****Official Cubs 2015 Thread****

There would be a 1-game playoff for the division. Interestingly, since Pittsburgh has won 10 of 17 so far against STL this season and they're lined up to play a series now, the only way Pittsburgh and STL end up tied is if Pittsburgh wins the season series.....so the one-game playoff would be in Pittsburgh.

From MLB.com:

Two-Club Tie for Division Championship and Wild Card: One tiebreak game will be played to determine the Division Champion. The loser of the game will be declared a Wild Card. Home field advantage will be determined by the rules above for a two-team tiebreaker.

Honestly, I am fine with losing to the Pirates again tomorrow. I want Pittsburgh to beat out STL for the division. Would rather face Michael Wacha in one game playoff than Garritt Cole.
I would like this to happen as well but for some reason Arietta doesn't lose right now... and he has a Cy Young to win. The Pirates winning the division with the way they are playing and the way the Cards are playing right now still isn't out of the realm of possibility. It starts tonight in Pittsburgh!

Yikes for Cards fans. They've lost two good players in the last few days. Martinez and Piscotty. If you haven't seen the brutal collision Piscotty had with Bourjos you soon will on ESPN. I don't see Piscotty playing soon.

Hate seeing guys get injured but this may lose me money. I'm in the fantasy baseball championship in my league and he is in my OF. Hope for his health (and my wallet) it isn't as serious as it looks.

Damn, that Piscotty play was scary. Hope he's ok. Any word on his condition?

Dear God how are they going to work in all this talent next season? And, what an impressive turnaround by Starlin Castro since he was relieved of his job as everyday SS. He's played exceptional defense at 2nd, and at SS when he spells Russell. He's hit extremely well since he was moved out of his starting SS role.

Don't forget, they have another stud SS coming up in another year or two. Gleyber Torres. Most likely in the 2017 range.

A month ago, people were talking about Castro as a giveaway. He's shown a ton of maturity team spirit in this run. He still may get dealt, but he'll command value this offseason if he is dealt.

Also, if you'd have told me at the start of the season that Lester would go 11-12, I certainly would not have picked 93 or more wins.

Torres projects to 2nd from what I've read. He had an impressive season in South Bend, and richly deserved his promotion to Myrtle Beach for the playoffs.
I think Joe Maddon has answered my question the last two nights. Bryant has played some time at 1B. Javy Baez got an inning there tonight. Schwarber was given a try in RF for a few innings tonight. I don't see a future for Schwarber behind the plate, but he would be an impressive bat to move around the diamond if in two years he's splitting time with Willson Contreras. I don't think it make sense to replace Fowler with anything other than a one year guy for next year with Almora coming off of a solid season, and projecting for a full year at AAA. It will be interesting to see if the Cubs offer Fowler a QO in the hopes of attaining a draft pick.

The Chicago Cubs scored a major victory Wednesday in the organization's long-running battle with the nearby Wrigley rooftop businesses when a federal judge dismissed a lawsuit brought against the team by two of the businesses on Sheffield Avenue.

U.S. District Judge Virginia Kendall dismissed all nine counts within the suit filed in January by Skybox on Sheffield and Lakeview Baseball Club. Among their allegations were that the team had violated its decade-old revenue-sharing agreement and that the 2,250-square-foot right field video board would block their views into the historic stadium and destroy their businesses.

The dispute, and legal sparring, had centered on the interpretation of the contract in which the Cubs receive 17 percent of the rooftops' annual revenue in exchange for unblocked views into the ballpark. The contract predates the Ricketts family ownership of the team but was written by some current team employees, including the president of business operations, Crane Kenney.

But Kendall did not side with the rooftops in their interpretation of a key sentence within the contract — one dealing with "any expansion" of Wrigley Field. She wrote that the new video board installed in Wrigley met the definition of expansion. She also wrote that the sign was permitted because a government body had granted its approval, another provision outlined in the agreement.

The Commission on Chicago Landmarks and the City Council have signed off on every aspect of the stadium's renovation over the rooftop owners' objections.

The rooftop businesses had argued that signs aren't an expansion of the ballpark, and that the contract should be weighed against the circumstances under which it was developed, which was for the Wrigley bleacher expansion from 2005.

Wednesday's ruling was the first significant action in the case since April, when Kendall denied the preliminary injunction request. The Cubs asked the suit be dismissed in February.

Kendall's ruling on Wednesday echoed her denial for preliminary injunction by the two businesses — controlled by Edward McCarthy — to halt the renovations of Wrigley Field. At that time, Kendall wrote that the businesses had not shown that the Cubs violated the terms of the agreement or that the video board would lead to the businesses closing.

