*****Official B1G Baseball Tournament Games Thread. #3 IOWA vs #1 Maryland, Sunday 2:00 PM CT, BTN*****

Iowa is 9-2 since the gambling story broke (resulting in 4 players being suspended).

This team could have become distracted, could have lost focus, and could have taken a tail spin.

Instead they moved forward, players are stepping up, and they are kicking ass.

Rick has done a HELLER of a job.
Rick uses his pitchers VERY well. Love that Whitlock comes in, doesn't throw faster then low 80's for his FB, but throws junk all over. That is how you use pitchers.

Rick needs a raise.

They just let a dude throw 117 pitches.

And he won't throw another pitch in a game for at least a week. He's gone 100+ multiple times this year. It's not like he was throwing 75-85 pitches and he added another 30 in a single outing. Yeah, it stretched him but only a tad.

Moreover, IU could have at least made a good faith argument that, given its RPI and a tournament championship, they should be given host consideration (personally, I don't think that it would have happened). There was far more on the line yesterday than what is now reasonably possible.

Other than a trophy for the case, what does IU really gain by winning 3 games in the next 2 days to play yet another on Sunday? What would the cost be?

From what I've seen this year, IU's HC is far too strategic to go scorched earth to get to Sunday.

My take is they did that to get to the semis with no losses knowing they won't use him again until the NCAAs. In other words use him as long as you can and not burn up others. When it was 4-1 seemed like the plan was working but Iowa go to the bullpen. I would agree that Indiana will be a bit cautious with a game today and then potentially tomorrow before even GETTING to a final when they may have to win two to take the BTT. That is a bunch of potential games in a few days.
1 yesterday
1 today...then if they win.....
2 tomorrow...if they keep winning...then
Either 1 or 2 day after

Edit,,,,,on the other hand Michigan has ZERO to lose. Going nowhere unless they win the BTT. You will most likely have a year to rest :):)

Morgan’s bullpen day would be Sunday. 30-40 pitches of availability. He’d start and pitch 2 innings.

Need him on regular and full rest for 2/3 game on 6/2.

Put me in “Path Of Least Resistance to Sunday” and “Pitching Conservation/Management” camps.

Michigan is that path of least resistance and, should Langenberg be effective and efficient and Iowa’s bats take down Michigan’s depleted pitching, Iowa could go Morgan for 2 and then hand ball to Savary on Sunday.

I want Iowa to win the B1G tournament but, like @GolfHacker1 , I’m staring hard at that Regional championship.
Yeah, if getting into the tournament were still a question, I’d say give me Indiana and the RPI bump.

Since that is no longer a concern, I’m with Aurora. Path of least resistance.

Is Indiana tanking deliberately? Trying to make Michigan run rule the game so that Indiana can rest some pitchers for the NCAAs?
I doubt that they are tanking deliberately (they've used two pitchers thus far who have started from time to time this year) but it sure would be nice if they could force Michigan to use up some more of its arms.

Michigan's Voit (Freshman) has thrown 76 pitches in 5 innings and you know damn well that they will stick with Voit as long as possible to save the pen for tomorrow's game(s). He's their regular 3rd baseman and, even though he's pitched in 18 games, he hasn't started a game all year. Hell, before today, he hadn't thrown more 3.1 innings in any outing. He's single-handedly saving their bullpen today.

Just by looking at UM's season stats, I'd expect that Iowa would see either Chase Allen (10 starts) or Jacob Denner (9 starts) tomorrow morning.

EDIT: Strike Denner from what I typed above. He pitched 3.2 innings against Illinois (53 pitches) on Wednesday. He's not starting tomorrow morning. Would have to be Chase Allen.

EDIT 2: Indiana threatening to put some runs on the board in T6. Voit can't have any gas left in his tank. 90 pitches thrown.

Denner threw 53 pitches Wednesday. My guess is Allen.

Michigan just replaced Voit with Hirajli. Iowa roughed him up pretty good on Tuesday.

Thank god we are in the winner's bracket and don't have the worries that Mchigan (likely) will have.

Who do you go with to try to win the first game tomorrow? You win that game, then who do you have left? Win that one? One more game to go!

Good luck.

Denner now pitching for Michigan. An indication of how thin their pitching may be?

EDIT: He has thrown 23 pitches thus far today. I cannot imagine that he's available tomorrow. Maybe an inning at the most if need be . . . and in the second game?

Michigan is torching Indiana's pitching today. 15-36 at the plate including 11-25 with runners on base. Ouch.

EDIT: Now 18-41; 13-29. Double ouch.

For those still looking at RPI . . . IU's loss today likely drops them to just below Iowa on the RPI ladder. Iowa could end up being the team in the B1G with the best RPI.

Also, a Nebraska win over MSU would also give Iowa 3 more Q2 wins.

Chalk these up in the "How is Iowa seeded and to what Regional will they be assigned" category.
