Thanks for the posts.
If all of our players have progressed as much as this summer indicates (and we know that's unlikely), we are going to have a very entertaining year.
I stand corrected, Land of 10 has it up on their facebook page.

Nunge guarding the 3 is definitely a question. I think he can guard some B1G 3s, but an athletic 4 like Cook looks to be a problem. Work in progress.
This is why I would temper expectations a bit for Nunge. While I think he has big time potential and will end up being a very good player, I don't think he's ready defensively at this point. If he can't guard, I don't see him getting a lot of minutes this year.
Cook is going to be a problem for most of the people guarding him while he's at the 3 (and the 4 for that matter). I'm just glad that these freshman are putting in work against players of Cook and Bohannon's caliber every day.Nunge guarding the 3 is definitely a question. Nice article. Here's the URL:Mark Emerett from the Register had nice article on Nunge/Cook matchup. Interesting comment by Nunge in the article, he mentioned Kriener as the toughest matchup in practice.
Guarding one on one in the PTL vs. understanding team defense principals and containing your man with help in a team defensive setting are light years apart.
Woody saw a lot of minutes as a freshman because we needed a post presence on D at that time, just like we did last year. Like that Woody's team, this one's D will get better dramatically with Kriener/Garza getting the majority of minutes at center.I get that those are two different things, but most freshmen are going to be behind in terms of understanding team defensive principles as well. If you also struggle to move your feet and stay in front, it compounds the problem.
As good as Bohannon, Cook, Pemsl, etc., were last year, remember how bad they looked at times defensively, especially early in the year? Fran really had no choice but to play those guys last year, but he will have other options on the interior, which is why I think Nunge and Garza will likely not see a ton of minutes this year.

Kriener/Garza have different skill sets than they did, but look to be this team's Woody/Olaseni combo at center. Garza has a presence in the lane that has Woody elements + he can block some shots. Kriener may be difficult to stop offensively. His motion and shot look very transferable to the regular season. They won't initially fill out the minutes at the 5, but the interior is going to have a much more vertical presence.

Yes, team defense is a more advanced concept so clearly you need to be adequate in the simpler things first like one on one defense.

Why because we have so many great one on one defenders now? How was Cooks defense last season? Yes Jack has a lot to learn, but he's a smart kid, and he just needs to learn how to fit into the TEAMS concept of defense to be effective. I'm sure there's not much team D being played in the PTL. Also I'd bet Nunge will be a pretty big mismatch on the other end of the floor, so there's that as well. This is why I would temper expectations a bit for Nunge. Last season, Mac McCausland said "Iowa fans are going to see a lot of that."20 of his points came via dunks.
Is it not always wise to temper expectations for every freshman? Cook is a great example. That is the biggest recruit to come Iowa's way in a long time. While Tyler was a very good freshman his game had some pretty big holes.
The compensation is, of course, Hawks do not need to count on the freshmen. This roster is pretty deep up front.
Couple of friend's that watched some PTL games told me that Kriener had really improved, which kind of echoes the information above. If that turns out to be true and Garza is even close to his PTL performances those minutes at 5 are going to be locked down for damn near 40 a game in every close game. By close I don't mean near 30&12 but capable of holding his own for 10-12 minutes a game, not making major mental lapses, scoring when the opportunity presents itself (no Woody misses on those layups) getting some rebounds and boxing out so Cook/Pemsyl and the Baer Cage can get some rebounds as well.
Nunge is really really skinny. Skinnier than the Ute and, as we know, the Ute got tossed around his first couple of years of B1G ball.
Can't wait for reports from Europe. Great chance to build for the season.
Yeah he's listed as less than Ute, but Jack looks relatively filled out from every video I've seen of himNunge is not skinny.
