Missouri to Iowa: “Hold my beer”

We have a new AD and are about to have a record athletic gift. Don’t be shocked if you see big changes at Mizzou. This 💩 won’t stand anymore.
Mizzoufan90, I live in Missouri and have always struggled to be a Mizzou fan because of these type of performances. I turned the dual off after Mocco.

But in all seriousness isn’t Smith one of the more accomplished coaches at Mizzou? Yes football had a good season. I hate basketball so I couldn’t tell you anything there.

Maybe you’re saying this in jest. Not here to start an argument. It was an odd weekend for wrestling.

Iowa #2, Michigan #12
Okie #3, Mizzou #9

Iowa #5, #1, #2 all upset while not scoring a TD.

Sorry, not even in the same conversation.

I'll give you Real's match but Mizzou had one TD (O'Toole at the end) up until 197. Surtan #7 lost to #20 Spratley, Mauler lost to Travis, and Mocco lost to Thompson. And if you believe Michigan is really a #12 with all of their lineup, then perhaps you shouldn't be on here.

Not a Mizzou fan (at all), but I think that the point is that sometimes even teams with good coaches can have bad days, and when they do, some yahoo will call for the coach to be fired. Smith is a very good coach, so I say . . .

FIRE SMITTY!!!!!

;)

We get the point, but we’re not Missouri. Smith can have these performances and he’s still the best Missouri has ever had at the helm. Overall, he’s above their expectations. That’s Missouri.

This is Iowa. Our standards/expectations aren’t the same. And it’s not about one dual meet. The dual meet is just the catalyst for a renewed discussion, given the prolonged state of things. It’s about consistently failing to meet expectations (in 11 of the past 12 NCAA tourneys, which is where the bread is buttered).

Do we do better than Missouri? You bet we do. But that’s not the standard at Iowa, or at least it didn’t used to be. So, no. It’s really not the same, or at least it shouldn’t be.

What is the deal with the neck brace on Surtin? Obviously, a neck issue, but this must be difficult to wrestle with and a signal you typically wouldn't want to send your opponent. I'm surprised Okie St didn't try snapping more.

These braces Should be allowed, its a distinct advantage keeping guys from getting to collar ties and impeding on the ability to club and snap nevermind twenty other reasons. You cannot tell me you have a neck injury and this brace will prevent further injury complete BS.

Now you know how everyone felt when Gable was around. Now it's Cael who's kicking everyone's ass . You want a new coach but no other coaches are beating Cael either. Iowa isn't a program you hire someone with no experience. You say people make excuses well what are the excuses for the other 76 head coaches that can't beat Cael. Because you will be hiring one of them

Iowa has more resources and a stronger brand (no pun intended) than the other programs. So yeah, one of the other coaches would do better here than where they’d be coming from.

I’d start with a list of coaches that has put up comparable or better numbers in terms of individual champions over the past 5-10 years. Plus any coaches with consistently strong recruiting results.

Koll comes to mind. Imagine his results over the years if he had been operating with Iowa’s brand and resources. P-Pop would flourish, too.

We’ve all been assured by BigBucksBobby that playing field is level between PSU and Iowa for resources. So what’s holding us back? We need smarter coaches who have wider skillsets in technique. Our culture under Brands is stale and soon to be moldy.

Koll/P-Pop as head coach (to be CEO, gameplan, and make the big in-match calls). Former PSU stud as assistant (to help skills/development in the room). Tom Ryan as recruiting coordinator.

Pay the men! The field is level!

Koll just went back to his alma mater . And Pop doesn't seem interested in leaving NC st. You think Tom Ryan will leave a head job to be a recruiting coordinator? Not sure why I even answered this 🤣🤣

Yeah, Ryan was a half-joke. I know he would not take a demotion.

I’m aware of Koll & Pop. But Koll didn’t stay at Stanford long. And $$$ talks.

Exactly. Brands and staff should be embarrassed. Not getting the top guys and not getting the best out of the guys we have seems to be a trend....

You say the culture is stale and I am not sure I agreee. It seems that a lot of people want to come to Iowa and they do so with the portal. Maybe it is because they did not think they could cut it at Iowa coming out fo high school and realized later that they could or maybe TnT are just rotten recruiters and rotten at identifying talent. Whatever the reason is, Iowa still attracts very high level talent.

The truth is that no one develops the talent and identifies talent in the same league as Cael. Replacing Brands is not going to magically make someone able to recruit and identify talent better than Cael.

I do agree that the training methods and wrestling style changes would be good and I also think they could get better non Iowa people to bolster and improve their coaching staff, but right now, you guys sound like every fan sounded when Gable was tearing things up. There is no easy answer to being better than the best coach out there.

Playing devil's advocate here - it sure seems like Coleman Scot has helped OSU to improve greatly this year. New, young blood is often times a good thing.

Also of note is PSU recruits skipping their senior year and going straight to NLWC.
This would be a goal to reach for.

While we're at it, why don't we dig up Danny Hodge and clone him like the T-Rex in Jurassic Park. ;)
We are either wishfully thinking, or delusional, or just fantasizing, or maybe a little of each.

This helps tremendously but obviously until the hhwc dramatically improves, I don't see it happening at Iowa at the level it happens at psu

If your neck is that screwed, you shouldn’t be wrestling.

Wow..... I'm going caffeine for a week or two and I mis-read that as you wanted Hawkeye recruits to skip their senior year to train at the NLWC. 🤣
