Nikki Haley announces she is running for President

I have seen it suggested that the RNC is trying to get a number of not quite as crazy as Trump candidates on the primary, so they pull votes from DeSantis and then Trump wins handily. Because you have that fairly large population withing the party that will vote Trump no matter what (30%+ at least probably).

Just accept it @Tom Paris . Dems would be wise to get a better VP for Biden if he runs.

Maybe. . . but I doubt it. Unless Harris is willing to just quietly retire claiming that this is what she really wants than replacing her on the ticket will cause a lot of headaches as it's pretty much de-facto admitting you made a mistake the first time around.

That's why it's so uncommon in the modern era to do that.

It's probably better for him to just keep her on unless it could be sold as something that she wanted. The only way to do that is to either say she has a higher interest in running for a different office or to say she wants to retire and spend more time with her family.

The different office thing likely wouldn't work because the governorship of California isn't up for election in 2024 and she just left the senate so seeking a senate seat would just seem silly. So really the only way to replace her is to essentially put her out the pasture and ask her to quietly retire. Given that she's relatively young in political terms and ambitious that doesn't seem likely to happen.

Boring ad overall, too long, and poorly structured.

Why Haley? What's her thesis for being President? What's her campaign theme? She offers a hidge podge of the usual R talking points, nothing unique.

Also, one minute in, and she's talking about dead babies right there in her launch ad...um, don't do that.
I think there are a lot of Republicans who want anybody but Trump.

Did I say he was racist?

And yes, I don't think it, I know it.

He considers anyone who doesn’t hate black people a race traitor. So racist…against whites.

I'm not a Kamala fan, but it's weird how she was despised from day 1. Nobody can really say exactly why.
You had examples in here already lol. Joe Biden and Tulsi Gabbard undressed her in the debates and she just isn’t likeable when presented these facts. Never recovered from them

But the people who dislike her the most are Republicans who tend to support heavier criminal penalties and are the last people to be concerned about sentencing disparities.

The only possible explanation is that she’s a brown female. It can’t possibly have anything to do with her party affiliation. I mean, hell, if Republicans despised politicians simply for having a “(D)” next to their name then you would see Republicans routinely speaking ill of white males like Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders and Beto O’Rourke and Bill Clinton and Al Gore and John Fetterman and Adam Schiff and Chuck Schumer and Gavin Newsom and Andrew Cuomo and JB Pritzker and Bill De Blasio.

So that can’t be it.

Well there are other reasons I’m sure for certain segments of the population but all the polling and articles that are coming out are basically saying Kamala is the worst to work for and sucks at her job. Dems don’t trust her

From Day 1 I think has a lot to do with hating any Democrat as well as racism and sexism, or any combination. As well as a feeling she was chosen purely for political reasons.

But some of us who were intrigued by her resume have been thoroughly disappointed. I mean, it’s the VP role so not like you can do much, but she has done almost nothing to demonstrate she’s qualified or able to take over the reins if Biden stepped away. She’s been underwhelming in all respects IMO.

Finally, some of us are worried it’s created a huge mess for Democrats in 2024 and it will open the door for the GOP candidate.

Only way to toss her would be...

1) She has to agree
2) Give her a cabinet position she'd be willing to take.

Can't just shit can her...even though she's a net negative for the administration.

Kamala is pretty mediocre but the same can be said for most of our recent VPs. I didn't want her simply based on policy. She is a former prosecutor and attorney general who has never shown much interest in police or prosecutorial reform. She is opposed to Medicare for All. For someone who is supposedly so scarily left, I can't find much that would be considered left wing that she supports.

Interestingly enough giving her a cabinet post would probably not work and would be seen by the general public as a demotion even though in reality a cabinet secretary has way more power than the vice president does.

The other issue is that in order to do it Harris would probably have to resign the vice presidency and accept the appointment. In the meantime there would be a big risk of a president Kevin McCarthy should something happen to Biden.

Yeah, Congress would have to approve the replacement VP and we all know that’s not happening.

I agree on the VP front on them being mediocre but this situation with Bidens age is kind of different imo. It will be a huge talking point for the right and I would think the Dems would put someone else in there that is more likeable

I think she just lacks charisma. That is tough for a politician.

Mayor Pete would be my choice. Gretchen Whitmer is up there too. Im a fan.

Well, it is what it is. Charisma is nothing new, especially in the time since TV.
Kamala Harris comes across as a spacey weirdo, I fully admit it.

I've never been a fan.

I presume based on her CV that she must have brains at least for academia, but man does she struggle to communicate coherently.

Haley definitely has a huge hill to climb to win the R nomination....but if she did. She's a bigger threat to beat Biden than any of the other prospective R candidates.
If she denounced Trump and highlighted her work at the UN, I'd consider crossing party lines and voting for her.

The problem is, she can't do either of those things if she wants to win the primary.

GOP candidates have boxed themselves into a trap of their own making.

