*****Official Cubs 2019 thread*****

Good question. A 6 run lead in the 7th and you pull a reliever with 2 outs and a man on? Not a good way to show confidence in your bullpen if you're going with matchups in that situation.

No wonder bullpens get overused.
As I’ve said before to paraphrase Blazing Saddles, Joe Maddon has killed more arms than Cecil B. DeMille.
7 run lead and he is chewing through the bullpen.

LuCroy had 2 "catcher's interferences" tonight?

Is that an MLB record for a game?

These kind of infractions seem so rare.

You're taking bleacher report over fangraphs for baseball knowledge? This explains so much LOL
We pick news sources that back our arguments.

That's how things work. In regards to the farm system... there's a reason the Cubs didn't improve at the deadline... they have no bait. That's how they ended up with guys like David Phelps and why they grasp at straws with guys like Cargo/Lucroy. At this point, the Castellanos pickup looks pretty good. Gets Einstein's batting average up to about .200.

He's just trying to keep it competitive for the rest of the sport. If he was batting much higher the Yankees and Dodgers would have to combine to compete. An average below .200 gets a lead in the division and that is without playing the bottom swill that runs through the AL.

Horrible night. Lots of 1st & 3rd and bases loaded with no outs and no results. Baseball can be maddening. The wins and loses streaks are tough to compartmentalize. When you look back at the whole season it all makes since but on a game by game or week by week basis it’s tough.

The only sport more frustrating to me is basketball. The streaks in basketball are all within one game and can be frustrating as anything else in my life. You can be up 15 and in 5 minutes be down 5. I throw more objects at walls during basketball than any other sport.

Mike Montgomery with 7 shutout innings and 12 Ks tonight for KC. Obviously moving to the easier AL has helped him.
And Sonny Gray couldn't get anyone out pitching for the Yankees, but he seems to be flourishing in the NL Central.

Amazing, huh?

Sonny Gray is a stud but couldn't handle New York everyone who didn't trade for him was stupid! He was made for medium to small markets.

The same Sonny Gray who was 3rd in the AL Cy Young voting in 2015? Looks like he did ok in that league.

Check his stats. He was pretty much a "flash in the pan" in Oakland. His stats as a Yankee were average, at best.

There are probably hundreds of players that parlay 1 good year into a nice contract and are mediocre the rest of their careers. Gray is one of those guys to this point.

But you already knew that.

Try again.

With your description, doesn't sound like he would be a candidate to start any high pressure playoff game in the post season.

Calling everyone "stupid for not trading for him" is well... kind of stupid.

What are you talking about? He had four good years in Oakland and one dud.

What measures are you using to determine mediocre?

This team is bi-polar. It's really starting to piss me off.
Isn't motivating the team on game day the job of the manager? This road loss thing isn't on the players or Jeb/Theo, it all on Joe. He should be fired for it now.

He’s so good at motivating them at home though. Obviously Joe is just saving all his best tricks to motivate the guys at Wrigley.

Rowan Wick was excellent today. He has been a pleasant surprise this season. He stepped up and took two innings off the books for the bullpen today. And, Strop was fairly efficient and free of drama in the 9th.
