrestled 174 I am guessing 165 is a cut for him. With Gilman, Clark, Meyer, and Brooks all seniors next year I think Brands should go all in and start the Bull.
Or25 Gilman
33 Clark
41 Turk
49 Kemerer
57 Sorenson
65 The Bull
74 Meyer
84 Brooks
97 Holloway
HWT Stoll
Solid!!! But let's finish 2016 with a title too
I agree that Kemerer looks like he could fill into 157 better than Sorenson. I think we see Sorenson stay at 149 the next couple years while Kemerer bulks into a solid 157.
And it helps his senior teammate Garrett Jordan go from having little shot at a title at 170 to being the favorite at 160. Plus Graham is out of high level opponents/tournaments for the rest of the year minus the St Ed's dual who doesn't have a good 170.In the interview after the dual he said that he will be at 170 through states. Said he could get down to 160 if need be but he feels better at 170
I agree. I think Sorny is done growing and while he may be a big 149 he can definatly hold it out for his career. Plus I dont think Kem is done growing. Most PSU fans who spoke about him when he recruited him said they would be suprosed if he holds 149 for more than a season.
Kem just needs to use this year to get stronger and work on defense and getting out. Hes got the offense and the talent is there to thrive at 157. Only problem is Im not sure it matters who goes 157 because I dont see either Sorny or Kem beating Imart, Nolf or JoJo. So likely looky 3rd/4th at best case next year. Im sorry i like Sorny a lot but i cant take him over those guys up a weight. Which supports keeping Sorny at 149 because out of the 2 weights that is our best shot at a Champion in either combinations we want to debate.
NoI'm very far removed from this so it may be a dumb question. Does Happel have the ability to make noise next year at 141?
I agree with your Cooper/StJ strategy in theory, but Cooper has beaten 2-3 guys ranked in the teens and is ranked #16 by Intermat. To me that's spitting distance of R12, which is worth a few points at NCAAs. Meanwhile, I'm not yet convinced that StJ even exists. (Although, per his match-by-match results, he is undefeated in his Hawkeye career with all win(s) coming by bonus points.) If StJ is really that close to Cooper in talent level, I think we'd see more (any?) of him.I
Agreed. I dont see any way we can redshirt Alex next year. 165 will be such a hole and Alex is the type he could handle going as a true freshman. Just makes sense. But there could be one way..
If Kem and Sorny are our 149/157 in whatever order and we really may want to redshirt Alex then at some point this needs to happen but it wont. Bench Cooper and just let Skyler St John get the experiance and take a few beating and lets see what we got in him. I liked the few times ive seen out of him. Looks raw but you can see flashes of DSJ. Ive been ok with Cooper up until that Gantt match. I get Gantt is legit and very good but i expected way more fight and a closer match.
Im a bit down on Cooper right now and I think some of us are kidding themselves with his upside this season. Im not even sure he will qaulify 157 for us let alone score points at nationals. Im starting to look at 157 right now as ISU did with their QB situation. Build for next year and put Richardson on the bench. If SJS is going to progress I think this is a fair question at some point?
Throw SJS out there and see if the light bulb shines bright and maybe just ,maybe he is more ready for 165 next season if he gets Coopers starts.
If anything id like to see them start rotating starts at 157 again. Starting this weekend. Who wants Imart?

As has every freshman straight out of High School in Tom Brands tenure. Book it.Happel will redshirt next year.
That will change next year, just not Happel. As has every freshman straight out of High School in Tom Brands tenure. Book it.

Though I agree Cooper isn't likely to be a point scorer at the NCAAs it would take quite a collapse from him the rest of the year to not qualify. Highly, highly unlikely. We are trying to win THIS year. The best wrestler needs to be on the mat. Give me the guy who is ranked and has beaten ranked wrestlers over the guy who's only been able to find the wrestling mat in competition one time in two years--at this point, anyway.
BTW, you realize the coach who had that brilliant idea for ISU got fired, right?
I totally understand that but Rhoads getting fired had nothing to do with the QB change. Well it got Mangino fired becasue he didnt want that. In fact the QB change was a hail mary by Rhoads that was about the only way to save his job and he almost pulled it off. QB change was a positive for Rhoads and the program, however Rhoads found a way at KSU to even overcome that with even more horrible coaching.
As for Cooper, I dont know, I think your hoping more than you want with him. I think the problem is what Tarp was saying. We are hoping for a possible round 12 with Cooper now. And the ranked guys he beat, he turned around and lost to one of them (Richie Lewis) the next time. Lewis is a round 12 guy and to me Cooper beating him was the fluke, not the other way around.,Im just simply suggest that I dont like where i see Cooper heading so lets build for the future with SJS. Tarp I saw him wrestle a high scoring match earlier this year. Ive never been a fan of SJS and really didnt think he was that talented and was just living on his name. But that kid has come a long way and is much improved. Id like to see where it can go and if it can get accelerated by more mat time. hes pretty active and showed some fight. I question if Cooper has some fight or get upset in some of these matches. Reminds me of Jeva way too much. Gets behind and just no urgency.
I dont expect Cooper to get benched but I will be upset if SJS doesnt get a few spot starts or even split some of these weekend duals.
IMart might go up next year after D-Ringer is gone, but looks like Nolf will have to stay at 157 since Cenzo can't make that weight(missed twice this year).I doubt nolf stays at 157. There was talks this year whether he would be at 57 or 65. Who knows with imar. He's a tank but he's so short so I'm guessing he's a career 57.

Oh no ihawk is going to be upset if SSJ doesn't get some pointless spot starts. What's new? The future at 157 is Kem or BS so what is your point again? The future at 165 is probably The Bull. So at least try to make some sense or better yet go back to silent mode for awhile.
Marinelli and Garrett Jordan flip weights to help Garrett's chances of a state title.
The word Sorny should be banned. Moderator!!
2013-152Curious what wieght did Alex win his first state title at? I remember reading that he could be the heaviest weighted kid to win 4 Ohio state tiles? if that makes sense, not sure how to word that.
And lets assume he gets the 170 this year. What 4 weights did he win at?
Not Borschel like in other words................2013-152
2014-160
2015-160
2016-170 possibly
This is what I remember
