*****Official Cubs 2019 thread*****

A couple of thoughts:

1. The at-bats by Contreras and Schwarber in the 9th were atrocious. Contreras is the most physically-gifted catcher in MLB, but is still a total spaz. This leads to being the worst framer in MLB, and terrible showings in big spots at the plate. Schwarber is what he is at this point - a "slugger" and not a "hitter."

2. Big start for Darvish tonight. There will be no built-in excuses for him if he does not perform.
You can't really blame Kyle for getting called out on ball 4. However, I do agree....he'll never be what we all hoped imo.
Willy gets a pass so far, at least to me :)

I don't recall ever seeing a guy besides Darvish that can consistently throw 94-95 mph be so afraid of his fastball.

Willson Contreras has hit 6 HRs this year after only hitting 10 all of last year. I think he has rediscovered the stroke he had in 2017 before he got hurt that year.

He is on a pace for 48 this year. That would break Johnny Bench's single season record of 45 for a catcher I believe. Long way to go though. I'm just glad to see that he is hitting the ball again.

And he hustled his way to second last night, and got the Cubs out of a double play. After the review the Cubs scored a run. That means a lot to the team.

this might surprise you but there are some pretty racist folks out there
Sigh…
I know, but usually they hide under rocks or are prime time talent on Fox. Only the dumbest ones use social media directly at someone. That's kind of traceable.

Every time the Cubs play the Marlins I get a little frustrated that the Cubs didn't get Christian Yelich. I know, it's hard to figure out what everyone was asking for, and who was involved, but the Marlins were openly shopping everyone they could in the 2017 offseason. You can't tell me the Cubs could not have put together a better haul than what the Marlins accepted. Supposedly their premium was on high talent, lower in the system guys who'd be ready in a few years.
Lewis Brinson is going to be a bust. The other three players the Marlins received still have a shot.

For several years I’ve watched and admired him, and this year he looks different; like he doesn’t care.

He’s just pitching shitty this year and needs to get his head out of his wallet.

He looks exactly the same whether he's throwing a no-hitter. It's who he is. You won't see emotion pretty much ever, and that's OK.

Well you wouldn't want to give up a guy like Almora for Yelich, extra base hits are extremely overrated anyway.

Driving to work today I heard Mully on the Score describe Kyle Schwarber as Paul Bunyan. More myth than man. It’s trending that way. Probably hard to win in 2016 without him, and he hits some incredible homers, but he is a 3-4 game a week player. Too many holes in his swing.

If only we traded him instead of torres.
At least he is finally hitting where he should be!

when the hell is jhey gonna get his shot at lead off? Too fast I guess.....

Good effort. The Cubs are back to within a game of .500, and get a day off before facing the DBacks in another stadium with a lot of Cubs fans in attendance.

I have been wondering the same thing of late. To my embarrassment, I suggested trading Javy in this thread at one point (for cost-controlled pitching) as I was not convinced his offensive production would touch league average (this is 100 wRC+, Javy was about 95 wRC+ for his career at that point). Since that time, he has gone from one of the most exciting players in the game to one of the best players in the game. He is good-to-great at everything except drawing walks.

Two things have stood out to me: his ability to improve his at-bats throughout a game, and his power to all fields.

At worst, Javy is the Cubs' second best player as he has clearly passed Rizzo. Despite his bad start, Bryant's body of work is better than Javy's. We also need to remember that Javy's approach hasn't him at risk for some bad slumps.

Regardless, Javy has become a special player before our eyes.

Anyone who thinks Bryant is better than Javy at this point needs to watch more Cubs game. It's not even close at this point.

The Cubs did what they had to......They swept the
Marlins. Now with some needed confidence they
are ready to play 3 games against the Dodgers next
week.

Regarding Yelich...the story I've read/heard is the Marlins wanted to keep him all long and didn't decide to get rid of him until right before the trade went down. Many clubs had pestered Miami offering up trades galore for weeks and were told no - so they backed off.

Milwaukee however didn't. They kept at it and just happened to be in the right place and right time to pull the trade off when Jeter etc changed their mind.

I know it seems like Milwaukee "stole" him considering what they gave up - but I don't believe anybody really felt Yelich would turn into what he produced last year. Naturally talented, sure. But the jury was still kinda out on him ever really fulfilling what people thought he could become - which is why the offers leading up weren't overwhelming enough for Miami to pull the trigger when he wasn't being actively shopped.

Teams were still a bit wary of him. LOVED his contract of course, but I doubt many thought he'd suddenly turn into an MVP. So, like how St. Louis and the Yankees "stole" Ozuna and Stanton away from them, teams mostly low-balled Miami.

I'm curious just how comparable to 2018 his numbers will look at the end of this year. He can't play St. Louis every game (he hasn't lit up anybody else they've played so far), and St. Louis has a staff that is poorly constructed for a lefty heavy lineup like Milwaukee can put out there.

It'll be interesting to see unfold as the season progresses.

Carlos Zambrano was on with David Kaplan tonight, and he is making a comeback. He is playing in an independent league with a team based in Rosemont. He said he is hitting the lower 90s with his fastball, and wants to return to MLB as a reliever. As hard as it is to believe he is only 37 years old.
Who knows if he’ll make it, he was fundamentally healthy throughout his career, and many paitchers are effective into this age range.

Cubs have a tough decision to make with Addison Russell available in a week or so. I think he is allowed to start playing in minor league games next week.
