*****Official Cubs 2019 thread*****

He's playing on a winner now. The Cole Hammels effect.
I don't know if it's ever been proven, but many people believe that looming FA somehow makes players better. They become more focused or something.

He's playing on a winner now.

I seem to recall there was a bit of a tiff between him and management this summer. Something about him refusing to switch positions.

I do tend to believe though that going from arguably one of the 2-3 worst run franchises to the Cubs (regardless of one's opinions of the Cubs organization currently) had to provide a bit of a goose to his "give a shit" levels.

He's playing in games that mean something. Not too sure about recent Tigers seasons, but I'd have to believe it's been awhile for him.

For those of you who are watching along with me tonight, can anyone explain the difference in stats by Castellanos they just showed? His exit velocity is up 2 mph. Stats like balls in play and hard hit balls are both up 10 percent. I think that is what they showed. I guess the what isn't as important, as the why? We aren't simply talking about Wrigley being a friendlier park, they were showing stats that are related to just laying the bat on the ball, not anything related to shorter fences than Comerica, or summer breezes blowing out of Wrigley.

It makes me think he wasn’t happy in Detroit. But then again who would he :D

Playing on a team going nowhere and then traded to a first place winning organization would certainly light my fire.

Yu looked fantastic tonight. He did have a different look in his eyes, the look of a guy ready to compete. Came out like an ace ready to deal and stop a losing streak.

The team played loose. Loved the approach at the plate.

Need this team to keep playing like this.

This is a big shift for you. Almost an acknowledgement that Theo and company have a mess on their hands and might not be the guys to fix it.

With all of the pre-arb extensions signed, opportunities to improve in free agency are fewer and far between. This makes drafting/development all the more important, and we have seen that the incompetent Jason McLeod can't do a thing unless he gets top picks via tanking.

I've not shied away from there being things to fix. This recent stretch has only exemplified that.

Also, when you get right down to it, I'm a Cub fan. I root for the Cubs, not the Epsteins, Hoyers, KBs or Javies (it's close, I'm almost there).

If we go transaction by transaction, I'll stand by a lot of Theo's moves...but he's had some killers that have had a lot of impact.

This is how bad things are for the Brewers.

Yadi hits a 2 run foul pole homer to take a 3-1 lead. It immediately starts raining. Domed stadium, no problem, right?

The roof was open. Rain delay.

NICE TRY.

While it could have been sour grapes as they beat the Cubs in Game 163 for the NL Central, I have always contended that the 2018 Brewers are one of the flukiest teams I have ever seen.

While “bullpenning” works in a short playoff series, it is not sustainable over a 162 game haul. Starters that can throw 180-200 innings are still extremely valuable, and the Brewers have none of those guys.

They rode Hader, Jeffress, and Knebel into the ground. Hader hasn’t been as good, Jeffress has been hurt/bad, and Knebel has been out all year.

Why they did not go grab a couple of starters this off-season is a mystery.

The 38 year old Ben Zobrist will return this Saturday
after an almost 4 month unpaid personal leave. He
is expected to platoon at 2B as he leads the Cub
charge for the playoffs.

The Cubs need to just stick with Russell and Baez up the middle. Let Happ and Zo find at bats somewhere else.

Kyle Schwarber is the best .229 hitter in MLB. With
that batting average he has 31 home runs and 72
runs batted in.

Jorge Soler of the Kansas City Royals is hitting .251.
With that batting average he has 36 home runs and
92 runs batted in. This guy is having a career year.

Bottom Line: With one month to go, Soler could hit
40 home runs and drive in 100 runs.

Kris Bryant has only 26 home runs with his 64 runs batted in.

Bottom Line: Schwarber and Soler are better than Kris Bryant.

Well, his career isn't exactly long, but, sure.
As we just heard during the Cubs broadcast as they attempt to fill in the time, if Soler hits 40 homers, he will be the very first Royal to do so. Pretty weird stat that no Royal has hit 40 in a season, yet.

George Brett hit for average and won some batting
titles. I would guess that he must have hit 35 home
runs once.

Close: career high of 30 homers, though he’s part of a select group to hit 20+ homers, doubles and triples in a single season.
Also, I think they've brought in the walls twice at Kaufman. It played huge for decades. Still, it is weird that in the juicer era nobody hit 40.
