Maybe they are pulling a page from the Matt Gatens playbook and threatening to leave unless there is a coaching change.

(Doubt it ... players seem fond of Fran.)
Fran is really a down to earth guy. I was his host at an I-Club outing and spent the evening with him. And we discussed Conner and Caitlin before it was common knowledge. We had a great time. But our team really needs help. This NIL has really put us behind the 8 ball. Thanks JBO.

Yes, so if you have a Garza, Keegan, Kris, and Weezy on the same roster, you would need to go to portal and recruit a supporting cast and make your NCAA tourney run. Or you can avoid recruiting/playing guys that would compete with your two boy's playing time.

You can't win back fans with a mediocre product and a head coach that lacks charisma and is mostly interested in contract extensions/maximizing his long-term payout and playing his boys over winning. He ran the program for 6 years trying to avoid
recruiting guys that would take PT away from CMAC and PMAC.
You think Kris Murray should have played his freshman year over Connor? Connor had a role and he played it well. Don’t forget, one of the best seasons was lost to covid. But that might be too much logic.

There are a lot of guys that are fun to have a beer with and talk about our kids’ girlfriends. Hopefully Iowa can take the next step and narrow it down a bit, like to someone interested in and capable of building and coaching a competitive MBB team….

I might suggest it was the other way around...FM has put out feelers to big fish every year but was almost completely unsuccessful while his sons were here. Now that they're gone the 4-stars have finally started coming. It's vexing and makes me hope the next coach only has daughters.

Tough to replace Connor's 3 points/3 rebounds/3 assists a game in the 20/21 season. 32% FG%

Connor played more minutes than Keegan that season
Dem sick post feeds though!

I have nothing against CM or PM personally, it's just the mere fact that they got (a lot of) playing time that I think harmed recruiting for at least one cycle.

I used to not believe this but it seems plausible now.

He wouldn't start Keegan or play Kris their first year, then he wouldn't start Kris his second year.

There's no way Keegan wasn't better than Connor and Kris wasn't better than Patrick the minute they got there, it's just not possible.
Kris as a ball handler and distributor as a freshman? You have zero basketball IQ if you believe that was the answer. That was the role Connor played with other dominant scorers in the line up and I’m sorry you and the other bunch of morons can’t understand that.

I have no defense of how Patrick was used, but to say Connor was not an integral part of those teams is wrong. Kris was not capable of doing that at that point in his career. All the revisionist history in the world will not change that.

This is such a stupid response to things I clearly didn't say that theres no reason to respond to it in a serious way.

But ill throw a couple points to out there and see if you can work backwards and connect the dots.

Connor started over Keegan
Patrick played over Kris.

Figure it out.

They played different positions and roles. It’s not apples to apples. But go ahead and keep comparing the two of them.
They both played the 4.

You don't even know what you're talking about.

And I don't give a shit what Connors role was, Talent > role.

Pressing X to doubt.... definitely sounds like bullshit.

Just off the top of my head in 2000 -- UCLA, Duke, North Carolina, Kansas, Indiana, Louisville, Michigan State,

Then...just in the Big Ten you have Purdue, Illinois, Michigan, and Ohio State. Not to mention Syracuse, Georgetown, Arizona, Arkansas, Cincinnati, Oklahoma State, UNLV...that's 18...

I honestly would be very surprised if we made a top 20.
See Dochterman about it…that’s where I got it. He mentioned it in his last pod with Chad. Scott’s a lot of things….good and bad….but the guy knows his stuff.

It’s not personal. I’ve also met Fran away from basketball. He was a helluva nice guy to me, but it’s over at Iowa for him as bball coach.

Go watch the replay of Iowa vs the Fab 4 after the death of Chris Street. Or the game when Dr Tom scored 100 on the General in Iowa City. Student section and the crowds were raucous. Totally unlike the mausoleum that it is now.
Yep, but Dr Tom inherited that, just like he inherited his best teams. I think it started under Lute (my first experience with Iowa BB). Imagine that students actually waited in a long line when tickets went on sale, the year after the Final Four, because we thought Carver would sell out quickly. At the time, I wondered why they didn't make it bigger. And, if you think it was noisy in Carver, you should have attended a game in the Fieldhouse, with its metal seats. Your ears hurt for a couple of days after a game. I haven't been to Iowa City in 40 years, and I can't imagine the fanbase being as lousy as it has been for the men's teams for years.

I can't believe how lucky I was going to Iowa for grad school and getting to watch both BB under Lute and FB under Hayden. Totally different time.

Also hearing that there is a lot of tension between some of the players. Owen Freeman is at the center of it! Sounds like some of the players thought he could’ve played with his finger injury. It’s a perfect storm for a new staff to come in clean house and start building culture of winning at Iowa!
I said this when he shut it down. He's a post player, not a jump shooter, and lots of guys play with a broken or injured finger, especially post players. Tape two fingers together and play on. How may jump shots has he taken all year?

I hope Cooper Koch sticks around if/when the coaching change happens. He's a good shooter and seems to have a high BB IQ from the limited minutes I have seen him play.
I wonder about his long term health. The smoke that he has respiratory issues from long term covid or something.

Maybe McCaffery came clean with players about his future and the rumors being reported are the players immediate reactions.

