*****Official Cubs 2023 thread*****

That's fricken depressing.

Jed and the Ricketts are going to look like shit after this off season (they don't care). I hope the fans punish the team next season for this crap.

I don't follow closely, but will the Cubs 2023 salary be lower then 2022?
I’ll add this, though. I responded to a tweet with the story and expressed an interest in context and tagged Jesse Rogers. He actually responded:

Last year I thought it was around 150. This year as of right now is 130. 25 of it being dead Heyward money through.
Based on numbers from Spotrac, which is a great source of salary data in all the major sports, the Cubs were $178.6M against the CBT (luxury tax) last year, which was 13th in baseball. They currently sit at $145.2M ($22M of which is Heyward’s dead money), which is 15th.

For context, if they sign Swanson at, say $25M AAV, that would bring them to $170M for 2023, which would be right around 9/10 depending on other signings.

Your butthurt is obvious.

How about you confine your comments to the thread title?

TIA
Butthurt about what? I'm here to discuss the Cubs upcoming season with other fans of the team. You're here to hijack the thread. I couldn't care less about you or what you think of the Cubs or how they compare to the Yankees (13 years since last WS title, right?); I'm just tired of having to look at your repeated, worthless "contributions" every time I come here. I don't understand people who get off on being annoying little sh*ts on message boards. My guess is that you're compensating for some real-life shortcomings.

I don’t care about the dollars. It’s agreeing to the years, the no trade clause, and not having an opt out that makes that a crazy deal. I guess the GM figures he’ll be long gone, or have a WS ring to tie to this contract before it goes sour.
Stupid Trea Turner

Translation...you don't like opinions that aren't in sync with yours.

Got it. You're a putz.

Cubs are the KS Royals of the NL.

So any guesses in what Rodon gets? Darby supposedly 250 according to Finn. Which I think is light.

I'm on record as being fine with the approach the Cubs are taking. Building an organization like the Rays that can identify and develop talent? Absolutely, sign me up. Plus, the Cubs have money to spend and they do spend it, as has been pointed out in this thread already. Anywhere from 10-15 in MLB in spending. The Cubs have shown they are willing to spend too. Just don't be stupid with the spending. Don't overpay in dollars or years for a guy like Swanson just because you missed out on other FAs. That's stupid. That's panic spending. That's what the Giants and Padres are doing now. Keep in mind there are more FAs that come on the market every single year and some big ones next year.

The club was trending in the right direction second half last season. The process is working. Stick to the process and don't do something rash or stupid.

Like the Boxberger signing - Segura intrigues me if we don't get Swanson
Segura is all about staying healthy. He's a talent just not durable at all. From his time as a brewer I remember him complaining a lot as well. Of course he was a rook and young.

The signings to date all pretty much have the same look...short term with the hope that they have great/good performances before the trade deadline and dump guys for AAA prospects.

That's not a recipe for short term success, but a 3-5 year plan, imo.

There’s panic spending, but there’s also watching the market and reacting to it. The last two offseasons (and really going back to 2019, just weirdness in 2020-21 with the pandemic and then the labor dispute) have shown that stars are getting big, long deals. At this point, it’s less panic spending and more adjusting to the market. The market may adjust lower at some point, but with all the sports books and new media channels and the like, I don’t think that’s likely.

So, if you want to get a star player (and while Dansby isn’t as good as the others, I think he qualifies when you pair his defense with his power), you have to pay the rates. At some point, they are going to have to sign someone to a big deal and extend a couple of their own in-house guys or nobody is ever going to take them seriously on those fronts under Jed.

Give me Swanson at SS and Turner to play 3rd. You can get Turner/Wisdom playing 3rd, Wisdom/Mervis playing 1st. Morel is the super utility player. I think that is the best you can do offensively at this point.

My guess is Turner would rather play for the Dodgers for 8 million than another team for 30 million in new money. If it comes down to that. Swanson is probably between Minnesota, Cubs, and maybe Zona.

Swanson might just end up with Dodgers to replace Turner, imo.

He's a guy that benefits from the market being about gone of shortstops.

Dodgers are in a bit of a holding pattern until arby rules on Bauer.

Jumping in late to the 2023 thread. But just thought I’d add - after 13 seasons, I’ve given up my Cubs tickets. It was tough, but too many factors (not including off season signings) came into play.
I thought about giving up mine, but I’m going to hold just a little longer.

Wrong. I don't like message board tough-guys who hijack threads, saying the same thing over and over again for the sole purpose of causing trouble. You are not interested in the Cubs; you are interested in being a pest. Everyone here has heard your tired shtick. We get it. Now go away.

And it seems all that talk about being aggressive in free agency was them blowing smoke. I’m pretty disillusioned with the Cubs as a life long fan.

We were sold on the idea of developing a farm system like the Rays during the last tank job a decade ago. Not that we would be doing it again. I can’t watch the games on my cable offerings anymore. They traded away the modern Mr. Cub in Rizzo. I honestly am starting to understand why people are Cardinals fans….you didn’t see them escorting Yadi out of town.

Shoot. The Cards brought back Pujols and had him juiced out of his mind for his swan song of a final year.

I can't go away now, you basically invited me with your proposed wager.

You really shit the bed this time.

LOL...rent free.

I think they are also holding back some in order to be involved with the potential Ohtani market after next season.
Could be the first $50 million/year man. That’s what I heard…

Rodón to the Yankees 6/$162 million.

And another catcher off the board…Narvaez to the Mets.

See, this is the difference between franchises like the NYY and the Cubs.

Even if some contracts don't work out, at least the NYY are TRYING to win.
The Cubs are just fvcking cheap asses.

The sportswriters for the Chicago Newspapers have a common
lament: The owners of the Chicago Cubs do not act like they
are in a major market in our nation. The New York teams and
the Los Angeles area teams spend their money so they are not
in a continual rebuilding mode. The Ricketts family needs to
get serious about being competitive every year.
