*****Official Cubs 2019 thread*****

I am not a genius on all things options and service time, but I believe the Cubs can just keep him in Des Moines if they choose to. I can't claim to know how the organization feels. My guess is there is a split, and that's probably to be expected. Cut him and you lose him. Keep him in Des Moines and maybe he proves he's a changed man and can be fully rehabilitated, or, he just keeps his nose clean, hits the ball hard, and some team that needs a SS makes an offer.
I can't see a great outrage in Des Moines, and a boycott being threatened if he takes the field for the I-Cubs. Am I wrong about his options status?

I have never understood how people think ending Addison Russell's career by simply dumping him is going to help his ex and his kids. The best thing for everybody involved is for Russell to learn from this, be rehabbed, become a changed man, and is able to provide for his kids by salvaging his career. I doubt he stays a Cub as a change of scenery is probably also necessary for him.

I am so torn on Russell. I believe in redemption, but, that's usually drugs or something like that. When you are a person that uses physical and emotional control/violence over people that's usually something that isn't easy to fix.
In a crass way, as I have posted before, I don't know why Russell's agent didn't proactively go to each of the women in Russell's life and buy their silence. Explain that FA money is at the end of the rainbow, and you can have some of it if you stay silent.

Carlos Zambrano was on with David Kaplan tonight, and he is making a comeback. He is playing in an independent league with a team based in Rosemont. He said he is hitting the lower 90s with his fastball, and wants to return to MLB as a reliever. As hard as it is to believe he is only 37 years old.
Who knows if he’ll make it, he was fundamentally healthy throughout his career, and many paitchers are effective into this age range.

My understanding is that he is not currently on the 40 man roster but has to be added back once his suspension is over. The cubs don’t have an open spot so someone has to be dropped. At that point he can stay in the minors as he has options left. If he is added back to the 25 man someone has to be optioned back to aaa. I guess it would have to be zagunis, almora, schwarber or a relief pitcher.

What’s to learn?

There’s nothing that ever says domestic violence is acceptable.

Dump his ass and let him ‘learn’ how to work for a living instead of the privilege of being paid handsomely for playing a game.

Terrible base running by Contreras. If that ball isn't caught, he trots home anyway. With the defender running toward the wall he absolutely has to be able to tag up and advance to third if it's caught.

He’s not in jail, his suspension will have been served, no reason to throw away an asset. Let him figure things out for a while in AAA and then bring him back up in the second half.

Cubs have the wheels back on the bus and are moving in the right direction. Playing a crappy Miami team was a big help, but a series sweep on the road early in the season is never an easy thing to do regardless of the competition. I am cautiously optimistic that they can be very close to, if not in the division lead by May 1.

Someone will simply pick him up at league minimum. He's not going to be working construction in June.

There are a few guys on the 40 man who could be cut, or who could be stashed on the 60 day DL. There may or may not be a pressing need to add a catcher, as well. If Caratini does not recover on an aggressive timetable Maddon will wear Contreras out.
As far as if a pitcher goes down, Maddon is so wedded to a 13 man pitching staff I don't see that happening. If Russell comes back to the MLB roster, it will be at the expense of Zagunis most likely.

I’ve been a Cubs fan since Leo the Lip was managing them.

Chapman was very disconcerting to me, too.

Russell would have to prove something to me to show he’s a changed man.

What did Chapman do to show you he was a changed man?
FYI I am neither pro nor anti Russell on this one, Chapman tainted my enjoyment of the WS but I am assuming due diligence was done on his background. I like to understand thought processes on things.

Huh? How could you have been a cubs fan and not aware of Chapman’s allegations? As for Russell, I have no problem with him having another shot. I don’t think him being a MLB player should prevent him from 2nd chances. He obviously will have to deal with the crowds and media, so we will see how mentally tough he is. Seems to be the theme in the NFL and people forget quick in that league

Really interesting piece on FanGraphs about the new-look Heyward (link and 1st paragraph teaser):

Jason Heyward was a very good baseball player for a very long time. From 2010-2015, his 25 WAR was one of the top 20 marks in the game and in his final two seasons before free agency, his 10 wins was 10th in all of baseball. In his one season in St. Louis, Jason Heyward was worth 5.6 WAR. In three-plus seasons for Chicago, Heyward has been worth 4.6 WAR as he approaches the midway point of his $184 million contract. To say the contract hasn’t worked out ignores that the Cubs won a World Series in his first season with the club and have won 90+ games in the two subsequent seasons. Heyward hasn’t been a good value early on, but he trended upward slightly last season, hitting at an average level and producing at a above-average level overall when factoring in baserunning and defense. This season, Heyward has been one of the better hitters in baseball in the early going thanks to an a absurd 10 walks compared to just six strikeouts as well as new secret trick: hitting the ball hard.

We have “no money” and nothing in the farm to trade. Looks like our best set-up guy (Strop) will be stuck as closer for the season.

I think the money thing was partially that and partly to see what they had with some guys getting healthy. With Morrow sit down and not looking good for a comeback this season, I actually wouldn't be surprised if the Cubs went after Kimbrell. That said, at this point, he's an injury risk and I don't see anyone signing him until June when the comp pick tie goes away.

I know this is hard to believe but Morrow shut down with more soreness in the arm.
Well, there is a guy who could go on the 60 day at this point to open up a spot on the 40 man, or, just be cut. It's April 20th and he can't throw a baseball. At the very best maybe he pitches in late June or July.