I guess it is not surprising to hear the noise, but always a bummer when players leave (not all). SWAG, but maybe Freeman/McCabe along with Dix will be a package deal at Nebraska or Creighton, just a thought. Creighton is losing their center and point guard to graduation this year and have a very good program. I have watched Dix closely this year and he has not looked happy (understand his mother is ill recently) and seems to be less than enamored with the Pa Sandfort show (not to mention PM last two years). BH is understandable given the fan animosity and/if Freeman leaves.

If most of this happens it should be the end of the McCaffery era and IMO that is a good thing for Iowa MBB. The Iowa MBB needs an infusion of new blood and energy. The program is essentially become dormant at this point. Kind of a replay of the end of Lickliter era and several players leaving.

Only time will tell, and we will ultimately see the results. The good news is the transfer portal allows the right coach an opportunity to get the program back on track very quickly.

BTW this is all just my take from my recliner and I have zero inside information.
Why would McCabe be in a package deal with Freeman? Is this a breeder program?

You do realize that in 2000, I believe, Sporting News or Sports Illustrated ranked us as the 10th best program in college basketball? That’s pretty much a reflection of our overall success in the 80s and 90s (with a sprinkling of 50s and 70s). Don’t kid yourself, we were relevant….not so much anymore…
I wouldn’t say top 10 but could argue top 25! It’s going down too! The past few seasons have been hapless and keeps no momentum to work on top 20 finishes and some 16s here and there!

Yes he inherited talent but he also got that team to number 1 in the country and the Elite 8, something we haven’t sniffed since. He was responsible for getting them to play to their potential. And the Street death came 7 years after Dr Tom got here. Bball was still a very very big thing.

Patrick got 32 minutes a game. As a sophmore Owen had way better numbers, and only played 26 minutes a game. As a junior he would make more money, and have his pick of some pretty good teams, and his play is what is going to have to make him the man.
Are you sure of those minutes? I’m not saying they’re wrong it just seems like Patrick was never healthy enough to log that many minutes?

Iowa had a lottery pick in Keegan that couldn't even start as a Freshman at Iowa because Fran started his son CMAC.

CMAC 3.3 pg would not have missed from starting lineup. Keegan should have started at PF over CMAC, that team needed defense/rebounding more than an extra passer. Kris could have came off bench and been Keegan's backup as he was still 6'8 and better rebounder/defender. Kris also should have played ahead of PMAC also for Weezy backup minutes. The next year it was pretty obvious Kris was better than PMAC---no reason Kris shouldn't have played as Freshman other than Fran didn't want him to play because it would have taken minutes away from his two boys.

The Murray brothers both ended up in NBA and the old Fran fan's can't admit that CMAC was just a product of his Dad's Nepotism.

Kingsbury on the current squad is a similarly basketball talent to CMAC. The biggest difference is he doesn't have his Father sponsoring him. CMAC went directly into coaching--even he realized he wasn't a good basketball player.

Roles?? Connors role was to throw basic passes to very good players. He did nothing special that 50% or more of power 5 players couldn’t do.

You need to get back and see at least two games each year. Step it up man !

How is it irresponsible to publicize that you will fulfill NIL contracts no matter what?
Surely you understand that Brad will not be able to personally cover the NIL every year? He essentially telegraphed to any future recruit that our NIL base is completely unsustainable.

Additionally, Brad didnt say it to brag about how great our collective is. He made the comments in response to allegations that he didn’t care about the men’s basketball team.

Bottom line, it didn’t need to be said publicly.

Brad didn’t make the comments publicly and yes, he probably could fulfill bball’s NIL expenses every year if he wanted. It rules that we’re giving kids exactly what we promised. Regardless, recruits are not deciding their future based on a message board post.

Was there.

Kingsbury went ballin ballin!

That’s the day the Fab 4 learned how to play street ball like a brotha.

From Kingsbury! Not joking. That’s what happened for you youngins. And not going to lie, I was scared for the Fab 4 that game in Carver!

It’s one thing to act/pose like you’ve played street ball.

It was a whole ‘nother thing to see Chris show them REAL street ball!

They feared for their safety, I feared for their safety, America feared for their safety!

Haven’t thought about that game forever. I believe it was on a Sunday right??

I believe Kingsbury started at Iowa the following year and did not play in the 1993 Michigan game.

Down to earth? Wow, he fooled you.

He's an arrogant, self-important jackwagon who thinks anyone who doesn't agree with him and his entitled kiddies is ignorant and worthless.

His interviews on ESPN Radio--admittedly well in the past, since he hasn't been relevant for several seasons--showed just how self-important he and Marge really are.

It's a known fact that Iowa is at the bottom of the B10 in NIL funding and I'm sure other teams when recruiting use that fact.

There's podcasts on YouTube, tweets on X and articles written for newspapers about it.

Oh oh Rocky. This is correct. The 1992-93 roster (which was the season Street died) did not include Chris Kingsbury...I believe the guy who was ballin was our old friend Papa Murray...
That team had Final 4 or at least elite 8 potential. Acie Earl and Street up front with James Winters, Lookinbill, young Russ Millard plus of course Frosh Kenyon Murray. Barnes was a great juco pickup and while the rest of the guard court was not great they were quick defensively. Street was amazing on the press.

If you think Fran is an arrogant jackwagon I cannot wait to hear your opinion about the personalities of Pitino, Bill Self, or Cronin from UCLA.
