Decidely less difficult schedule, compared to Theeeeee IOWA HAWKEYES.

That being said, I hear Maryland's arena is a difficult place for visitors.

with the way we have been playing and the way we handled them last year, our boys will be very confident walking into their arena Thursday. I am not expecting to win, but I will not be surprised in the least if we do. I have watched a few Maryland's games and they look a little soft to me. I think we have a bit more swagger to us right now than they do. They looked really bad against Northwestern last week and didn't match MSU's intensity Saturday night either. We will bring the fight to them, can they match it?

Coach Fran will have a good game plan to defeat Maryland.
Our four Seniors are wired to compete on the floor of our
opponents. The Hawkeyes will give Maryland all they want
as they go for their 8th straight conference win this season.

I was surprised to see Trimble only averaging about 13 points a game. Has he had injury issues?

He is kind of the ultimate pg on the court. Big distributor and can drive and dish, drive and finish or pop the big 3. He is most effective when he gets others engaged and involved. I think he had 24 against MSU but they lost. He is better when he gets the rest of the team going.

Agree, very, very good point guard. Controlling him will be the key for us to have a shot at winning.

From what I have seen, Maryland is obviously very talented, but struggles playing team ball at times. The other thing I noticed, and I;m not sure if this is reflected in the stats, but they are very sloppy when passing the ball around in their half court sets. Perhaps we could take advantage and grab some steals in that area?

Maryland's three losses (UNC, Michigan, MSU have all been on the road). Maryland is tall but has a limited bench. Rebounds, tough defense and fouls/ foul shots will probably make the difference. Melo is way better than Yogi. Diamond Stone compares to Caleb Swanigan. Gesell's gotta improve his shooting quick and stick a couple quality 3s. Baer, Uhl and Ellingson have to have another good showing if Iowa wants the road win.

It will be really interesting to see who Maryland throws on Uthoff, Sulaimon is by far their best defender but would give up way too much height and create a ton of trickle down matchup problems for them. Uthoff is way too quick for Carter and Stone for those guys to spend a lot of time on the perimeter, putting Layman on Uthoff gives Uthoff an advantage and creates a weird mismatch somewhere else with Carter or Stone most likely on Clemmons, but is probably the most likely scenario.

SOS means nothing here. Iowa has a target on its back and there's no question Maryland has talent. I actually expect Maryland to be favored in this one, and hope we can stay hot!

I expect their fans to remember Woody's eye poke of Trimble last year, and be very hostile toward him (which he seems to like). Should be fun, and if we win...oh boy.

IMHO we need to play a similar game to Purdue. Contest the 3 point shots, block out on rebounds, and get Woody going. I know Uthoff and Jok are big but once Woody got involved cutting to the basket, Purdue was not as able to defend our guards opening the outside shooting

Maryland is definitely beatable at their place, and as mentioned, any team that plays @ MSU, @ISU, @ PU ain't gonna get rattled by playing where turtles live. It's just really tough to see the Hawkeyes losing to MD...or anyone else right now. Too multidimensional. Too talented. Too tough. And besides, Hawks eat turtles for lunch.

Maryland is a very talented team and last year they clearly didn't show up in CHA. It might be the 850 mile flight. We weren't exactly "crisp" a week ago when we made that trip to the east coast. Thank goodness it was only Rutgers. Melo, Sulaimon (sp?) and Lehman are very good. They got a huge boost with a scoring big man in Diamond Stone. Carter can play. We really need to show up and play with intensity in order come out of there with a win. It still may not be enough.

They are a wounded animal protecting their home court. Melo and Sulaimon are the real deal at the guard position. I love our guards, but we have traditionally had problems with PG and SG that are that much "quicker" than we are....

Still - what a win it would be if we could pull it off. No matter what happens as the ball goes inside, our guards cannot sluff off of Melo and Sulaimon. They can/will make it from 26 feet if they have to.

Stone has a 2.1 Assist rate, when the ball goes into him, it's going up.

I think Maryland had this one circled before we were even ranked. Seems things got a little chippy during the game in IC last year.

MSU was a talented, wounded animal, too, with their POY candidate healthy and the wild home crowd ready for blood. And they got it, but they didn't expect it to be their own. LOL

Sure, Maryland could win Thursday, but I've seen them play as well--home and away--and there is no reason to fear them any more than anybody else.

When you've swept Purdue and MSU, scoring 100 points in the two second halves combined vs. Purdue and totally decimated Sparty in East Lansing by 17, well, if anybody should be scared of this one, it should be the Terps who just got whupped in that very same venue.

And if it gets chippy, these Hawkeyes know how to handle it. Before the game in East Lansing, Valentine told Clemmons he had a red dot in the middle of his forehead. Nice thing to say to your bro. How did that turn out for the V-man and his bunch?

These Hawkeyes don't back down. Rutgers and its 3,000 fans cannot be compared to how the Hawkeyes will swoop into Maryland. It's whole different ball game, and I'll stick with Iowa to come out still unbowed and still undefeated.

Hey all, I come in peace. You guys are balling right now so I am expecting a good one on Thursday. A few thoughts I've had reading this thread:

- I would expect Layman to be on Uthoff and Sulaimon on Jok. This would create a bit of a mismatch with Carter on Clemmons, but I understand he is only shooting ~30% from deep. Layman and Sulaimon are by far our best defenders, so they need to be guarding your most dangerous scorers.

