Forget the bullpen and trade for some damn hitting. If Kris Bryant is supposed to be so damn great then why does he have only 51 RBIs two-thirds through the season?
Hendricks will need to be darn near perfect tonight.
I don't really care if this team makes the playoffs at this point. They are no where near good enough to beat the Dodgers or Yankees in a series. The only question is whether they would get swept or not.
I dunno. You got 3 starters that when they're on they can shut any team down for 8 innings. Playoff baseball is timing and matchups. A hot at the right time staff can go deep in playoffs, and there are reasons why all the "still in it" teams are looking for pitching.
The Cubs are playing 3 straight road series against 3 teams in the playoff hunt. The schedule will turn for them. I count roughly 16 games against the Reds/Pirates, I see the Mets and Mariners on it too. And of course they'll have games against the Brewers and Cards left late.
There's a long long way to go yet.
Yeah, Cubs were up 5 games in the division to start September last year and we all saw how that turned out, and I would contend the Brewers went and took the division vs. the Cubs blowing it. There is still a lot of baseball left, but taking the next two would provide some relief and confidence going forward.
Brewers went 19-7 and Cubs 16-12 from September 1st (not including game #163).
During that time the Brewers outscored their opponents 143-77; whereas the Cubs had only a 117-109 edge.
So, not only did the Cubs play a couple more games than the Brewers in September they played in a heckuva lot more close games, as well. All the Cubs had to do was win 1 more game during that stretch and who knows how things would've worked out.
Yeah, there is a long way to go yet, but for their confidence's sake it would be nice to win at least one of these next 2 in StL. They haven't won there yet this year and their last 3 regular season games are in StL, preceded by 3 games in PGH (prior to that, they host StL for 4 in Wrigley). They would be best served to have a 3-4 game lead heading into that last week, if that's even possible.I dunno. You got 3 starters that when they're on they can shut any team down for 8 innings. Yeah, their schedule at the end of last year did them no favors. I think the only off day they had down the stretch ended up becoming a make up game in WASH with a hurricane bearing down on the east coast. They had a lot of rain outs early in the season that ended up in late season make up games. You kind of just proved my point. The Cubs didn't tank, they played 4 games above .500. The Brewers played out of their minds to a clip of .730 and took the division in a 1 game playoff. Yeah, Cubs win one more and they win the division, but I wouldn't call playing 4 games over .500, and playing every...single...day, the way the schedule was set-up, as collapsing.
Who are the Cubs going to get today? I'm hoping for Castellanos. I would settle for Pence. I think Merrifield's price is too high. They absolutely need to add a bat or two, the lineup is stale. At least 1 more bullpen arm would be nice too.
Cubs won only 2 out of 6 against the Brewers in the last month, then game #163.You kind of just proved my point. The Cubs didn't tank, they played 4 games above .500. Why?
Hey, don’t forget we have the Magic Man....Descalso!!PLEASE get a true leadoff man who can play 2B and/or CF.
Why?
Is he supposed to be the lead off batter we’ve hoped for?
Leadoff, 2B/CF. Makes consistent contact, takes walks, steals bases. He checks all the boxes.
And gave up someone named Martin Maldonado.
Seems like Maldonado's chances of playing in the WS just went up.And gave up someone named Martin Maldonado.
Heard the Cubs were talking with the Diamondbacks. Don't suppose Marte is an option, do you?Cubs ESPN beat reporter Jesse Rogers says Cubs will “definitely” add another bat today.
So basically, Montgomery for Kemp. Not exactly the return I would have hoped for when trading him.
Brewers and Giants have agreement on “significant” trade.
Better not be Bumgardner.