Interesting article in The Financial Times yesterday on how while that SOUNDS good, it might actually be the best thing Trump himself has going for him:

The Republicans have an acute Trump dilemma

The more crowded the 2024 race, the higher the chance that the former president will secure the party’s nomination

The proverbial cemeteries are filled with conservatives who thought they could beat Donald Trump. Some Republicans, like Nikki Haley, the former UN ambassador, who launched a presidential bid this week, were against Trump before they were for him. Now she is against him again. Others, such as Mike Pence, the former vice-president, cannot bring himself to criticise the ex-president even after the latter incited a lynch mob against him.

Trying to come back from the political dead will be no picnic. America has seen this movie before. In 2015, like today, the Republican establishment was largely united against Trump. Big donors parked their cash. Party figures withheld their endorsements. Strategists cast around for those likeliest to beat Trump. Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz were identified but came up short. Neither is giving any hint of wanting to run that gauntlet again. Each warned that Trump posed a toxic moral threat to the nation. Having been humiliated, each then jumped on the Trump bandwagon.

As Haley is likely to find out, the Maga base does not admire flip-floppers. The Republican party’s Trump dilemma is acute. Almost everybody associated with him has been badly diminished. In her video launch, Haley proclaims that she does not “put up with bullies”. Yet she served Trump loyally for two years. The most direct criticism she can make of Trump is that Republicans need a younger leader.

Haley’s content-free candidacy is the fruit of having submitted meekly in spite of knowing better. She cannot disown her past. Similar quandaries confront Chris Christie, the former governor of New Jersey, and Mike Pompeo, the former secretary of state. Each were loyal henchmen. The only candidates who could beat Trump are those who never served him. Florida’s governor, Ron DeSantis, South Carolina’s senator, Tim Scott, and Virginia’s governor, Glenn Youngkin, are the most plausible.

Of these, only DeSantis — the tip of the conservative anti-woke spear — so far has the profile to compete with Trump. He also has the support of many of the party’s big donors. In a straight matchup, DeSantis would beat Trump, according to most of the polls. But in a crowded field, Trump could repeat what he did in 2016 when he won primary after primary with less than half the vote. From Trump’s point of view, the more candidates in the race the merrier. In some ways, that understates his prospects.

The weaker Trump seems, the likelier others are to enter the race. Call this Trump’s “heads I win, tails you lose” strategy. Such is the familiar dread coursing through the Republican establishment. Few think that Trump could beat Joe Biden, who shows every sign of running again. Most also believe that any other Republican could beat Biden. They are probably right. Trump has never won the US popular vote and is unlikely to start now. The problem is that there is not much the anybody-but-Trump crowd can do to stop 2016 from happening again.

Gone are the days when party grandees could prevail on weak candidates to drop out. Republican elders lost their power to do so in 2016 and are in no better shape now. People such as Mitch McConnell, the Republican Senate leader, would love nothing more than to see the demise of Trump. The same applies to plutocratic donors like Charles Koch. But they lack an eject button.

The best they can do is persuade DeSantis to run and hope that the less plausible candidates quickly fall by the wayside. For the time being, the direction is predictable. Trump will continue to appear more vulnerable. As his legal woes mount, so will his temptation to tap small donors to pay his lawyers’ bills on the pretext of saving America, or fighting crime, or stopping socialism. There are many ways to skin that cat. America’s campaign finance regulations are highly fungible.

Second, the Republican field will get steadily larger. By my count, there are at least eight names planning to declare, probably more. Of these, DeSantis seems the most diffident. It is by no means a given that he will run. Yet it is worth stressing that DeSantis is the only potential rival who Trump is regularly insulting. Trump’s latest nickname for DeSantis is “meatball Ron” — though he may have been warned off it because of the implied insult to Italian-Americans. “DeSanctimonious” did not catch on. If you do not have a nickname, Trump does not fear you.

Step forward Haley, Pompeo, Christie, Pence and others. Trump wants you to run. So does Biden. The irony of US politics today is that Biden and Trump happen to agree on one big thing. Both want Trump to be the Republican 2024 nominee.

said this before but I think Haley did a better job threading the Trump needle than most. Unfortunately for the GOP it's a needle that needs to be threaded....go after him too hard and you're basically toast in the primaries.

Threading the Trump needle = no backbone.

I know I’m asking a lot for politicians to do what Cheney and Kinzinger did, but they should be the standard. Not someone like Haley who alternated between tepid indirect criticism and sucking up/ass kissing.

Why what?

Sorry, I thought it was obvious that I was asking why you think your claims are what you claim.

Why are these the only conditions that Biden could get rid of Harris as his next running mate?

1) She has to agree
2) Give her a cabinet position she'd be willing to take.

Nobody votes for a vice president.
I think in the 2024 election more people will. I would put his chances of making it through another 4 years at less than 50/50, whoever is VP will very likely be president at some point between 2024 and 2028.