- Yes, most of the fans in attendance will remember Woodbury's eye poke last year and will probably be on him about it all game.

- Someone mentioned it above and it was a great observation, but we definitely have struggled a bit in the half course offense this year. Many are questioning Turgeon's offensive game plan, or lack thereof, which we heard from A&M fans when he first made his way to College Park.

- Our biggest weakness is probably depth. We have 5 guys that can go off and score 20+ in any game, but after that it's a bit of a question mark. Dodd and Cekovsky are our big guys that will undoubtedly get some run, but Dodd isn't very good and Ceko is inconsistent (though he has had some great games guarding guys like Kaminksy). Our guard depth is even worse and we have a 5'7 walk-on getting close to 10 minutes a game in the last few. He's a feisty defender and works his ass off, but he's basically a net zero on offense.

Having said all that, I'll take the Terps in a close one on Thursday. You guys may be rolling, but this is a really, really big game for us coming off a loss to Michigan State and I think we will be the more desperate team. As y'all have noted, we are also really good at home and it's going to be a rowdy crowd with the students sitting around off from class because of the storm.

Good luck and hope those of you making the trip enjoy!

Diamond Stone is the one player that Iowa will have trouble matching up with, imo. I predict he will be a 1st round NBA after this season. He is the best freshman in the Big 10 this season by a mile.

I think Baer will have ample opportunities to feed...when Maryland tires a little and loses track of him.

this game has instant classic written all over it!

the hawks really haven't been in a tight ballgame late in a long time...I think that changes Thursday

A team which would be sitting at 5-2 or 4-3 in the Big Ten having played Iowa's early schedule would be considered a very good team, one of the favorites to win the conference.

Iowa is pretty battle hardened and driven...winning at Maryland would be another feather...

PG play for Iowa vs Maryland and twice vs Indiana could be the key to the season...

Sorry but I don't see a close game. I predict Iowa by 10-12. Yes, Maryland is talented but IMO they are undisciplined and shallower than a Hollywood A lister. Diamond Stone is talented and an ox but he did a great impression of Bigfoot the other night. He showed his face, scored once or twice then disappeared. I forgot he was even out there. Trimble is good but by himself, not enough. I like Layman but no way is he shutting down the Ute, unless the Ute let's him. Carter is a nice solid big but he's not a go to. As for Sulaimon, I really expected a bigger year out of him, but IMO so far he's underachieved. As for coaching, no one is hotter right now than My Man Fran!! As I said Hawks by 10-12.

Layman will get his lunch eaten by JU. He does not impress me in the least.

Really good observations here...especially the Layman on Uthoff and Sulaimon on Jok gameplan. It will be interesting to see what Uthoff does with this match-up. My guess is that he's taking it to the hole because if Maryland has been paying attention, they can't let him sit out there and bomb like others have allowed. If Layman comes up...expect Jarrod to drive and dish or finish. It's an interesting matchup. I think Fran is going to try and wear this team down and I fully expect Clemmons and Gesell to take turns on Trimble and make him work every second he's on the floor. I think the Iowa bigs run better than the Maryland bigs and that's going to be a factor. Fran's going to push the pace.

Key is to keep Mello out of the lane, which is extremely difficult. Maryland is a very streaky 3-point shooting team, and most of those shots are set up by Trimble creating for others or himself. Carter and Stone are both gifted interior players and Trimble knows how to find them, so we need to stay between them and the basket and keep them off the offensive boards.

It will be interesting to see how they match up with the Hawks on defense. I am guessing that Sulaimon (sp?) plays Jok and Leyman plays Uthoff. That should create some speed matchups that our guards and subs can take advantage of. We still need to keep making shots.

Should be another great game. Let's give Mary Land its first B1G home loss.

If Maryland figures out that Stone is far and away their best player we're in serious trouble. There's a ton of talent on this "team", but there's a bit of top ten sports center- me first mentality. Working the ball into Stone and letting him go to work gives them a final 4 shot.

I expect the Hawks to be a dog and the zebras to wear chef's hats for the home cooking.

I expect we will fight and if the threes are falling we've got a punchers chance.

I agree with you. Unless the Hawks hit a huge shooting slump I don't see them losing any of the remaining regular season games.

I know Maryland is still undefeated at home in Big 10 play but so far his year that had to come back from double digits in first conference game of the year vs Penn St and needed OT to beat N'Western.

However I think crowd and atmosphere maybe little more amped up when Iowa comes to town. Plus how nice would it be to see Van Pelt on Sportscenter Thursday night doing highlights of a Terps loss to Iowa.

The thing I think will be difficult for us vs MD is their balance. They have some of everything we've faced: size, shooting, athletic ability, excellent PG. Plus, they've got 5 guys averaging double figures. Difficult to shut them all down. But I'd start by putting our best guard defender, Sapp, on Trimble. He stirs the drink for them. We are also a little better than MD in most categories: scoring, rb, asts, 3pt%, even stls and blks. Part of that has to do with our tempo being faster. So, if we can score close to our average, 75-80pts, keeping our tempo up, I think we have a good chance. Playing @MD will even a lot out, however. This could be our first really close B1G game.

Luckily this is no where near the case.
