*****Official Cubs 2019 thread*****

Here is another good clip ... see how many fun old Cubs are in this clip. Hibbard, Boskie, Scanlan, Buechele (again :)), May, Bautista ...

Cubs utilityman Ben Zobrist will start his comeback Friday night with Class A South Bend.

He is expected to be the designated hitter for the game against West Michigan Whitecaps at Four Winds Field.

Zobrist, 38, who has been on the restricted list since May 8, hasn’t played since May 6. He and his wife, Julianna, filed for divorce in separate states in early May. Team President Theo Epstein said July 26 in Milwaukee on that Zobrist has been performing baseball activities and looked forward to returning before the Aug. 31 deadline for him to be eligible for the playoffs.

Zobrist was batting only .241 in 83 at-bats when he left the Cubs. But the veteran switch hitter delivered the game-winning hit in Game 7 of the 2016 World Series and is respected throughout the clubhouse for his leadership and batting skills.

“We’re excited he’s going to give us everything he can to try to help the team down the stretch,” Epstein said Friday. “We’re thrilled by the news, happy for him, happy for us. We understand there are still a lot of steps that must happen. We think there’s a chance he’ll come back and help our depth.

“He brings unique things to the table in the clubhouse and on the field. We hope for our sake and his he’s able to complete this process and contribute.”

Zobrist is in the final year of a four-year, $56 million contract.

Would he have to be on the 25-man ML roster before Sept 1st in order to be eligible for post season play? It seems like that rule was changed recently but I am not sure.

Brickhouse, Boudreau, and Lloyd. Ah, memories.

Here's a news story from the Wrigley 80th birthday with snippets from all 3. And, look who hit the HR for the 'Hey Hey' from Brickhouse. His kid was the QB at Texas - now at SMU - Shane Buechele.

Prior to cable and satellite TV, Vince and Lou were my only tie to the Cubs. I remember listening to late night games from the west coast as the signal would fade in and out on WGN radio. Good times! ;)

I wouldn't think so. The August 31st thing is for new additions and guys from the minors who haven't been up. I would think coming off the Reserved List would be like coming off the injury list.

Vice Lloyd I thought had a great voice, and was great with radio spots (I can hear him describing Krausening...awesome). Just a great baseball radio voice. Boudreau was "dry voiced" and was very reserved, but definitely competent as far as knowing baseball.

A very good duo.

One of my lasting memories of them was the Burt Hooten no-hitter in an April game in I believe 1972. Another one of my "Zenith Transoceanic radio" baseball memories, a cold and rainy day both at my parents' cabin and at Wrigley.

It was a Sunday I believe and for some reason I think it was opening weekend because of a strike. We were all indoors because of the weather but were stuck there later than usual because of plumbing issues opening the cabin up...so, had time to listen to the game.

Funny, what one remembers about their youth. I wasn't quite 10 years old yet.

I honestly never saw much of Brickhouse because the Cubs were only on Sundays in Cedar Rapids (KCRG I believe) and during baseball season we were usually at the cabin (therefore no TV) or driving home from it on Sunday afternoons.

You have to be on the 40 man roster. Since he is currently not on the 40 man roster he would need to be activated from the restricted list before September 1.

Good point. I forgot he wasn't on the 40-man....and that wouldn't apply to the injured list because generally guys stay on the 40-man while injured.

If you are on the 60 day IL you are not on the 40 man roster

So did Schwarber just not go to the 60-day DL in 2016? I had been thinking that if you were on the 40-man at some point in the season before 9/1, you're eligible.

It was a Sunday. Hooton did walk 7 Phillies that day, but got the no hitter. Here's a little clip.

That was before the rule changed. It used to be anyone on the 25 man roster plus anyone on the injured list was post season eligible, now it is anyone on the 40 man roster i think.

Ah, ok. Makes some sense. If Zobrist is starting rehab now, sounds like 8/31 won't be an issue.

Who had Wick, Kintzler and Ryan as 3 of the most trusted arms in the pen in August?

Why does this thread attract so many fans of other teams?
Voice of reason from people capable of being objective.

You lobbed a softball and I crushed it into the ivy.

BTW: Yankees fan here praying for a NYY/Cubs WS.:D

You are 90% a dick just for the sake of being a dick in this thread. Bagdropper is the only objective non cub fan.

You got lobbed a softball and another Yankee rolled an ankle trying to hit it and is on the DL.

Don't worry about another Yankee on the DL...they've played most of the season with a good part of the starting lineup on the injured list and still have one of the best, if not THE best, record in all of MLB.

I realize the homers here are pissed that a team with supposedly so much talent is struggling to qualify for the playoffs. But as I've tried to educate the less informed for so long... that's on Theo Einstein and Joe(I'm batting the pitcher 8th) Maddon.

Stop being a sore loser.

One more time... Thanks again for Gleyber. GS tonite to beat Red Sox.

Theo again eating money he misspent on Brach to keep Wick.
He is all in!!

Taylor Davis is their only real option with the new trade deadline. I think they just plugged him back into the 40 man roster.

I know I quibble about Maddon’s bullpen usage, but Hamels went 5 innings, and Maddon used six relievers for the final 4 innings?
Good grief.

A great couple of games against Milwaukee. Completing the sweep today would be terrific.

I am glad that Kris Bryant has today off. He has been an absolute disaster since he left that game in San Francisco. Hitting nothing but grounders and striking out. His two hits on Friday were a seeing-eye single and an infielder single.

I notice a pattern with Bryant. He'll go on a run, then an ache or pain will hit. They will clear him to play, but his performance falls off a cliff after that. Some of this is baseball, but he seems to be particularly susceptible to a minor ache throwing him off of his game.

Javy is now ahead of him in FanGraphs WAR - I am glad my eyes have not totally lied to me. If Javy could walk 4% more than he currently does, he would clearly be a better player than KB. I NEVER saw that coming.

MLB blackout rules are just stupid. Is all of Iowa blacked out? Sioux City, IA blacked out, cross the river to Dakota Dunes, SD and it's game on. Seven hour drive from Chicago but "in market". So freaking dumb.
