*****Official Cubs 2019 thread*****

Nico Hoerner and Miguel Amaya will play in the AFL this season. Hoerner missed two months of the season, so it makes sense for him to go to Arizona. I am a little surprised about Amaya. He will have played 100 games at catcher, and he has advanced considerably. That is a minor quibble, I know.
Ehrich Uelman will throw along with lefty Jordan Minch and Keegan Thompson, who missed the bulk of the season due to injury.

Sometimes I think Maddon wants to get fired. Fresh off of a 10 run outburst, Maddon will sit Schwarber in LF in favor of Tony Kemp. Rizzo's back is still bothering him, so Caratini gets a start at 1B and Lucroy is behind the plate. I'd rather see Caratini catching and Happ at 1B. But, hey, I'm just some internet poster.
Theo needs to figure out what he wants to do with Rizzo. You can only back date a trip to the IL so many days, and I think Rizzo is already past that. 3 days, maybe?

you just now figuring out the dude is a moron? :)

have to wonder how much money rizzos back is gonna cost him.
hasn't missed a ton of games because of it, but as he ages I imagine he'll be missing more and more because of it.

This will probably cost him a lot. He will still have great overall numbers, but he is 30, and once again having back issues. Those don't get better after age 30. Is it a muscle issue? Is he structural? He signed a contract that has two team options (I think), at the tail end of it. If you are the Cubs, do you let those kick in after 2020 when he's missing a couple of weeks every year? I think those two option years are for about $15 per year.

he'll need a pretty serious injury for the cubs not to pickup those options.

at least I would think so :)

This aged well. That Caratini guy did alright tonight.

I guess Madden knew what he was doing tonight.

Why do you say that? I wanted Caratini at catcher. I didn't say he shouldn't play. Maddon's love affair with Kemp confuses me. Kemp is the guy I said shouldn't be starting.

If Kemp should never start, then why is he on the roster? Theo is the one that went out and got him. And Caratini can’t catch every night, i would say LeCroy and Lester worked well tonight and keeping Caratini’s bat in the lineup made off

I say that because everyone accuses Maddon for being incompetent for everything that goes wrong even when it’s not his fault. Tonight worked out but do you give him praise? Of course not.

It all boils down to the players executing and the pitchers throwing good strikes. It’s on them, not Maddon. But next game we lose you’ll jump all over Maddon for screwing things up.

Unless his back gets worse from here, I take the options. His cost is $14.5M and with the production he's been giving, he's worth more than $14.5M. I'd focus on the roster flexibility to absorb him missing a month and just roll forward. The Cubs are going to have to spend enough on other guys to make him a bargain worth keeping.....if his back deteriorates, each of the next two years have $2M buyouts, so there's not much downside for the Cubs.

In fairness, Kemp is much better than Descalso.

True. But so is my 10 year old son.

In all fairness, @lucas80 isn't a huge Maddon critic. Baseball is a weird game sometimes. I had similar thoughts about the lineup, but was too busy at the time to post. Being realistic, sometimes the manager makes all the right calls and loses and sometimes he makes all the wrong calls and wins. I'm not saying Maddon made the wrong calls, but I would have opted for guys like Happ or Schwarber in the lineup instead of Kemp just for their power potential.....but it's one of 162 and they got the W, so I'm very happy.

I just think it's dumb when people criticize managers for not putting out their best lineup or running out the best reliever in every situation. You have to take a long view. Guys need nights off, teams put out get away lineups that aren't close to their best chance of winning sometimes because you just can't go all out every game over a 162 season and not run your guys into the ground. You can't throw your best set up guy night and night out and expect him to have anything left come late summer. Througout his time here Maddon has been great at having his teams take off in Aug and Sep. I think Maddon is an extremely good manager and will be sorely missed once the year is over.

I agree with you on position players. He clearly loves flexibility and he uses that to keep guys fresh. He's maybe ridden Rizzo a little too hard at times, but other than that, he keeps guys fresh.

If you look at bullpen usage, I think that's been a problem for a while. Some could just be bad luck, but even going back to 2016, there's a pretty firm track record of some of his best arms struggling with injury down the stretch. It's hit Strop multiple times, Rondon, Edwards, Cishek, etc.

Ben Zobrist remains on schedule to return to the Cubs Sunday when rosters expand, though when he’ll start a game is up in the air.

The Cubs are set to face a left-hander in Brewers starter Gio Gonzalez on Sunday and then two left-handers in Justus Sheffield and Felix Hernandez Monday and Tuesday in the upcoming series against the Mariners.

“It’s not a really groovy time for him, the way he’s coming back, regarding the pitching matchups,” manager Joe Maddon said. “So we’ll see.”

The Cubs already have said the switch-hitting Zobrist will not play every day.

Paid Post What Is This?
Maddon didn’t know whether Zobrist would want to address his teammates as a unit Sunday, but said: “I’m hoping it’s a normal day.”

Zobrist hasn’t spoken since leaving the team in May for family reasons after he and his wife, Julianna, filed for divorce. He declined to do interviews while rehabbing in the minors, and has been working at his home in Nashville, Tenn., this week while preparing for his return to the Cubs.

There likely will be a lot of focus on Zobrist’s return from Cubs fans and the media. How the Cubs plan on handling the moment is uncertain.

“I trust Zo in a moment like that,” Maddon said. “How could you not? I’m sure he’s going to handle it really, really well. And I don’t think the players are going to be that impacted just because of who he is and how he comports. They’ll support him. We’ll support him. We understand the fact people are going to want to hear from him a bit.

“But I have so much faith literally in how he’s going to handle the whole thing. I’m sure he’ll talk, and it will be over.”

But none of these guys are all that high in usage rate when compared to the rest of baseball, he's never been a guy who rides the same guys over and over. But he needs to throw someone out there. This is like the whole Morrow thing, to me its a front office problem if you're giving a manager a closer who can't throw more than two days in a row, can't ever go more than a inning, comes with all these restrictions. In the first half of last season, the Cubs led the NL in bullpen innings pitched but had no individual reliever in like the top 40 in innings pitched, that's nearly impossible to do, while still being effective.

I don't entirely disagree with you, but I do think he is better with position players than relievers and I think he hasn't adjusted well enough to guys that establish some patterns.
