President Donald Trump today announced tariffs of at least 10% on practically all goods coming into the United States, plus even higher rates on dozens of countries that have the highest trade deficits with the United States.

The new policy represents a dramatic shift in global trade and economic policy. It’s aimed at restoring US manufacturing prowess and the balance of trade. But it threatens to escalate an emerging global trade war and raise prices for American consumers at a precarious time for for the economy.

Trump’s policy will put in place a baseline 10% tariff on all goods from all countries except those compliant with the USMCA free trade agreement between Mexico, Canada and the United States (non-compliant goods will continue to be charged at a 25% rate). Importers of goods from other nations will begin paying the baseline 10% tariff on Saturday at 12:01 am ET.
A group of about 60 or so countries, which senior Trump administration officials labeled the “worst offenders,” will be charged a tariff at half the rate they charge the United States. Those reciprocal tariffs will go into effect April 9 at 12:01 am ET, according to a senior White House official.

President Donald Trump said that the US will impose a 25% tariff on all foreign-made automobiles effective at midnight ET to address “horrendous imbalances” that have impacted the country’s “industrial base” and put national security at risk.

Trump noted how many countries impose high tariffs on US made cars.

“None of our companies are allowed to go into other countries. And I say that, friend and foe — and in many cases, the friend is worse than the foe in terms of trade,” Trump said during his remarks from the White House Rose Garden. “But such horrendous imbalances have devastated our industrial base and put our national security at risk.”
Trump added that he doesn’t place the blame on other countries for “this calamity.”

“I blame former presidents and past leaders who weren’t doing their job. They let it happen, and they let it happen to an extent that nobody can even believe. That’s why, effective at midnight, will impose a 25% tariff on all foreign made automobiles,” the president said.

Got to pay for those tax cuts some how. Easier to sell this then raising rates on lower classes.
Yep . . . then when they have to buy something in 2 months and its 30% higher the consumers will be complaining up a shitstorm. Do you realize how many tax clients I have had saying Iowa is so great in lowering their tax rates, and not taxing retirement benefits, I said don't worry they will make it up somewhere and most likely real estate taxes. Along with higher millage rates, they are going bonkers on assessments. My house supposedly went up in value $90,000 last year LOL. Seems like they are doing it across the board.

Word, remember when Walker was limiting local governments ability to raise property taxes. My beef is they’ll just pass something such as a fee on 100 different things instead of a tax.

Shorting the S&P going into his announcement was easy money.

Of course it was dumber and worse than expected.

It hurt quite a bit this week with the moves up each day for no reason whatsoever

I did it today. Scheduling the announcement after the special elections was an indicator of how it would be received.

I’ll get out of the position tomorrow because who knows if he’ll actually follow through.

What’s maddening about Trump is the horrible communication and worse execution solving problems. There are most certainly unfair trading practices that need to be addressed. Spreading tariffs like peanut butter across, well everyone is not a great solve. Repatriating or requirements on foreign profits of US corps would do more good.

Total lies.

We have factories all over South America and Central America as well as Mexico, that is, until they kick us out.

There’s a reason we had NAFTA, and the other trade agreements.

He’s clueless on the misery this will cause, but it won’t affect the rich.

He is worse than any of the SA dictators ever were. They didn’t attempt to starve the people.

You think the Chinese respect patents? Seriously?

Unfortunately, tariffs fit his limited mental capacities. It’s a single word, he can spell it (I think), and it’s perfect for his transactional mindset on everything. And he can put them on an pull them off without consulting with anyone.

He’s like a dog with a bone.

A massive percentage of the goods we all buy are either directly imported or have some intermediate parts that are imported for assembly here. Per the link below 48% of the value of goods we buy were made elsewhere. So a 10% tariff on everything is the same as saying we just got hit by 5% inflation. But it is worse than that because the big trading partners like China will have much higher rates.

We could be looking at near double digit inflation on physical goods.

And it’s not like these factories can be online tomorrow. That will take years and that is if the companies want to reshore.

We just signed up for stagflation. Great job MAGA dumbasses.

We only make 52% of the stuff we buy here

Doing all that requires work and you're not going to get that from any MAGA including Trump.

I made massive computer hardware purchase yesterday and I'm feeling pretty good about it.

Thank goodness. Now I don't have to worry about the rising costs of nesting dolls.
I'm just still in awe of how tough Trump is on Russia. I definitely get why @Finance85 believed Putin, and would repeat what Putin said over and over and over again on here when Putin said he'd rather have Biden than Trump. Because Trump is a ****ing hardass on Russia.

The few, the proud, the Chase Oliver voters.

If only it wasn't for Biden though. We would be talking complete world peace with no inflation. Eggs would be so cheap that we would be throwing them at houses for fun.

Trump is quoted as saying something to the effect of declaring our independence.

This guy is a total ass clown. It now makes perfect sense how he bankrupted 6 different companies.

Jesus Christ.
