*****Official Cubs 2019 thread*****

Weird to see Profar with the A's. He was right at the top of a fertile Rangers system a few years ago. Then I saw him in Des Moines a few times, and now he's been cast off. Just pointing out the tenuous guarantee that being labeled a top prospect provides. Weird, crazy splits as a batter.

It was 5 years ago tonight that Javy made his ML debut. He hit a HR at Coors Field in an extra inning AB, IIRC.

I saw him and Bryant play for Iowa in a July 4th game in Oklahoma City that year, and Baez led off the game hitting a HR through the LF light tower. Quite an impressive shot. Bryant hit a HR in about the 6th inning as well, but those were the only runs scored that night by the I-Cubs as OKC rallied late to beat them.

A CSB about Bryant's HR. There was a young family sitting in front of me whom I befriended over the course of the game. When Bryant came up to bat in the 6th, I told the young boy (+/- 7 years old) sitting ahead of me that he had better watch Bryant bat as he was likely to hit a HR. Bryant had already hit about 30 HRs before being called up from AA earlier and I just had a feeling. Sure enough, Bryant hit one over the right-center field wall for his HR. The young boy turned around and looked at me as if to say, "How did you know that?" Just a lucky hunch.

Read BCB article today about the Cubs road woes. A lot of it is just bad luck and a few relievers who are no longer on the team blowing games after the 7th.

I think the Cubs will return to the mean on the road and the road woes won't continue.

There seems to be a lot more life to this team after the trade deadline.

If this team had a solid bullpen they'd lead the Central by 5+ games. Too many blown games after the 7th.

One hit tonight after 7. 3 runs in the 8th. Not good.

Might as well try the new guy.

I get Ryan pitching around Davis. Just can't give up that hit to the next batter.

By the book, Wick gets the win, but Hendricks actually deserves it.

How many wins do our starters lose over the course of the season due to bullpen failures or lack of run support?

It seems that each starter would have at least 2-3 more wins, if not more.

6-0.

Those Dodger fans in the bleachers might want to put on a helmet. Lot of balls landing out there tonight.

Last night was a lot of fun. Hendricks pitched well, there were some timely hits, and the bullpen didn't completely blow it. Javy is on his way to becoming one of the most popular Chicago athletes of my lifetime.

But...

What in the world is wrong with Kris Bryant? One of three things has to be true:

1. The Cubs medical staff can't diagnose an injury.
2. The knee is bothering Kris more than he lets on, and he's not telling the medical staff because he wants to play.
3. Kris is incapable of playing through nagging pain. There have been multiple times when Kris has hurt himself, the medical staff clears him to play, but his production takes a nosedive.

Either way, this is not a typical slump. I don't believe he has barreled a ball since his HR in San Francisco, and as a result, the Cubs have basically been batting Daniel Descalso 3rd.

At least with Descalso you know it’s an out. With KB, you have hope and then end up disappointed.

The Cubs may be better off sitting KB for a week. Even if it’s just a very minor knee injury, his batting stance can make that injury seem worse. Hard to hit with a knee injury on your lead leg, but very difficult with that low spread out stance of his.

Beginning to believe Cishek may need to sit a couple weeks. He looks "broke".

Another head scratching decision by Joe to leave an obviously struggling pitcher out there. As you said, Cishek already looks broke, then with his pitch count near 30 for the inning and struggling mightily Joe leaves him out there until he has given up two home runs. I'm done with Madden.

I seem to recall Bryant had tweaked his knee prior to the Cards series - but then during game 2 of the Cards series, him going to the left field stands to make a really nice catch. In the process though, with the low wall there, he sorta half hyper-extended leaning over as momentum carried him to the 1st row.

I remember thinking "I bet that hurt". I even remember I think it was the Cubs TV guys mentioning as he ran under the popup "remember he's got a sore knee...."

Then as he jogged back to the infield, had a bit of a hitch as he ran.

2 for 16 I believe since. For the most part, he was hitting really well up to that Friday night game in Milwaukee. 3 for his last 34 overall since.

It’s an ugly 3-34 as well. If anything, he’s been fortunate. He had two cheap hits during the Friday game against Milwaukee.

Last night, he popped up on a 3-0 count, hit a weak flare for a double play, and two other ground ball outs.

He and Boras may end up regretting not taking whatever the Cubs offered. Given that his performance completely falls off of a cliff when he gets the slightest amount of pain, I wouldn’t want any part of him for $30+M per year starting at age 30.

The I-Cubs were in Tacoma last night. I wonder if anyone from their bullpen is on a plane to O'Hare right now?

Pretty slim pickings down there. Mills threw Friday, Alzolay Saturday... Maples or Rosario probably next man up. Wish Rea was on the 40 man

They wouldn't bring up Mills or Alzolay to fill a bullpen role, so, yeah, it would most likely be Maples or Rosario. Unless, maybe Hultzen is ready. In which case someone has to go from the 40 man roster.

Theyve both been called up to fill bullpen roles in the past.
