Nice article from the Gazette on Kreiner:

Kriener has averaged 29 points, shot 59.2 percent from the field and 40.9 percent from 3-point range during six games of PTL play — and has stood out as a breakout player in those games.

“Since the season ended until now, I feel like my game has grown leaps and bounds,” Kriener said. “Some other guys are making jumps, but I feel like mine has been a small explosion.

“What it was for me, I was just so internally motivated to play more this year and be a better player this year.”

Update on Maishe Dailey:

“My goal is to start, so I’m trying to beat everybody out at my position,” Maishe Dailey proclaimed Thursday after playing in the Prime Time League at the North Liberty Community Center.

Hawkeyes that would seem to have the edge on Dailey for playing time include Isaiah Moss, Nicholas Baer, Christian Williams and Brady Ellingson.

Dailey said he never considered transferring in search of more playing time, wanting to prove that he can have an impact in the Big Ten Conference.

Dailey has grown an inch, up to 6-foot-7 now, and he’s not done yet, he said. Also on his checklist is to weigh 205 pounds by the time the season starts in four months. He’s at 195 now.

“With how light I am, I can move my feet with the guards. And with how long I am, I can rebound with the bigs,” Dailey said. “So I can play inside and out defensively.”

It’s difficult to picture how Dailey fits in with an Iowa team that will be adjusting to life without Peter Jok. That leaves an opening for a wing player, but everyone this summer seems to be rushing to try to fill it — from junior forward Ahmad Wagner to incoming freshman Jack Nunge. Plus the four players Dailey mentioned.

Dailey’s strength is his lack of a weakness. He does everything well, from rebounding to passing to defending. But does he do any one thing well enough to supplant a more experienced teammate?

Thanks for the posts.

If all of our players have progressed as much as this summer indicates (and we know that's unlikely), we are going to have a very entertaining year.

You are welcome.

If you saw the article I posted above, you have to love Dailey's confidence, but I don't think he is starting....

Its funny, too, because multiple people are posting the stats for all the players from Thursday's games but I still don't know who won the 3 games and what the scores were.... LOL

Below were the standing prior to the final games on July 13; the Prime Time League web site does not have the July 13 game results listed.

I am assuming we will see the bottom 4 teams in action on Sunday, July 16; not sure who is playing who for sure because that is based on July 13's results and tie breakers; the top 2 teams (Baer Moss and JoBo Kreiner) get a bye.

See posts above in order to watch the action LIVE

Standings thru July 9's Games:

4-1 Baer Moss (won head to head over JoBo Kreiner)

4-1 JoBo Kreiner

Today's two playoff games in North Liberty look to be pretty good! And they are rematches.

Take a look at these scores from the first 6 rounds of PTL. Hopefully today's rematches are just as good and just as close.

Cook Uhl 113, Nunge Ellingson 111

Wagner Williams 89, Dailey Garza 86

Well neither Tom or Land of 10 seem to be streaming today. Wish PTL would parter with Iowa student production, like BTN does.

Sedge

Watched for a bit. Nunge guarding cook. Cook having his way with Nunge. A few vicious slams in traffic. Cooks handles look really good out on the perimeter. Took Nunge off the dribble on numerous occasions.

Nunge guarding the 3 is definitely a question. I think he can guard some B1G 3s, but an athletic 4 like Cook looks to be a problem. Work in progress.

This is why I would temper expectations a bit for Nunge. While I think he has big time potential and will end up being a very good player, I don't think he's ready defensively at this point. If he can't guard, I don't see him getting a lot of minutes this year.

Guarding one on one in the PTL vs. understanding team defense principals and containing your man with help in a team defensive setting are light years apart.

Cook is going to be a problem for most of the people guarding him while he's at the 3 (and the 4 for that matter). I'm just glad that these freshman are putting in work against players of Cook and Bohannon's caliber every day.

Mark Emerett from the Register had nice article on Nunge/Cook matchup. Interesting comment by Nunge in the article, he mentioned Kriener as the toughest matchup in practice.

Kriener/Garza have different skill sets than they did, but look to be this team's Woody/Olaseni combo at center. Garza has a presence in the lane that has Woody elements + he can block some shots. Kriener may be difficult to stop offensively. His motion and shot look very transferable to the regular season. They won't initially fill out the minutes at the 5, but the interior is going to have a much more vertical presence.