She also was not swayed by allegations that the Cubs engaged in a monopoly, citing Major League Baseball's anti-trust exemption, long upheld by the Supreme Court, and that the Cubs cannot be limited in how they distribute their product. Finally, Kendall dismissed the allegations that Cubs Chairman Tom Ricketts defamed the rooftop businesses from comments he made at a Cubs Convention.

"We are very pleased with the court's decisive ruling today," Kenney said in a statement. "Judge Kendall's opinion confirms the bleacher expansion does not violate our rooftop agreements, as we have maintained from the outset. We also appreciate that with this chapter closed, everyone's focus can continue to be on the field, where it belongs."

Attorneys for the rooftops, and McCarthy, could not be reached for comment.

Tension has long marked the relationship between the Cubs and rooftops lining Waveland and Sheffield avenues. In fact, the 2004 agreement serves as the settlement between the rooftops and the team (then-owned by Tribune Co.), which sued for copyright infringement.

But rancor grew after the Ricketts family purchased the team in 2009. The Ricketts family made offers to buy all of the rooftop businesses shortly after buying the team, according to court records in the case dismissed Wednesday.

The Ricketts has since acquired six rooftop businesses — all this year — as part of a campaign by Chairman Tom Ricketts to gain further control of the neighborhood streets surrounding the historic ballpark.

Besides McCarthy's rooftop businesses, the only one along Sheffield without any Ricketts' investment or ownership stakes is Murphy's Rooftop, at the intersection of Sheffield and Waveland.

The decision, which comes two days after the last home game at Wrigley Field, could spell the end for the rooftops opposing the Ricketts' efforts to renovate Wrigley or block any of their views. McCarthy's rooftop businesses are the only ones to have challenged the team's interpretation of the contract in court.

The roof top owners screwed themselves. They should have taken the initial offers. Now they'll get less money after racking up lawyers bills and throwing money at Tom Tunney.

Yep. A big part of their problem was suing over things that Cubs did that were specifically discussed in the contract signed between the Cubs and rooftops.

Let's see, it says the Cubs can do this if it is approved by the city, they did this, it was approved by the city, so lets sue them because they did this. Not smart.

Hard to believe that the Cubs would have such a meaningful game on the last day of the season. I'll keep one eye on the Reds / Pirates score, too.

Also hard to believe they could win 97 games and finish third in their division. It is too bad either the Cubs or the Pirates are done Wednesday.

That extra season of control is huge but I think the Cubs win the central if Bryant is on the team all year. Worst case they are hosting the wild card game.

They lost I think 3 games before he was called up. They are 5 games behind the Cards in the loss column.

You might be right, I was thinking they were 4-4 when he was called up but they obviously would have been undefeated with him. ;)

I doubt anyone was thinking back in April this team was going to win 90 games this year, let alone the 100+ it would take to win the division. I figured they would be better and looked forward to seeing the young players, but this season has far exceeded my expectations. Heck, in April I was not even considering the impact we have seen from Russell and Schwarber.

Imagine if there wasn't a 2nd wild card team. 3rd best record in the MLB would've been left out of the playoffs. Would've been a heartbreaking last day.

I really can't wait until Wednesday. If they lose, I'll be disappointed in the outcome and I may even grouse for a day or two if they lose a game they shouldn't, but this season was really special and really everything from here forward is just a bonus I wasn't expecting.

The Cubs went 5-3 without Kris Bryant. He was called up on April 17th.

Pork shoulder is in the crock pot slowly reducing to greatness. I'll get store bought cole slaw and have some raw veggies and chips on hand. There will be no interruptions during the game for children's homework or anything else. I am ready to go.

I have 3 boys, ages 11, 8 and 4. My 11 is a certified baseball nut. The 8 loves the idea of it. The 4 will be in bed safely before first pitch and it'll be my first chance to watch postseason Cubs baseball with my boys. I'm really looking forward to it. The 8 won't make it past the 6th inning, probably, but the 11 is ready. Game face was on this morning after playing in his own game last night.

What is everyone's prediction for the lineup tonight?

Fowler CF
Jackson LF
Rizzo 1B
Bryant RF
Castro 2B
Montero C
LaStella 3B
Arrieta P
Russell 2B

Obviously meant SS for Russell.

And after further thought, switch Rizzo and Bryant in the order. I could also see them wanting to get Schwarber's bat in the lineup and putting him in right, and having Bryant replace Jackson in left field. So many possibilities, didn't even mention Coghlan, Baez, or Soler.

I think Schwarber will start. He's been really bad coming off the bench, so if you're not going to start him, there's not much point to him at all. I like your lineup, though. I'd go this way:

Fowler CF
Schwarber LF
Rizzo 1B
Bryant 3B
Jackson RF
Castro 2B
Montero C
Arrieta P
Russell SS
