They just announced the passing of Scott Sanderson. Uggh. Pretty damn young. He holds a really special place in my fan heart because even though I was born a Cubs fan, he was part of the 1984 team that made being a Cubs fan fun.

Damn, I hadnt heard that. I loved his curveball.

Scott Sanderson, a 1974 Glenbrook North graduate who helped the Cubs win two division championships and spent a season with the White Sox during a 19-year career, died Thursday. He was 62.

An official at Conway Farms Golf Club, where Sanderson was a longtime member, confirmed the death. A cause of death was not immediately known.

Sanderson compiled a 163-143 record with a 3.84 ERA and 1.26 WHIP in 472 appearances (407 starts) with seven teams from 1978-96. The 6-foot-5, 195-pound right-hander was a third-round draft pick by the Expos out of Vanderbilt in 1977, was promoted to the majors at age 21 after only 28 minor-league appearances and spent the first six seasons of his career in Montreal. The Cubs acquired him in a three-team trade in December 1983, and he spent the next six seasons with the North Siders.

Sanderson went 8-5 with a 3.14 ERA in 24 starts in 1984, helping the Cubs win the National League East Division to break a 38-year playoff drought. In 1989, he went 11-9 in 37 appearances (23 starts) as the Cubs won their second East title in six years.

Athletics (1990), Yankees (1991-92), Angels (1993), Giants (1993), White Sox (1994) and Angels again (1995-96).

In his one season on the South Side, he went 8-4 with a 5.09 ERA as the fifth starter. The Sox were in first place in the American League Central at 67-46 before the players’ strike that started Aug. 12 ended the season.

Sanderson made his only All-Star appearance for the Yankees in 1991 and finished 16-10 with a 3.81 ERA that season.

He made two other postseason appearances: with the Expos in 1981 and A’s in 1990. He made two relief appearances in the 1990 World Series when the A’s were swept by the Reds.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon, who coached for the Angels from 1994 to 2005, said Thursday that Sanderson was “thoughtful, kind. Just a wonderful man.”

After he retired from baseball, Sanderson worked as an agent, representing players such as Josh Beckett, Josh Hamilton and Todd Helton.

He was a longtime Northbrook and Lake Forest resident. He led Glenbrook North to the IHSA baseball state championship in 1974.

Two fantastic starts in a row by Quintana and Hamels.

I am probably one of three hardest people on Yu Darvish in this thread, but on the flip side, I have more confidence in Jose Quintana than most. Sure, the trade for him may have been an overpay, but he was very solid in 2017 and was very good from 2013-2016. There is no dip in his velocity, no obvious injury concerns, and he worked hard on his changeup this offseason, which will be the key for him. Unlike Yu Darvish, he does not appear to have mental toughness issues, and I thought he pitched well in the one-game playoff last year.

While the bullpen was blamed for seemingly everything the first week, the starters performing is far more important.

I'll get on the Quintana Train when he strings together 8 out of 10 quality starts against good competition. That was a weak Pirates team. True, the conditions were tough, but he needs to show a lot more. He's been a five inning pitcher for most of his time with the Cubs. The only playoff game I've ever been to was in 2017 against the Nationals at Wrigley, and he was awesome. He needs to be awesome a lot more.

Hamels was exceptional today. He commanded the outside corner, busted guys inside when needed, and owned the lower part of the zone on a day when balls could have gone screaming out of the park.

So glad the Cubs signed Hendricks to that 4 year extension.

God, he’s pitching shitty. Bases loaded hit to a guy 0 for his last 22.
Someday I’d like to watch a game with you. You’re negative... man. Mellow out.

Gave up a hit in the first to a guy batting .150, followed in the 2nd by a guy approaching Chris Davis levels.

He’s not pitching well at all.

He needs to get his act together.
by your logic, I guess that bum rizzo and his sub 200 avg is the worst hitter on the team ay?

Nope. Happened last year and he turned out just fine.

Hendricks just got a huge contract extension and now is pitching like he has nothing to work for anymore.

He looks like he doesn’t even care that he’s pitching crappy.
Have you ever watched Kyle pitch before this year?

I mean, seriously......

LMFAO

Rizzo, Bryant, and Schwarber are all hitting at .205 or
less. They need to have productive hits and drive in
some runs. Someone needs to motivate that trio and
do it soon.

I'm not one of those slaves to statistics like some of you guys, but, 23 LOB is bad, right?

No baseball today. At least they gave me time to figure out something to do this afternoon.
Yep, they called it plenty early. Hopefully the were able to get on a jet and depart on their road trip early. Also, the snow out allowed the Cubs to skip Chatwood's start.

We get Darvish at night in warm weather against a crappy team. That raises the odds for him.
40:60?

I actually hope he does well. It's hard to believe that he has only won one game for the Cubs in over a year now.

A couple of thoughts:

1. The at-bats by Contreras and Schwarber in the 9th were atrocious. Contreras is the most physically-gifted catcher in MLB, but is still a total spaz. This leads to being the worst framer in MLB, and terrible showings in big spots at the plate. Schwarber is what he is at this point - a "slugger" and not a "hitter."

2. Big start for Darvish tonight. There will be no built-in excuses for him if he does not perform.
