*****Official 2023 NCAA tournament games thread*****

Maybe this has been asked already in this thread or elsewhere, but why tf was FAU a 9 seed?

FAU is on the brink of FF!

The excuse "we can't compete with Bluebloods story because they get all the 5 star talent" is fading.

Issue is it is now all about NIL and having a coach that can build a roster in Portal. Fran late to Portal game.

Lots of teams showing you don't need really tall players to win or even be physical around the basket. Houston-Miami game was a great example. I don't know if anyone playing on either team is more than 6-8, but the guys are incredibly strong and physical. Hawks need a couple of those guys to go with their shooters.

6'8 is enough height to be a big, but at 6'8 you need to have some muscle and be above the rim player. Rebraca was little light, decent athlete but definitely not high flyer. I'm not following don't "even need to be physical around the basket." The opposite is true...quickness, hops, muscle, physicality needed for rebounding/defense.

WE have PMAC at 6'9 and he lack strength/toughess. CMAC is below the rim guy. Murray was more a finesse guy..he's supposed to be a 3 and D guy at next level, not PF.

This year the Talent was NOT there to win for Iowa. Next year looks to be worse.

Is anyone else dreaming of the tournament being over so we can be done with the Barkley, Jackson, Nantz, etc commercials? It’s like almost begging for college football to be over to get away from the Fansville commercials.

Didn't have NIL until during the season this year and still pulled in Rebraca which was huge!

I was saying that you don't have to be tall to be physical around the basket. Maybe didn't word it very well. Fran needs to have some guys who are athletic, strong, and physical around the basket, and they don't have to be really tall. The freshman 4 they are bringing in, might be the closest thing Iowa has had recently. Perkins has a little of that when he is being aggressive. I was reacting to a few posters dissing some of the portal guys who weren't 6-10 or so.

Because until the tournament, they haven’t beaten ranked teams. FAU has only lost 3 games all year, but obviously could have beaten most teams from major conferences.

I like the New Jersey kid they recruited. That is one guy. Most of these teams seem to have 4 or 5 guys like that.

Braun seems beefy, but little bit of a below the rim guy. Mulvey will need to take a huge step forward. Watching these NCAA games, you need to have 3 or 4 athletes on the floor to to run down loose ball rebounds off missed 3's an at same time be able to compete in pain for man-sized rebounds. We don't have those guys. The guard talent for Iowa looks potentially solid but not deep....Dix, Bowen,Perkins is pretty good nucleus. We have some shooters. Hard to peg in PMAC---he's 6'9 but doesn't impact the game like a 6'9 guy should. Sandfort seems the better alternative, but Pmac will play a lot.

Iowa is not at the level of these sweet16 teams this year, and next year should be a less successful year.

Most teams that make the Sweet16 next year will probably be relying on portal guys. Fran not exactly setting the world on fire with portal acquisitions.

Fran doesn't have the necessary amount of open scholarships needed to rebuild a team like FAU's coach had. What players Iowa has on their roster is what he has to work with, like it or not, it's the reality that we have to deal with.

I count 10 scholly players on the roster for next year as it stands and that could be 9 if we lose one more.
That could mean 3-4 transfers plus the 4 frosh plus nimmers and Braun as newcomers to our playing roster.
So if Fran wanted to re-shape the roster he could have up to 10 new bodies to do it.
Now more realistically he probably adds 2 guys max from the portal.
If he somehow found 2 starters that would be 40% of the starting lineup right there.
We only have one returning starter so Fran does not have much of a choice...evolve or die.
