*****Official Cubs 2019 thread*****

What measures are you using to determine mediocre?
Take out that 14-7 record in his best year( the year he got CY votes) and he's got a career record of 52-51 with a 3.5 ERA. That's the definition of average/mediocre. He's certainly not the only MLB player that capitalized on one good season. It's a very big reason why player salaries are so outrageous.

This started out as my comparison to some snarky comment about Montgomery now being in the AL. Gray's stats should improve as he pitches less games against teams with the DH. Typically, all pitchers in the NL would have better ERAs. In Montgomery's case... his results should be better because he no longer has the albatross of Joe Maddon around his neck. JM is a pitcher's worst nightmare.

What are you talking about? He had four good years in Oakland and one dud.
LOL!:p Counting his best season, he had a career mark of 44-36. I guess most people have a different interpretation of "good". Take out that 2015 season(14-7), he's 30-29.

But I agree he'll be good in the NL Central facing that unmurderer's row.

Nobody under the age of 80 cares about pitching win/loss records.

You'd obviously much rather have Eduardo Rodriguez and Max Fried over Max Scherzer and Jacob DeGrom since wins and losses are such an important way to gauge the success of a pitcher.
Scherzer's career record is 168-87 . deGrom is 62-48.

WTF is wrong with you? Asking for a friend.

Odd that 3.5 is about.5 to .75 better than the average in those time frames. Does that make him better than average?

All that matters is WINS, that's how you measure great pitchers. Just like everyone knows RBIs is the best way to measure great hitters. Mitch has no use for any other stats that you nerds make up.

Is it total wins or win %? Staying away from whip and war

All this because I had to point out that a certain pitcher is average.

Someone sure likes to pick nits!

A combination of the two obviously, but mostly winning percentage, but you still need a lot of wins. The great pitchers are the ones who can gut out a 9-8 win with a line of 5 IP, 6 ER. They inspire the offense to pick them up. It's poor leadership to lose a 1-0 or 2-1 game, obviously that reflects on how much your teammates want to win for you.

sure mitch!

He's on pace for about 5 WAR, that's all-star level but not MVP level. I would say that's really good, but not great. When he was putting up 7.5 WAR in 2016, that was a great year.

Javy's at 4.6 WAR already, Yelich is at 6.0, Bellinger at 7.6. I just have a hard time calling this season from Bryant a great one.

I won't quibble with that as long that's not the justification used to decide he has to be traded for a so-so package in the offseason. I think the key with KB is health. If healthy, he can still be the guy who went on a 4-year run of college POY, MiLB POY, ROY, MVP.

Oh I wouldn't want to trade him. I hesitate to say I would never trade him, because there's always a package that makes it worth it, but I would only want to move him if some team makes an insane offer for him.

His oWar is as good as any other year but his defense has been much worse and is actually a negative now. Still wouldn’t trade him for anyone not named mike trout.

There isn't anyone that I'd put on a "no trade" list, but some guys are obviously going to be really expensive.

Here's my take on Bryant:

1. Those who want to trade him now are nuts.
2. I'd bet we have seen his best season. He has never been able to match up his power (2015-2016) with plate discipline (2017-2019).
3. I have no interest in signing him to a mega deal after the 2021 season, unless he's gets back to being a 6-8 WAR player. He'll be 30 years old to start that following season with his best days behind him. Plus, I don't see the club being very good in 2021 (especially with their horrible farm system), and that may be the year to entertain a deadline deal for him if the haul is worth it.