I get that those are two different things, but most freshmen are going to be behind in terms of understanding team defensive principles as well. If you also struggle to move your feet and stay in front, it compounds the problem.

As good as Bohannon, Cook, Pemsl, etc., were last year, remember how bad they looked at times defensively, especially early in the year? Fran really had no choice but to play those guys last year, but he will have other options on the interior, which is why I think Nunge and Garza will likely not see a ton of minutes this year.

Woody saw a lot of minutes as a freshman because we needed a post presence on D at that time, just like we did last year. Like that Woody's team, this one's D will get better dramatically with Kriener/Garza getting the majority of minutes at center.

Yes, team defense is a more advanced concept so clearly you need to be adequate in the simpler things first like one on one defense.

I am wondering if Nunge and Garza catch up to the speed of the game and over time see their minutes increase....we shall see....we have no idea, of course, what is going on in practice and how everybody is performing

The Europe trip is going to really be beneficial; let Garza and Nunge make mistakes there, watch video with coaches on what mistakes were made, and keep working at improving and get ready for the big non conference games and the B1G

The Gazette has a little article about Cook with a highlight video of his dunks.

http://www.thegazette.com/subject/s...-out-prime-time-league-with-emphasis-20170716

Cook appears to have significantly improved his handles. I wonder if he'll play a little small forward to offset his poor interior defense. If he's on the floor with one or two sweet shooting bigs, his lack of an outside shot wouldn't be much of a hindrance. A lineup of Bohannon, Moss, Cook, Garza, Kriener/Nunge/possibly Pemsl would have enough outside shooting to space the floor even with Cook at the 3. Plus, you get plenty of interior defense.

I take it you've never had to guard someone that is physically overpowering?

Remember this is PLT, no practices, no scouting reports. if someone has tree thrunks for legs and has 30lbs. on your long lean body, he's going to move you whereever he wants.

Here's an interesting part of that article:

Cook said it’s been beneficial for Iowa’s post players to have Nunge and fellow 6-11 freshman Luka Garza in practices. Going up against that kind of size is good preparation for the Big Ten Conference season.

Nunge said contending with 6-9 sophomore Ryan Kriener has been his biggest challenge in those practices.

“He’s got really good footwork,” Nunge said. “He can go by you and go up strong.”

Another adjustment for Nunge has been the deeper 3-point arc combined with bigger, faster defenders.

“Even the foot longer, it makes a difference,” Nunge said of the college arc. “The speed is probably the biggest adjustment, so sometimes you’ve got to get your shot off faster than you did in high school. People are contesting it and so it’s really hard to get used to. Summer is helping out a lot with that.”

Nunge has been putting up big point totals throughout PTL play. The games are just exhibitions, but it’s been a good entry point for college play, Nunge said.

“He knows how to get to the rim. He knows how to get his shots off,” Cook said.

“I think the fact that he’s this good now is scary. I can’t wait to see what he’s going to be like once the season starts.”

This is why I would temper expectations a bit for Nunge. While I think he has big time potential and will end up being a very good player, I don't think he's ready defensively at this point. If he can't guard, I don't see him getting a lot of minutes this year.
Why because we have so many great one on one defenders now? How was Cooks defense last season? Yes Jack has a lot to learn, but he's a smart kid, and he just needs to learn how to fit into the TEAMS concept of defense to be effective. I'm sure there's not much team D being played in the PTL. Also I'd bet Nunge will be a pretty big mismatch on the other end of the floor, so there's that as well.

Is it not always wise to temper expectations for every freshman? Cook is a great example. That is the biggest recruit to come Iowa's way in a long time. While Tyler was a very good freshman his game had some pretty big holes.

The compensation is, of course, Hawks do not need to count on the freshmen. This roster is pretty deep up front.

Couple of friend's that watched some PTL games told me that Kriener had really improved, which kind of echoes the information above. If that turns out to be true and Garza is even close to his PTL performances those minutes at 5 are going to be locked down for damn near 40 a game in every close game. By close I don't mean near 30&12 but capable of holding his own for 10-12 minutes a game, not making major mental lapses, scoring when the opportunity presents itself (no Woody misses on those layups) getting some rebounds and boxing out so Cook/Pemsyl and the Baer Cage can get some rebounds as well.

Nunge is really really skinny. Skinnier than the Ute and, as we know, the Ute got tossed around his first couple of years of B1G ball.

Can't wait for reports from Europe. Great chance to build for the season.
