*****Official Cubs 2019 thread*****

That looked like two rested teams, with two good pitching staffs. Waino has been borderline great at home, and Darvish at times looked dominating.

One gopher ball, otherwise dead even game all around. Cards bullpen pitched both into and out of trouble. And I was kinda surprised Cubs used Cishek and Wick trailing - guess Joe is putting a lot of emphasis on this series.

The most boring thing about St. Louis is the way Kris Bryant hits in that ballpark. Look up the numbers - they are ugly.

What we see right now is a team with a completely top-heavy lineup, and very little depth on their roster. This is why you have an overmatched Robel Garcia hitting leadoff.

The club has no depth because their abject failure in pitching development has them paying $100M on starting pitching, plus an expensive bullpen. This took them to the #2 payroll in baseball, and they weren't able to add any good position player.

Some of us saw this coming on the horizon.

The Cubs will get swept by STL. Kris Bryant will go 0-for against Miles Mikolas. Hendricks will need to be darn near perfect tonight.

Hendricks will need to be darn near perfect tonight.

The Cards are a bad change-up hitting team. I like the Cubs chances tonight.

Mikolas is a lot like Wainwright...pretty darn good at home, bad (but not as bad as Waino) on the road.

Another 2-1 type game is quite likely.

I don't really care if this team makes the playoffs at this point. They are no where near good enough to beat the Dodgers or Yankees in a series. The only question is whether they would get swept or not.

I dunno. You got 3 starters that when they're on they can shut any team down for 8 innings. Playoff baseball is timing and matchups. A hot at the right time staff can go deep in playoffs, and there are reasons why all the "still in it" teams are looking for pitching.

The Cubs are playing 3 straight road series against 3 teams in the playoff hunt. The schedule will turn for them. I count roughly 16 games against the Reds/Pirates, I see the Mets and Mariners on it too. And of course they'll have games against the Brewers and Cards left late.

There's a long long way to go yet.

Yeah, Cubs were up 5 games in the division to start September last year and we all saw how that turned out, and I would contend the Brewers went and took the division vs. the Cubs blowing it. There is still a lot of baseball left, but taking the next two would provide some relief and confidence going forward.

This never happens to teams I cheer for. They are just too inconsistent. They are terrible on the road and they won't have home field advantage in any series even if they do make it. I just don't see it happening. I'd love to be proven wrong though.

Brewers went 19-7 and Cubs 16-12 from September 1st (not including game #163).

During that time the Brewers outscored their opponents 143-77; whereas the Cubs had only a 117-109 edge.

So, not only did the Cubs play a couple more games than the Brewers in September they played in a heckuva lot more close games, as well. All the Cubs had to do was win 1 more game during that stretch and who knows how things would've worked out.

You kind of just proved my point. The Cubs didn't tank, they played 4 games above .500. The Brewers played out of their minds to a clip of .730 and took the division in a 1 game playoff. Yeah, Cubs win one more and they win the division, but I wouldn't call playing 4 games over .500, and playing every...single...day, the way the schedule was set-up, as collapsing.

Yeah, there is a long way to go yet, but for their confidence's sake it would be nice to win at least one of these next 2 in StL. They haven't won there yet this year and their last 3 regular season games are in StL, preceded by 3 games in PGH (prior to that, they host StL for 4 in Wrigley). They would be best served to have a 3-4 game lead heading into that last week, if that's even possible.

Yeah, their schedule at the end of last year did them no favors. I think the only off day they had down the stretch ended up becoming a make up game in WASH with a hurricane bearing down on the east coast. They had a lot of rain outs early in the season that ended up in late season make up games.

Who are the Cubs going to get today? I'm hoping for Castellanos. I would settle for Pence. I think Merrifield's price is too high. They absolutely need to add a bat or two, the lineup is stale. At least 1 more bullpen arm would be nice too.

Cubs won only 2 out of 6 against the Brewers in the last month, then game #163.

Can't do anything about it now.

From a quick perusal with of Twitter, it looks like the Houston fans really liked this Kemp guy.

Cubs ESPN beat reporter Jesse Rogers says Cubs will “definitely” add another bat today.

Kemp was DFA'd by Houston. We're picking up the scraps from a real WS contender. If we're relying upon Kemp we're done. If he's just a depth piece, then okay, whatever, still not enough.

Brewers and Giants have agreement on “significant” trade.

Better not be Bumgardner.

So basically, Montgomery for Kemp. Not exactly the return I would have hoped for when trading him.

Nope, but if some of the innuendo that he wanted to start and was becoming a malcontent are true, then maybe it was just a GTFO play. Not great, but sometimes those things happen.

So far today, I've seen:

  • Maldonado for Kemp
  • Tanner Roark to the A's
  • Nat pick up Daniel Hudson from Mariners and Hunter Strickland and Roenis Elias from the Jays
  • Brewers get Pomeranz and in another deal are apparently sending Jesus Aguilar to the Rays for Jake Faria
